Sun Position Identification in Sky Images for Nowcasting Application

    Get PDF
Very-short-term photovoltaic power forecast, namely nowcasting, is gaining increasing attention to face grid stability issues and to optimize microgrid energy management systems in the presence of large penetration of renewable energy sources. In order to identify local phenomena as sharp ramps in photovoltaic production, whole sky images can be used effectively. The first step in the implementation of new and effective nowcasting algorithms is the identification of Sun positions. In this paper, three different techniques (solar angle-based, image processing-based, and neural network-based techniques) are proposed, described, and compared. These techniques are tested on real images obtained with a camera installed at SolarTechLab at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy. Finally, the three techniques are compared by introducing some performance parameters aiming to evaluate of their reliability, accuracy, and computational effort. The neural network-based technique obtains the best performance: in fact, this method is able to identify accurately the Sun position and to estimate it when the Sun is covered by clouds

A fuzzy approach to image filtering in diving video processing

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to compare two different types of filter for the diving video processing. The two filters are a boolean filter and a fuzzy filter. These filters are applied for improving the diving video analysis aimed to introduce quantitative tools and diving performance measurement and therefore to improve training. The aim of the filter is to identify the athlete in the video to further process the data in order to obtain information as the position of the barycentre and the rotational inertia. The application of the fuzzy logic to the filter is aimed to reduce the errors in identify the athlete when the lightening changes and consequently in the traditional filter it can be excluded

How Giulia Niccolai has changed Italian contemporary literature

I have been studying Italian contemporary author Giulia Niccolai for 2 semesters with Dr. Santini, and I am currently writing my final paper for senior seminar on her life, work, and her role not only in Italian literature, but in feminism. Also, I discuss how she is one of the most underrated authors in Italy, and why she deserves more recognition, based on her work in photography, literature, and art. The following is a short introduction and the thesis from my paper: Italian is one of the languages that gave birth to some of the most significant and important authors, especially in contemporary literature and the Renaissance. They influenced the history of literature not only during the Renaissance, where some of the best writers of all time, such as Petrarch, Dante and Boccaccio became figures, but in the 20th century, when authors such as Umberto Eco and Giulai Niccolai were framed in Italian literary history .Although Eco is more known and has received more credit, many experts in contemporary literature argue that Niccolai has had a greater impact, especially from a feminist point of view. Although Niccolai was one of the most underrated authors of her time, due to her vast areas of expertise and experience in poetry, translation and photography, she was one of the most important authors of contemporary Italian literature. There was not another Italian author so innovative in his works like her

An Approach to Physical Performance Analysis for Judo

    Get PDF
Sport performance analysis is a technique that is becoming every year more important for athletes of every level. Many techniques have been developed to measure and analyse efficiently the performance of athletes in some sports, but in combat sports these techniques found in many times their limits, due to the high interaction between the two opponents during the competition. In this paper the problem will be framed. Moreover the physical performance measurement problem will be analysed and three different techniques to manage it will be presented. All the techniques have been used to analyse the performance of 22 high level Judo athletes

PV plant digital mapping for modules' defects detection by unmanned aerial vehicles

    No full text
Nowadays plant monitoring and control of renewable energy sources can take advantage of the use of unmanned aerial technologies. This manuscript aims to develop an image post-processing tool for remote aerial images able to help operation and maintenance operators in photovoltaic (PV) defects detection using light unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In particular, PV systems deployed in the field in the last ten years show often critical behaviour with a range of failures able to compromise the performance and energy yield of the power plants, thus they can greatly benefit of such novel technologies and tools. The described procedures are here tested on real plant data, with different kind of sensors, in order to find out potential advantages in fast fault detection tasks, using an automatic system for PV plants' mapping. The results of this research will be reported in order to provide an understanding of potential impact of image processing techniques based on UAV in the renewable energy sector

Two-dimensional Heliocentric Dynamics Approximation of an Electric Sail with Fixed Attitude

    Get PDF
This work analyzes an approximate solution of the equations of motion for a spacecraft propelled by an Electric Solar Wind Sail with a fixed attitude. The peculiarity of such a propulsion system is that its thrust scales as the inverse heliocentric distance. This represents a substantial difference from a classical solar sail, whose propelling force is known to be proportional to inverse square distance from the Sun. Assuming a heliocentric, two-dimensional mission scenario, the polar form of the spacecraft trajectory equation is obtained for a closed parking orbit of given characteristics by means of an asymptotic expansion procedure. The proposed approach significantly improves the existing results as presented in the literature. A suitable choice of propulsion system parameters and parking orbit characteristics provides interesting similarities with recent solutions obtained for a solar sail-based spacecraft in a heliocentric, two-dimensional, mission scenario
