Critical Explorations of Modern African Literature in Selected Texts
The articles herein reflect not only contemporary scholars’ engagement with aspects of African literature, but also the main themes that African authors gravitate towards in their attempts to diagnose the malaise that ails Africa and attempt a lasting solution. At one point in history Chinua Achebe had laid a solid finger on the problem of leadership, and exempted everything else. Over the years, failure of leadership is still no doubt the leading problem, but others subtler and more insidious have cropped up: corruption, ethnicity, neo-colonialism, environmental degradation, social media and uneven advancements in technology, civil wars, unplanned urbanity, gender bias, mental health, consensual and forced migrations, LGBTQ+ issues and above all, the people of Africa. This last category, of course, arising from the assumption that a people get strictly the leadership they deserve, and doubles back to the first and foremost African problem – her political leadership. The articles in this issue, in essence, seem to agree that until we change the kind of political leaders we choose – we are still deeply imbedded in the long night of knives
Contesting Homosexuality: Unreliable Narration in Tendai Huchu’s "The Hairdresser of Harare"
Tendai Huchu’s The Hairdresser of Harare is arguably a queer text. It presents the homosexual orientation of one of its male characters, Dumisani. By positioning this character in-between, the normal and abnormal spaces, this essay attends to the politics that coalesce around homosexuality and demonstrates how Huchu’s novel gestures towards queerness, but narrative techniques undermine these overtures. Adopting deconstruction as a theoretical framework, the essay gets down to the nitty-gritty of what constitutes queer sexuality and measures this with the liminal presentation of Dumi as a queer character to show how he falls short of the queerness that he is deemed to harbour. The paper challenges prevailing interpretations of queerness in the novel by examining the politics of representation through the lens of unreliability and logo-centrism. By interrogating the reliability of the narrator and the centrality of language in shaping perceptions, the essay reveals the complexities of interpreting identity and sexuality in literature
Influence of Market Development Strategies on Sustainable Conservation of Heritage Sites in Nyeri County, Kenya
In the recent years, heritage sites have faced numerous challenges, including cultural commercialization, organic dilapidation, development pressure, inadequate marketing and improper use and maintenance. Kenya has begun to embrace sustainable heritage tourism development goals that are aligned with Kenya\u27s Vision 2030. This paper examines the influence of market development strategies on the sustainable conservation of selected heritage sites in Nyeri County. Ansoff\u27s marketing and sustainable development theories underpinned the study’s theoretical foundation. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was adopted. The target population included local community, tourists, and key informants from the County government of Nyeri, the National Museums of Kenya, and site supervisors. The sample size was 762 respondents, consisting of 384 locals, 367 tourists, and 11 key informants. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. Quantitative data analyzed using the SPSS through descriptive and inferential analysis. Qualitative data followed a content analysis, with responses grouped as themes. The response rate for questionnaires was 66.2%, while that of interviews was 100%. The results of correlation analysis revealed that market development strategies (r=0.551, p=0.000) statistically exhibited a positive significant relationship with the sustainable conservation of heritage sites in Nyeri County. The study concluded market development strategies a catalyst for attaining sustainable conservation initiatives by promoting tourism activities using aggressive marketing techniques, utilize market segmentation to increase customer bases, and having a management department that orchestrates viable marketing ideas resulting to increased market bases, translating into sustainable initiatives of heritage sites to meet the demand and uphold sustainability. The study recommends a market development strategy to be anchored on the County\u27s economic policies and plans to ensure that heritage sites are allocated the required funds to develop their marketing goals, with a structured management team for accountability on matters of heritage sites and active involvement of the locals
Revitalizing Mother Languages: Culture, Globalization and Technology
Globalization has paved the way for trade, culture sharing, research, development, communication, innovation, and the spread of technology. But while these and other benefits of globalization are often analyzed, little attention is paid to its impact on mother languages. The UN estimates that more than 50 percent of the languages spoken across the globe will disappear by 2100. Africa, in particular, is in danger of losing 250 languages out of the 600 currently in decline on the continent. Globalization is responsible for much of this language endangerment as it creates economic, political, and social conditions that promote the dominance of Western languages like English and French over local languages. This paper investigates the nature and extent of globalization’s impact on mother languages in Africa and forwards conditions that must be met to revive and preserve these languages. Using Memmi\u27s Theory of Colonization, Freire\u27s Theory of Pedagogy of the Oppressed, and Fisherman\u27s Model for Language Revival, I argue that language endangerment is a product of previous colonizing policies that disenfranchised indigenous languages and cultures and that continues today as globalization. I posit that this endangerment poses a direct threat to the national and cultural identities of indigenous peoples. I ask and attempt tp answer three key questions: How does globalization facilitate language loss in Africa? How does this loss impact the social, cultural, and political structures of African peoples? And what steps can the continent take to revive its mother languages? In analyzing past works, I acknowledge that many language revitalization campaigns rely on technology to preserve and disseminate ‘sleeping’ languages. I, however, advance that a multifaceted approach involving new educational policies, decolonization, locally-driven research, and collaborative learning could produce better results. I therefore recommend that technology-focused revitalization efforts be combined with community engagement and policy changes to revitalize the languages, identities, and cultures of African people more effectively
Strategies of Signification and Subversion in Post-Colonial Writing: A Reading of Derek Walcott’s "Pantomime"
This article delves into the complex criticality of signifying strategies utilized by Derek Walcott in his play Pantomime, analysing how these techniques enrich the text’s narrative and thematic resonance. Through an in-depth scrutiny of the play, the article investigates Walcott\u27s masterful use of intertextuality and the ways it creates a multi-layered narrative that transcends the immediate context of the play and engages with larger themes of identity, colonialism, and cultural hybridity. Drawing on key concepts from postcolonial theory and Semiotics, the article explores how Walcott infuses the play with nuanced meaning that challenges traditional power structures and reflects the complexities of postcolonial identity. Central to this analysis is the titular parrot, a potent symbol of Caribbean identity and voice, which serves as a poignant reminder of the colonial legacy of cultural mimicry and erasure. Through this critical lens, the article illuminates Walcott’s strategic use of signification and challenges readers to reconsider colonial narratives that reflect on the dynamic interplay between cultural heritage and the pursuit of self-determination
