Pandemic and crisis of democracy by André Duarte (2023) shows clearly how the misgovernment of Jail Bolsonaro was linked with the lack of trust in democracy and with her crisis. Duarte reflects from the present about the different consequences of Brazil’s recent past, specifically during the COVID-19 crisis. The author adopts a theoretical attitude that allows him to think the particular situation of Brazil from the perspective of several authors, among which we highlight the figure of Hannah Arendt.

    No full text
This research proposes to observe Ruy Duarte de Carvalho’s relationship with the lived space, especially in view of the work Vou lá visitar pastores (2000). Due to his personal inscription in both poetry and plots, the research superficially extends to other works of the author - Como se o mundo não tivesse leste (2008), Os papéis do inglês (2007), Actas da Maianga (2003), As paisagens propícias (2005), Lavra (2005), A câmara, a escrita e a coisa dita...(2008), A Terceira Metade (2009) e Desmedida (2010) - in order to trace a brief biographical overview of Duarte. We note that, for the author, the space transcends the limits of physical reality, since it is also the space of creation and fiction. For the 'other', this lived space is the extension of life itself, because this relation of belonging establishes a collective agreement between the subjects and the place. Ruy Duarte committed much of his life in the study of these relations, and therefore was willing to go live with them. Therewith, we sought to examine these issues, because from such experiences one has more authority to report about the “other”, as evidenced in the comparison between the experiences of the author and mine. In this sense, the implications that Literature and Anthropology have had for the development of such a writing project were also observed, as well as the way Ruy Duarte incorporates these discourses to create his own literary style. In addition, we seek to give visibility to the work of this important Angolan author, since his work is of great importance for the understanding of African culture. To account for all that, we set up a dialogue with numerous theorists from different disciplines, among which we highlight: James Clifford, Walter Benjamin, Gaston Bachelard, Homi Bhabha, Roland Barthes, Rita Chaves, Laura Cavalcante Padilha, Antonio Candido, Frantz Fanon, Rodolfo Kusch, François Laplantine, Ella Shohat / Robert Stam and Paul Zumthor

Leonora Duarte (1610–1678): Converso Composer in Antwerp

    No full text
Leonora Duarte (1610–1678), a converso of Jewish descent living in Antwerp, is the author of seven five-part Sinfonias for viol consort — the only known seventeenth-century viol music written by a woman. This music is testament to a formidable talent for composition, yet very little is known about the life and times in which Duarte produced her work. Her family were merchants and art collectors of Jewish descent who immigrated from Portugal in the early sixteenth century to escape the Inquisition; in exile in Antwerp, they achieved enormous success and provided the means with which to educate their children and integrate them into certain aspects of their business world. Duarte’s musical education reveals knowledge of many instruments as well as lessons in composition and it is manifested in the prominence her music played in her internationally-known family. Examining Duarte’s life presents a remarkable opportunity to consider performance within the early modern domestic sphere — this is a project that intersects with embodiment and display, as well as issues of gender and race. This dissertation considers Duarte and her music as products of diverse influences within the landscape of post-Inquisition Antwerp, as evidence of complex and symbiotic relationships with contemporaries, and as vital testimony to the cultural accomplishments of women conversos in early modern Europe, about which almost nothing is known. It draws upon musical analysis, critical theory, art history, Jewish studies, and my own performances and recording of her music. What emerges is a narrative in which the experience of domestic musical performance allowed Duarte to navigate the waters of social diplomacy within the broader context of cultural exchange in Antwerp

The creole chronicle of Vera Duarte

The article aims to investigate, in the writing of Vera Duarte\u27s only chronicle book, hybrid dictions typical of the gender and the place of the feminine in Cape Verdean society, when the chronicle, metamorphosed from historical to literary genre, is one of the humanizing instruments of valuing the issues of everyday life that intends the lowered space in which women were inserted in patriarchal societies. It can be seen that the author, in The word and the days, portrays her daily life through the subjectivity of everyday life, when documenting and analyzing aspects of Creole society.O artigo tem por objetivo investigar, na escrita do único livro de crônicas de Vera Duarte, dicções híbridas próprias do gênero na sociedade cabo-verdiana, quando a crônica, metamorfoseada de gênero histórico a literário, é um dos instrumentos humanizadores de valorização das questões do cotidiano que tenciona o espaço rebaixado em que a mulher foi inserida nas sociedades patriarcais.

    No full text
The interdisciplinary relationship between literature and anthropology has flourished in contemporary writing. Some authors build their characters based on long ethnographic research. The anonymous voices come alive when they are translated by the authoritative voices of the modern writers. Thus, the fiction becomes a way of saying what we see in different cultures. Seeing, interpreting, translating the world: the experience became the literary inspiration for many modern authors, and consequently, the discussion involving literature and anthropology has grown productively and is opening ways for new studies involving the two camps. A good example is the writing of an Angolan Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, mixing elements ethnographic in his literary work. Thus, the aim of this work is to show how to set up this relationship in the works of English papers (2007) and I'm going to visit pastors (2000). In both the narrator-author from the beginning shows unusual bibliographic traces. I cite as an example the constant referencial resumption of those characters that accompanied him on his "ethnographic wanderings "Vou lá visitar pastores". In this book the narrator /author tells his own anthropological experience and observe the experiences of the others to explain it with his own manners. We note that Ruy Duarte de Carvalho's look is turned to the peoples and cultures of Africa, so that even in "Os papéis do inglês", the history of this distinguished representative of the western civilization acquires secondary value throughout the work. Duarte produces narratives permeated by issues of identity, memory and authority in alternating roles assumed sometimes by "himself", other times by the "other". Therefore, in addition to reading the works cited, we will consider concepts like tradition and modernity and post-colonialism from the studies of Laura Padilla, and discuss the assumptions of James Clifford (2011) and Clifford Geertz (2009) on the proximities of anthropology and literature
