On April 12, 2022, Sheila Vieira de Camargo Grillo, a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo, kindly welcomed us to her home for this interview. We were able to hear the author talk about the essential points of a new approach to scientific investigation in Brazil, Comparative Discourse Analysis or Contrastive Discourse Analysis (the name adopted in France, where it originated). Professor Sheila Grillo, based on the questions we asked, spoke about, among other topics, the emergence of the epistemological principles of Comparative Discourse Analysis in Brazil, mentioned some of the important events that have taken place until 2022, and also told us about the importance of the work carried out between herself and other researchers from the Diálogo Research Group (CNPq/USP) with professors and researchers at CLESTHIA - axe sens et discours, from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3. Thus, we take this opportunity to thank the interviewee for the welcoming reception and for the information provided. We invite the reader of Linha D\u27Água to appreciate the result of this work

Modified Special Relativity on a fluctuating spacetime

It was recently proposed that deformations of the relativistic symmetry, as those considered in deformed special relativity (DSR), can be seen as the outcome of a measurement theory in the presence of non-negligible (albeit small) quantum gravitational fluctuations [S. Liberati, S. Sonego, and M. Visser, Phys. Rev. D 71, 045001 (2005).][R. Aloisio, A. Galante, A. Grillo, S. Liberati, E. Luzio, and F. Mendez, Phys. Rev. D 73, 045020 (2006).]. In this paper we explicitly consider the case of a spacetime described by a flat metric endowed with stochastic fluctuations and, for a free particle, we show that DSR-like nonlinear relations between the spaces of the measured and classical momenta, can result from the average of the stochastic fluctuations over a scale set to be the de Broglie wavelength of the particle. As illustrative examples we consider explicitly the averaging procedure for some simple stochastic processes and discuss the physical implications of our results

    A Travelogue from the Field

Chapter 5 of the book "Photography and Invisible Borders: Spaces of Imagination between Switzerland and Italy" develops a mobile epistemology of the Swiss-Italian borderscape, moving on the ground along trajectories of cross-border work and migration. Combining methodologies from urban studies, art history, photography, and practice-based research, the chapter builds a travelogue in two sections. A photographic narrative and a textual narrative, at the same time autonomous and interrelated, complement each other. The photographic narrative is made of a series of photographs shot by the author and of other images from different sources, including archives. Writings from fieldwork and extracts of conversations come together into the textual narrative. The photo-textual travelogue examines the multifaceted aspects of the Swiss-Italian border. It looks into the daily life and spatial dynamics leading to the border, encompassing such spaces as a nursery for cross-border workers’ children, a bar, commuter parking lots, and residential areas. The narrative unfolds through walks across border woods, interweaving local legends and reaching industrial compounds. The morning rush at the border, voices of workers, and flows towards the “fashion valley” industrial area and Lugano are explored. The temporal dimension is considered at a migrant centre in Como. A transnational train journey reveals use of the train’s use by cross-border workers and the challenges faced by migrants attempting to cross. Spatial shifts into car parks, used for both worker commutes and migrant accommodation after the so-called migration crisis of 2016, are examined. The chapter also explores night walks, smuggling activities, and the gendered dimension of the borderscape, particularly the presence of brothels. The complex strategy of migrant transfers from the northern border to Taranto in Southern Italy, implemented in response to the migration crisis, serves as a concluding focal point, illustrating the extended territorial dimensions of the border’s reality.Fondation Universitaire Stichtin

While studying novel writers of narrative in the literary field of the City of Buenos Aires between 2001 and 2010, narrators praised by critics, we will focus on one of the key players of the subject we study, Diego Grillo Trubba –because he condenses characteristics of this group and because he has been prolific in his productions in the internet. We will make a qualitativestudy and analyse his blogs to identify their characteristics, the types of exchanges taking place in them, the traits which make this platform different from other mediatizations where literature circulates, and we will compare various uses of this device. Firstly, we will refer to the theory on the relation between art and technology. Then we will trace the blogs administered by Grillo Trubba. We will analyze and compare the blogs among themselves and throughout several years using various variables. Therefore, we will identify two particular appropriations of blogs in the literary field: the so called “blognovels” and a form of reflection of face-to-face sociability and of consecrated instances of the field, the latter being the predominant us

Police organizational change in a post-September 11 environment: rhetoric or reality?

    No full text
The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks have forever changed the landscape of policing in the United States. Federal legislation, such as the USA PATRIOT Act and the National Strategy for Homeland Security (2002 & 2007), has had a profound impact on all levels of law enforcement. Specifically, local police agencies are now sharing responsibilities in the mission of preventing and detecting terrorist activities. The responsibilities to participate in terrorism investigations and respond to potential terrorism-related service calls have changed fundamentally the day-to-day functioning of local police. However, the federal government provides little direction as to how local law enforcement should accomplish this mission. Little information is available regarding how local law enforcement agencies are responding to the continued threat of terrorism. In addition, there is a lack of systematic research investigating whether the events of September 11 prompted organizational changes in local police departments to accommodate a counterterrorism mission. Therefore, it is not clear how local agencies are adapting to this new demand Using a qualitative methodology, this study explores the post-September 11 response experience of local police agencies in the United States through open-ended, semi-structured telephone interviews. The study included a national, non-probability, purposive sample of twenty-one (N=21) local police agencies throughout the country. Interviewees were sworn officers who currently served or previously served in counterterrorism capacities within the police departments. The study’s findings indicate the majority (95%) of police agencies in this study (20 out of 21) displayed a spectrum of organizational change. This ranged from changes at the operational strategy level to the implementation of new bureaus in support of counterterrorism objectives. The most frequent organizational change is the establishment of a specialized terrorism unit or the addition of homeland security functions into an existing intelligence unit. There is also evidence that local agencies are moving toward an intelligence-led policing philosophy. The findings from the research have several important policy implications for both the federal government and local law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, this study functions as a source for future research regarding the effects of terrorism on local law enforcement.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Michele Grill

Personnalisation et leadership. Le cas du Mouvement Cinq Étoiles (Personalisation and Leadership: the case of Five Star’ Movement)

    No full text
The article draws a characterisation of the late comer among the Italian populist parties, the Five Star’ Movement, led by the ancient comedian Beppe Grillo. Starting with a definition of what he means by “political personalisation”, the Author first describe this party as a political organisation in which the leader masters all the key areas – notably, communication, rules setting, and resolution of internal conflicts. Then, he argue that the Five Star Movement is a “personalist party”, in which Beppe Grillo embodies a powerful but non-charismatic leader. In the closing section, the Author tries to shed light above the probable evolutions of the party, particularly dealing with its institutionalisation process
