The Grandmother Language: Writing Community Process in Jeannette Armstrong’s Whispering in Shadows
In Whispering in Shadows, Jeannette Armstrong deftly employs non-standard English phraseology to convey Okanagan perceptions of the world. The author enacts a decolonizing process in her writing, exploring ways to evoke a proximate (but ultimately limited) experience of an Okanagan orality and world view in English. Penny Jackson’s sensibilities, which synthesize perceptions of sound, colour, and linguistic images as organically interrelated, are the primary manifestation of this process. The author's symbiosis of land, language, and community produces a creative well-spring, which encourages community-centered creative practices in keeping with the metaphoric implications of En’owkin, an Okanagan conception rooted in the belief that nurturing voluntary cooperation is essential for everyday living
The only truly alien planet is earth: J. G. Ballard, dalla fantascienza al mainstream tra romanticismo e surrealismo
As an author J. G. Ballard used to deal with different genres and topics, producing several short stories and a number of novels. Yet he has always been true to himself. He started as a science fiction writer, which in a sense he was until the end. With some occasional romantic references, over the years Ballard’s fiction ranged from a personal surrealistic mood to novelized autobiography. He also had a keen interest in psychopathology and society, while being somehow haunted by his experience as a civilian prisoner of war in his early teenage years. This study shows how, like a chameleon, he often appeared under different guises, but always stayed undisputedly ‘Ballardian’
Jeannette walls from: home on the range to homeless
The purpose of this work is to give people an idea about how Jeannette Wall`s best works have contributed to humanity. The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses have valuable messages for us. It is important to understand that these works can enrich our understanding of humanity and increase our knowledge because they portray human experiences with respect to love, family, and ambition, among other themes.
The First Chapter of this thesis deals with Jeannette Walls’s personal growth, her family, and her career. Her life and her works are extremely interesting and important subjects to be studied, analyzed, and admired.
The Second Chapter is a theoretical framework concerning the Novel and different types of biography. The selected works considered here are from different categories; one of them is a novel and the other one is a memoir. A memoir is the story of someone's life at a specific time. On the other hand, a memoir isn't exactly an autobiography, because an autobiography is about the author's life. A memoir, in contrast, is about a certain point in the author`s life The Third Chapter presents an analysis of Jeannette Walls´ most important works, The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses. This chapter covers the most important characters of the works, the time place and concrete situations of the environment in which the characters spin out their destinies. A brief chronology of the events of each book will be given.
Finally, the last chapter gives us a deeper idea about the importance of these two works for English literature; that is, to understand valuable messages that can enrich our understanding of humanity and increase our knowledge of the world.Licenciada en Ciencias de la Educación en Lengua y Literatura InglesaCuenc
"Jeannette Armstrong and her Feminism of Decolonisation"
Jeannette Armstrong, an Okanagan from Canada, is both a teacher and a
writer. Her novel, Slash, has been much criticised by feminists, because
of its male protagonist. By assuming a male perspective in her novel, this
Native Canadian did not intend to legitimise and reinforce patriarchal
power; rather, she argues that her choice was inextricably linked to a
time when machismo and the European notion of leadership ruled the
day. She further advances a philosophical reason: she wanted Native
peoples to reconcile themselves with their traditional worldview, one
which regarded masculinity and femininity not as opposites, but as
synergistic; their relationship should be one of balance, reciprocity,
complementarity and responsibility. Taking Slash into consideration,
then, I intend to prove, together with the Okanagan author that, despite
criticism, her novel is feminist and empowering, though not in a
conventional sense: a different kind of feminism is here at stake—a
feminism of decolonisation
Whole Genome Sequencing and a New Bioinformatics Platform Allow for Rapid Gene Identification in D. melanogaster EMS Screens
Co-author Jeannette Osterloh is a doctoral student in the Neuroscience program in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at UMass Medical School. Forward genetic screens in Drosophila melanogaster using ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis are a powerful approach for identifying genes that modulate specific biological processes in an in vivo setting. The mapping of genes that contain randomly-induced point mutations has become more efficient in Drosophila thanks to the maturation and availability of many types of genetic tools. However, classic approaches to gene mapping are relatively slow and ultimately require extensive Sanger sequencing of candidate chromosomal loci. With the advent of new high-throughput sequencing techniques, it is increasingly efficient to directly re-sequence the whole genome of model organisms. This approach, in combination with traditional chromosomal mapping, has the potential to greatly simplify and accelerate mutation identification in mutants generated in EMS screens. Here we show that next-generation sequencing (NGS) is an accurate and efficient tool for high-throughput sequencing and mutation discovery in Drosophila melanogaster. As a test case, mutant strains of Drosophila that exhibited long-term survival of severed peripheral axons were identified in a forward EMS mutagenesis. All mutants were recessive and fell into a single lethal complementation group, which suggested that a single gene was responsible for the protective axon degenerative phenotype. Whole genome sequencing of these genomes identified the underlying gene ect4. To improve the process of genome wide mutation identification, we developed Genomes Management Application (GEM.app, https://genomics.med.miami.edu), a graphical online user interface to a custom query framework. Using a custom GEM.app query, we were able to identify that each mutant carried a unique non-sense mutation in the gene ect4 (dSarm), which was recently shown by Osterloh et al. to be essential for the activation of axonal degeneration. Our results demonstrate the current advantages and limitations of NGS in Drosophila and we introduce GEM.app as a simple yet powerful genomics analysis tool for the Drosophila community. At a current cost of < $1,000 per genome, NGS should thus become a standard gene discovery tool in EMS induced genetic forward screens.Neuroscienc

Andre Gide and the Negro, 1940
Because it is generally known that Andre Gide is one of France's most influential contemporary writers, there is no need to justify a study based on his works. Desirous of obtaining the opinion of an influential white author concerning Negroid people and learning his activities in their behalf, the writer of this thesis undertook the study, Andre Gide end the Negro. The value of such a study to the American Negro lies primarily in (1) a better acquaintance with and appreciation for one whose interest in darker people has resulted in a tangible contribution; (2) a knowledge of the condition of a people, who, though distant in territory, are kindred in race, and (3) a challenge for scholastic accomplishment. The method of procedure was a careful analysis of Voyage au Congo and Retour du Tchad supplemented by collateral readings. To secure information concerning Mr. Gide's official investigation in 1938 of the natives' educational facilities in Senegal, a letter was sent him. Despite the anxiety which must be his because of the present war in which his country is involved, the eminent author found time to respond. His reply is quoted on page thirty-one of this study. Grateful acknowledgment is hereby given both Mr. Gide for his amicable letter and Professor Cook, who made such a contact possible. The various factors for the evolution of Gide's interest in Negroid people are shown in Chapter I. Chapter II contains a discussion of the colonial abuses existing in French Equatorial Africa exposed by Gide and his efforts to eradicate these. Through Chapter III one learns the author's personal impression of the morale and intelligence of Negroid people. In Chapter IV an interpretation of Gide's literary art in Voyage au Gang and Retour du Tchad is presented. The results are summarized in the conclusion
Pressure ulcers are ischemic skin lesions considered an adverse event related to healthcare. These

problem is crucial for their prevention. To evaluate the level of knowledge of Rotating Nursing
Internship students on the management and care of pressure ulcers in Quito, Ecuador, during the
period May 2024–April 2025. An observational, quantitative study with a cross- sectional, descriptive
epidemiological design. An adaptation of the Renobato-Acosta Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test
(ReAc-PUKT) questionnaire was applied, obtaining a Cronbach's alpha of 0.651. Results: A total of
163 rotating nursing interns participated; of this total, 82.2% were women; 95% CI: 76–87%.
Furthermore, 82.8% (95% CI: 76–88%) acquired knowledge about pressure ulcers during their
academic training. Finally, it was determined that 65.6% (95% CI: 58–72%) of respondents had
insufficient knowledge. There is an inadequate level of knowledge about pressure ulcers, primarily
regarding general aspects and prevention; however, most patients are aware of treatment. Since these
injuries are considered an indicator of quality of care, it is necessary to implement ongoing theoretical
and practical training programs and review curricula to strengthen knowledge and, consequently,
improve patient safety and quality of care.PregradoEnfermero(a
Computational thinking: the developing definition
Since Jeanette Wing’s use of the term computational thinking in 2006, various discussions have arisen seeking a robust definition of the phrase. With little consensus having been found in the intervening years, there are even suggestions that a definition is not important. Perhaps focus should be on how computational thinking is taught and how its acquisition might be observed. However, in order to facilitate consistent curriculum design and appropriate assessment, it is argued that a definition should still be soughtIn order to contribute to the discussions surrounding a definition of computational thinking, this review of literature spans the years since 2006. The most frequently occurring terms, descriptions, and meanings are identified. Consideration is given to the motivation for inclusion or exclusion of a term by each individual author. Where possible, if a description has been given, an associated term is supplied.Criteria are developed for the objectives of a computational thinking definition, in accordance with the needs identified in the literature. Using the criteria as a guide and the collected terms as the vocabulary, a definition of computational thinking is proposed which encompasses the thought processes of abstraction, decomposition, algorithmic design, evaluation, and generalization. <br/
