Reading Bodies: Aesthetics, Gender, and Family in the Eighteenth-Century Chinese Novel Guwangyan (Preposterous Words)
This dissertation focuses on the Mid-Qing novel Guwangyan (Preposterous Words, preface dated, 1730s) which is a newly discovered novel with lots of graphic sexual descriptions. Guwangyan was composed between the publication of Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase, 1617) and Honglou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber, 1791). These two masterpieces represent sexuality and desire by presenting domestic life in polygamous households set within a larger social landscape. This dissertation explores the factors that shifted the literary discourse from the pornographic description of sexuality in Jin Ping Mei, to the representation of chaste love in Honglou meng.
This dissertation can be divided into three parts. Part one: Chapter I and II introduce my main approach to interpret the text and the historical and aesthetic context of this novel. Chapter I introduces a large historical background of the late Ming and early Qing China from the aspects of the printing industry, gender politics and the literary criticism. I argue that the blurry boundaries between genres assigned by the May Fourth scholars do not fully satisfy the reading of Guwangyan. My reading, however, scrutinizes the textual body of Guwangyan to explore the material body and body politics demonstrated in the fictional world. Chapter II explains the meaning of the title of the text, the author, commentator, the commentary, and the current studies of Guwangyan.
The second part, Chapter III and IV, illustrate a close-reading of the aesthetic body of the text. Chapter III proposes that Guwangyan is a well organized novel which has a carefully designed narrative structure and internal connections among chapters. Chapter IV demonstrates the importance of characterization in the novel. I argue that through a non-polarized yin-yang dichotomy and the yin-zhen contrast, the text demonstrates the uncertainty, transformation, and development of the characters and explores their complicated inner world.
The third part, Chapter V and VI, explore two important subjects of Guwangyan, masculinity and the family. Guwangyan represents the male friendship and male same-sex relationship and how they can interact with men’s role in the public and private spheres. Chapter VI broadens the discussion of the family relationship in Guwangyan to include a much larger political landscape. I argue that the latter part of the novel establishes a significant contrast between a realistic representation of political disasters and an idealistic description of family and community unity
Lost in translation: error analysis of texts translated from Arabic into English by Saudi translators
Biographic translation is crucial in today’s globalized world to preserve histories or shed light on the lives of people who influenced their nations or the world. The literature on biographic translation and the factors hindering such translation in an English as a foreign language (EFL) setting, especially in the Saudi context, is relatively limited. In the present study, the author analyzed the errors made by Saudi EFL learners when they translated a biography from Arabic into English. The data were drawn from a short text translated by female final-year university students as part of their course evaluations. The author conducted a qualitative analysis and classified errors according to Pospescu’s taxonomy. The results showed that the students committed all the three error types: linguistic, comprehensive, and translation. Within these three types, the students made diverse errors, ranging from misusing tenses to misspelling words. Consequently, their overall translations were unsatisfactory. This finding is helpful for both learners and educators, as the identified translation errors can be used as teaching aids in translation classes. The findings put emphasis on the importance of practice and prompt feedback as essential aids educators can use to support their students during their translation learning
Automatic ranking of information retrieval systems
Typical information retrieval system evaluation requires expensive manually-collected relevance judgments of documents, which are used to rank retrieval systems. Due to the high cost associated with collecting relevance judgments and the ever-growing scale of data to be searched in practice, ranking of retrieval systems using manual judgments is becoming less feasible. Methods to automatically rank systems in absence of judgments have been proposed to tackle this challenge. However, current techniques are still far from reaching the ranking achieved using manual judgments. I propose to advance research on automatic system ranking using supervised and unsupervised techniques. 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).This work was made possible by NPRP grant# NPRP 7-1313-1-245 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). Adapting pharmacy education to the needs of society : a research journey to prepare collaborative, practice-ready pharmacists
Pharmaceutical care (PC) is a practice philosophy that embraces all the activities that pharmacists perform to optimise patients’ medications use. The author explored PC practice in Kuwait and investigated areas of developments in pharmacy education to support its provision. The thirteen publications presented in this thesis are organised into three themes. The first theme focussed on PC practice whereby the attitudes of pharmacy students and hospital pharmacists towards PC and views on the barriers to its implementation were explored using survey-based studies. The findings indicated that attitudes towards PC were positive but PC practice was limited and challenged by several professional, organisational and
technical barriers including lack of teamwork among healthcare professionals. The role of pharmacists in parenteral nutrition therapy was investigated using qualitative interviews to explore the extent of PC practice implementation at hospitals. This further revealed lack of collaborative practice and the limited clinical role of pharmacists in this
specialised area. The resulting publications highlighted the needed educational and organisational reforms to support PC practice in Kuwait.
Therefore, the second and third themes explored instructional techniques and educational models that are applied in other countries to prepare pharmacy students for PC practice and the feasibility of their implementation in Kuwait. The thesis describes the author’s published descriptive studies and literature reviews on the use of active learning methods and competency-based pharmacy education to equip
pharmacy students with the necessary professional competencies. It further describes simulation-based education and interprofessional education (IPE) for integrating collaborative practice to support PC provision. Survey-based research was used to assess the attitudes of health faculty members and students in Kuwait University towards IPE. In general, there were positive attitudes towards these educational innovations and recommendations were provided for their future implementation including the need for
administrative support and good investment in training of faculty members. The publications included in this thesis were the first to address the topics in question in Kuwait and the author became recognised as an expert in these fields. Pharmacy education in Kuwait has been evolving by adopting the Doctor of Pharmacy programme and developing IPE curriculum. The thesis provides recommendations for imbedding
educational strategies in the pharmacy curriculum to prepare pharmacy graduates to become collaborative, practice-ready PC practitioners capable of providing the PC services that the society needs and deserves
Design and operation of RDMA based routing architecture
Wichita State University, College of Engineering, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Science EngineeringIncludes bibliographic references (leaves 86-89)Internet, a connection of networks has unified the world with no boundaries and
limitations. It fulfilled the dream of being virtually present in any part of the world within no time. Over the years internet spanned into every corner of the world and a tremendous growth in the use of internet had been noticed. Internet, with its numerous advantages and support of wide variety of applications has leaded the consumer demand for more bandwidth and high availability to meet his requirements. Addressing these factors great development has taken place in recent years in the field of network technologies. A new era of Gigabit and Terabit Ethernet technologies signify the developments that address the growing demands. With the development in Ethernet technologies the demand for new router architectures that could process the data at gigabit rates also has increased. Many different router architectures have been proposed and implemented to meet these requirements. In this thesis, different router architectures have been studied and explained in detail. Many factors that affect the performance of the router have been reviewed and solutions to overcome the limitations have been addressed in detail. Addressing the solutions for limitations seen in legacy router architectures, the author presents the design, operation of a proposed new routing architecture [16]. The proposed architecture introduces the operation of RDMA into router architecture to minimize the processing and forwarding delay, which improves the performance of routers. The operation of an RDMA enabled router and the operation between two RDMA enabled routers have been clearly explained. The author also presents the mathematical models for evaluating the delay within a router and between two routers, processor utilization and memory utilization for both the legacy and RDMA enabled router architectures. In order to understand the router operation in detail and to enable future researchers to work on router architecture, a simulator with router operation has been built for both the router architectures. The results show that the proposed architectural operation improves the performance of routers even in heavy traffic networks
Metafiction in Contemporary Chinese Literature
ix, 106 p.This thesis focuses on the metafictional elements in selected works of the contemporary Chinese authors Gao Xingjian, Huang Jinshu, and Wang Xiaobo. I define metafiction as both a formal feature inherent in the text and the result of an approach towards that text. I argue that metafiction confronts us with the (postmodern) issues of 1) the ontological status of the text, 2) the figure of the author and reader, and 3) the (ambiguous) relationship between fiction and reality. Simultaneously, it accepts and celebrates this self-conscious and ambiguous character, encouraging readers to do the same. By combining elements from the indigenous literary tradition and international literary movements, contemporary Chinese metafiction is a valuable contribution to the study of metafiction. Ultimately, it shows what it means to write and read in a Chinese as well as in a global context.Committee in charge: Prof. Alison Groppe, Chairperson;

These gliadin digestion-resistant domains (33-mer and 26-mer) elicit an immune response in genetically predisposed individuals causing celiac disease. Oral microbial proteases exhibit cleavage activity towards the frequently tripeptide is also abundant in dietary gluten including glutenins and gliadins. Gluten contains domains that are resistant to digestion by human digestive enzymes. These gliadin digestion-resistant domains (33-mer and 26-mer) elicit an immune response in genetically predisposed individuals causing celiac disease. Based on the observed similarity in amino acid sequence between basic protein-rich proteins and gluten, we hypothesized that oral microbial proteases involved in cleaving salivary basic proline-rich proteins may also degrade gluten. The goal of this study was to isolate and characterize gluten degrading microorganisms from the oral cavity, to establish overall proteolytic cleavage site specificities and to make efforts towards the isolation of the gluten-degrading enzymes.
Materials and methods: Aliquots of whole saliva and supragingival plaque suspensions were plated on gluten agar and bacteria were sub-cultured on Brucella agar plates to purity. Suspensions of selected pure bacterial
strains were tested for protease activities towards mixed gliadins as well as gliadin-derived 33-mer and 26-mer peptides. Enzymatic cleavage site specificities were investigated using five synthetic gliadin tripeptide analogs derivatized with paranitroanilide. pH activity and inhibitor profiIes were determined by monitoring hydrolysis of one of the substrates (Z-YPQ-pNA). Bacteria showing enzymatic cleavage activity of interest were speciated by 16S rDNA analysis. Gliadin-degrading enzyme(s) produced buy one of the identified bacteria, R. mucilaginosa were partially purified by DEAE Ion-exchange chromatography followed by hydrophobic interaction chromatography and Mono Q Ion-exchange chromatography.
Results: Dental plaque microorganisms were capable of cleaving mixed gliadins as well as 33-mer and 26-mer peptides, which were resistant to degradation by the mammalian gastrointestinal enzymes trypsin, chymotrypsin and pepsin. Among the tripeptide substrates Z-YPQ-pNA was most efficiently cleaved by dental plaque bacteria. Longer incubations also led to hydrolysis of Z-QQP-pNA, Z-PPF-pNA and Z-PFP-pNA, Gliadin-degrading proteases in dental plaque were active over a wide pH range (3-10). Using a selective agar approach oral gluten degrading bacteria was isolated. Aerobic strains identified were Rothia mucillaginosa and Rohia ot 188; anaerobic strains found were Bifidobacterium Bifidobacerium dentium Gliadin zymography of isolated oral microbial strains revealed prominent gliadin-degrading protease activities in Rothia species. The approximate molecular weight of the gliadin-degrading enzyme was 75kD. Rothia bacteria cleaved Z-YPQ-pNA and Z-LPY-pNA but not Z-QQP-pNA, Z-PPF-pNA and Z-PFP-pNA. The gliadin- degrading enzyme(s) of R. aeria were tentatively classified as a serine-protease(s) based on strong inhibition by PMFS and AEBSF. Its enzymes were not active at neutral to basic pH values. Partial isolation of the gliadin degrading enzyme(S) was achieved separating the enzymes with cleavage specificities towards Z-YPQ-pNA or Z- LPY pNA.
ConcIusion: This is the first reported evidence for gluten-degrading microorganisms to be part of the natural oral microflora. 1t is very well possible that oral microorganisms play an unappreciated role in the digestion of gluten and might be implicated in gluten-related enteropathies such as celiac disease. Furthermore, therapeutic applications of the enzymes identified can be envisioned
