Environmental determinant of rural households’ vulnerability to water scarcity in semi-arid Nigeria / Mohammed Baba-Adamu and Ibrahim Ahmed Jajere

    No full text
Though water resource is an important natural endowment for the attainment of improved living conditions and sustainable development, man’s consumptive demand for it continued to fall short of the supplies. This is especially in the rural communities of the semi-arid region of Nigeria, whose most water sources are unimproved and the supplies from which fall below the demand, resulting in water scarcity. The study assessed the environmental perspective of the rural households’ susceptibility to water scarcity in Nigeria. The study employed multistage sampling, the mixedmethod approach of data sourcing, and the data were analyzed with the basic descriptive and inferential statistical tools. The study findings show the continued practice of extended family system, characterized with low literacy rate and weak income levels, use of shared latrines, as well as defecation in the bushes and open spaces. It also demonstrated nine-in-ten households are vulnerable to the complex conditions of water scarcity, especially those in Kerri-Kerri Formation and the Fika Shale, as the Pearson correlation of the conditions revealed. The linear regression model of the correlated variables statistically proved to have accounted for more than 60% of the water crisis. However, the households’ adaptation strategies to water scarcity were traditional and highly ineffective to the problem of water scarcity conditions of the area. This denotes that the environmental variability influences both water availability and vulnerability to scarcity. Therefore, the study recommends the mainstreaming of the physical environmental conditions into the rural water policy, in addition to upgrading and maintenance of the available water facilities

Al-Mubadarat Al-Riyfia: an Islamic finance product for the underserved segment and the third sector of the economy / Adamu Ahmed Wudil and Rislanudeen Muhammad

    No full text
This paper presents al-Mubadarat al-Riyfia, an innovative Islamic financing product designed to serve the marginalised segment and the third sector of the economy. This paper aims to address the disparity in Islamic finance by emphasising inclusiveness and collective economic well-being. Al-Mubadarat al-Riyfia adopts a group-based approach and focuses primarily on the real business sector, aligning with the principles of value-based intermediation (VBI) in Islamic financing. The primary objective is to provide sustainable financial services to households at low income levels, serving financial needs that often fall within the range of approximately RM500 to RM1000 (approximately US$125-250). The initiative seeks to reach an estimated 40 million households worldwide. This initiative not only addresses the pressing issue of financial inclusion but also contributes significantly to the evolution of Islamic finance. It represents a pioneering effort to integrate underserved populations into the economic mainstream while upholding Islamic finance principles. The study's unique contribution lies in its potential to reshape the landscape of Islamic finance, foster shared prosperity, and provide a model for sustainable development

Sensitivity Between Economic Growth and Gas Consumption in Nigeria

    No full text
This paper build on the existing research (Adamu, A. and Darma M. (2016)) to further analyse the dynamic relationship between gas consumption and economic growth in the Nigeria. This helps to discover if sudden increase in the gas consumption can positively affect economic growth immediately. After administering VAR model, impulse response function and variance decomposition economic techniques were used to analyse the sensitivity between economic growth and gas consumption in the country. The research found that change in economic growth in the country cannot be explained by gas consumption in the period of shock, but change in gas consumption in the period of shock can be explained largely by changes in its own self and then by changes in economic growth. However, the change in gas consumption responded negatively to shock in the change in economic growth and vice versa in the period of the shock, but in subsequent period, change in gas consumption responded positively to change in economic growth. We concluded that among other variables, change in gas consumption has more influence to the movements of the economic growth, which further discovered the unique relationship between the gas consumption and real economic growth in the country in the event of shocks. Gas consumption is highly and positively responsive to its own innovation, which means direct investment in the sector can result to significant improvement in the gas consumption. The development of domestic gas consumption cannot significantly come as a result of shocks or intervention in the other sectors, it has to be a deliberate actions and interventions to enhance the gas development. Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning Using Polynomial Transformations for Structured Prediction

    No full text
Many learning problems in computer vision can be posed as structured prediction problems, where the input and output instances are structured objects such as trees, graphs or strings rather than, single labels {+1, −1} or scalars. Kernel methods such as Structured Support Vector Machines , Twin Gaussian Processes (TGP), Structured Gaussian Processes, and vector-valued Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), offer powerful ways to perform learning and inference over these domains. Positive definite kernel functions allow us to quantitatively capture similarity between a pair of instances over these arbitrary domains. A poor choice of the kernel function, which decides the RKHS feature space, often results in poor performance. Automatic kernel selection methods have been developed, but have focused only on kernels on the input domain (i.e.’one-way’). In this work, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm for learning kernel functions simultaneously, on both input and output domains. We introduce the idea of learning polynomial kernel transformations, and call this method Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning (STKL). STKL can learn arbitrary, but continuous kernel functions, including ’one-way’ kernel learning as a special case. We formulate this problem for learning covariances kernels of Twin Gaussian Processes. Our experimental evaluation using learned kernels on synthetic and several real-world datasets demonstrate consistent improvement in performance of TGP’s.Peer reviewe
