Koncepcje responsywności jako odpowiedź na postulaty „uwrażliwienia” demokracji przedstawicielskiej

The author discusses two concepts of responsiveness in his paper: the concept of active society, developed by Amitai Etzioni, and the concept of responsive public administration by Mateusz Stêpieñ. The author finds both concepts potentially inspiring in the context of theoretical proposals to overcome some dysfunctions of representative democracy. The author of the paper also proposes to include the concepts of responsiveness in the framework of the so-called transformation trend of theories of democracy, which perceives politics as the transformation of individual preferences through rational discussion. The author observes a certain convergence between the concepts of responsiveness and the main assumptions of deliberative democracy (falling into the above transformation paradigm). Both concepts attempt at finding a ‘golden mean’ between liberal and republican visions of state community, while significantly ‘supplementing’ liberal democracy concepts, especially those where politics is reduced to a process of an auction of interests. Etzioni’s concept is more philosophically oriented and can serve as a theoretical foundation for more general considerations on the functioning of a democratic system and the relations between authorities and citizens. A more practically oriented concept of responsive administration can inspire the analyses of a desired model of self-government administration, whose role in the context of relations with the citizens of local communities is sometimes equal to that of local authorities. The author discusses two concepts of responsiveness in his paper: the concept of active society, developed by Amitai Etzioni, and the concept of responsive public administration by Mateusz Stêpieñ. Classic (partly) acquired. Analytic category of sick role by Talcott Parsons and its status in contemporary sociology of medicine

    No full text
In his article the author presents briefly a part of theoretical output of classic sociologist Talcott Parsons, which is his pioneer contribution to sociology of medicine development. Author of article concentrates his attention on two related issues, which are the reference to various analysis taken from different theoretical perspectives, till the present day: Parsons’ conception of sick role and his author’s model of patient-physician relationship, flowing from, characteristic of him, functionalist paradigm. The presentation also deals with critical opinions expressed towards mentioned conceptions and puts a question about their usefulness in contemporary sociology of medicine. According to author of article, issues related to social contexts of medicine need to be recognized as the clearest expounded in all Parsons’ theoretical output, what makes it so popular beyond the same sociology.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. SOCIAL DIALOGUE IN POLAND - INSTITUTIONALISATION AND PRACTICE

    No full text
The paper focuses on social and civic dialogue as an appropriate institutional form of solving social matters and working out compromising solutions between so called social partners. The author points out to the fact that social and civic dialogue in Poland - because of historical conditioning and undeveloped political culture - is not really working and is not an efficient ‘tool’ of democracy. Hence he postulates the necessity of continuous creation of legal, political and cultural grounds for improvement and better functioning of social and civic dialogue

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

THE CONCEPTION OF DELIBERATIVE DEMOCRACY AS A RESPONSE TO THE DYSFUNCTION OF REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY

    No full text
W artykule zaprezentowano także konkretne przykłady istniejących − a także ciągle testowanych − deliberacyjno-inkluzyjnych form partycypacji publicznej i politycznej, stanowiących praktyczną stronę prezentowanej koncepcji deliberacyjnej demokracji.*The author presents the main foundations of the conception of deliberative democracy. This conception, whose theoretical background constitute two key theories of the contemporary philosophy of politics, i.e. the theory of communicative action and the theory of justice by Jürgen Habermas and John Rawls, respectively, has been worked on by various researchers, presented in papers since the 1980s and is regarded as an inspiring source of solutions (also in practical aspects) for correcting the inadequacies of narrowly procedural, representative democracy. Specific examples (still undergoing tests) of the functioning of the deliberative-inclusive forms of public and political participation that constitute the practical side of presented conception of deliberative democracy have also been presented

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
