An Introduction to Preservation Challenges and Potential Solutions for Scrapbooks in Archival Collections

    No full text
Among the multitude of preservation problems archivists and special collections curators face in their collections, arguably one of the most challenging is the preservation of historic scrapbooks. Although scrapbooks do not often comprise a large portion of collections in archives or special collections, they are critically important as research tools, and their composition, irreplaceability, and complicated degradation create preservation challenges for even the most seasoned collection manager. These materials have long troubled conservators and archivists, but few have written on the topic due to the array of variability in their format, types of enclosures, and deterioration. Written for an archival audience, this article explores the composition of most scrapbooks, outlines the most common methods of deterioration, offers some simple preservation options, and considers the advantages and limitations of conservation treatment and reformatting options for these unique materials.Submitted by Jennifer Teper ([email protected]) on 2016-05-20T16:58:26Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Teper--Scrapbook Preservation Edited.doc: 2115072 bytes, checksum: 512870a31703e343d8adbb27e658bbb3 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2016-05-20T16:58:27Z (GMT). Alcune note sulla distribuzione di rus. sejčas/teper' e it. ora/adesso

The present corpus-based study aims at investigating possible areas of cross-linguistic convergence regarding both the semantic and pragmatic properties and the syntactic distribution of two pairs of Russian (sejčas vs. teper') and Italian (ora vs. adesso) pure indexicals which, much alike the English now, can be alternatively used either as temporal operators or as textual pragmatic markers. The analysis has been carried out following a two-step procedure: on the one hand, a statistical sample of 600 examples has been manually extracted from the Russian-Italian parallel subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus; on the other hand, some of the Italian contexts have been presented in a separate questionnaire specifically designed for a randomized sample of Italian native speakers.  The preliminary results seem to support the working hypothesis that in Russian sejčas and teper', besides their respective prototypical functions of temporal operator and textual pragmatic marker, are assigned a partially overlapping array of contextually determined meanings within the same continuum; moreover, in the contemporary language the functional domain of sejčas seems to be expanding and taking over most of the contexts which would previously feature the sole teper'. In Italian, on the contrary, the opposition between ora and adesso (which can interchangeably translate both sejčas and teper' with no significant semantic deviation) seems to be regulated exclusively by diatopic and/or diaphasic criteria. While there have been a great number of diversity efforts across many areas of library science and administration, there has been little focus on diversity within preservation. This project presents and interprets the results of a survey on diversity in the field of library preservation and conservation

Effects of 2 inhaled corticosteroids on growth. Results of a randomised controlled trial

    No full text
Objective To compare the long-term effect of treatment with fluticasone propionate or beclomethasone dipropionate on growth in asthmatic children. Design Prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study. Setting Children requiring regular treatment with inhaled corticosteroids and with a sexual maturity rating of Tanner stage 1 (prepubertal). Patients Three hundred forty-three children aged 4 to 11 years with asthma. The growth population (excluding patients with protocol violations likely to affect growth measurements) included 277 patients. Interventions Fluticasone propionate or beclomethasone dipropionate, both at a dosage of 200 μg administered twice daily via a dry powder inhaler (Diskhaler) for 12 months. Main Outcome Measures Growth velocity, lung function, and serum and urinary cortisol levels. Results The adjusted mean growth velocity in the fluticasone group was significantly greater than that in the beclomethasone group (5.01 [SE, 0.14] vs 4.10 [SE, 0.15] cm/y; difference, 0.91 cm; 95% confidence interval, 0.63-1.20 cm; P<.001). Both treatments improved lung function, with significant differences in favor of fluticasone. Adverse events were similar in both groups, and there were no significant differences in effect on serum and urinary cortisol levels. Conclusions The more favorable risk-benefit ratio of fluticasone indicates that this agent is preferable to beclomethasone for the long-term treatment of children with asthma, especially if moderate doses are required

Historic Scrapbooks in Libraries and Archives – the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

    No full text
Anybody who works in or with library and archival collections knows that historic scrapbooks are some of the most engaging and personal materials found in our collections. However, they are also one of the most challenging to care for and provide access to. This talk offers a brief history of scrapbooks, their structure and materials, as well as examples of what makes them so special. Jennifer Hain Teper then offers a series of case studies of how several challenging scrapbooks and photo albums from the Gwendolyn Brooks Papers were approached for conservation and digitization as part of a Save America’s Treasures Grant at the University of Illinois Libraries from 2020-2023. Jennifer Hain Teper serves as the Velde Professor and Preservation Librarian at the University of Illinois Libraries overseeing conservation, collections care, digital preservation and digitization services throughout the library system. Before her current position began in 2009, she served as the head of conservation at the University of Illinois libraries from 2001-2008. Jennifer graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in August of 2000 with a MLIS and Certificate of Advanced Study in the Conservation and Preservation of Library and Archival Materials. She teaches several preservation and conservation related courses in the Graduate School of Information Science at the University of Illinois and also serves as an instructor at the Center for Collections Care. Her current research interests focus on the prioritization of preservation actions in academic and research libraries relative to holdings in shared print repositories and DEIA efforts within conservation education. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation

Embedding resource sharing evidence in cooperative collection development

    No full text
Although much has been written about cooperative collection development and area studies collections, little research exists that assesses the effectiveness of these programs or their impact beyond their home institution. Items in these collections are often scarcely held or “hidden” due to either a lack of specialized knowledge to facilitate their discovery or the financial resources required to maintain them. This session will examine lending history of developed area studies collections in order to evaluate the impact of resource sharing and cooperative collection development. By examining five years’ of a major research library’s resource sharing data for outgoing materials in Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) and outgoing materials published with a foreign imprint, the authors will seek to draw conclusions about a cooperatively stewarded collection and make recommendations about the directions that research libraries should pursue in order to provide service at a regional and/or national level.Open Restriction set for Item 102866 on 2017-08-15T15:56:04Z with date null by [email protected] by Thomas Teper ([email protected]) on 2017-08-15T16:00:16Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Teper et al - EBLIP9 - Embedding....pptx: 2343049 bytes, checksum: ac6aebd91a2fba6dcc51fa8ae3506cd9 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2017-08-15T16:00:16Z (GMT). The Shadow Acquisitions Budget: APCs and Open Access Publications at a Research University

    No full text
A great deal has been written in the last several years about open access (OA) publishing in academic settings, both Green and Gold. In particular, the Pay It Forward (PIF) project and the OA2020 initiative focused on the feasibility of transitioning to a Gold OA environment supported by article processing charges (APCs). Several studies pointed out that faculty in Research I universities tend to publish in Gold OA journals that carry APC charges. Yet, the institutional investment in OA publications and APCs remains difficult to identify and assess. APCs are often paid through a variety of sources, ranging from author discretionary and grant funds to institutional subvention pools. These APC expenditures form a shadow scholarly resources acquisitions budget, with funding typically not coming from library budgets. This presentation provides a quantitative assessment of one R1 institution’s level of publication in open access publishing venues. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign employs a SciVal PURE researcher profile system called Illinois Experts. The authors examined 27,300 journal articles from 2013 to mid-2018 contained in Illinois Experts. The number and percentage of publications appearing in Gold APC journals and other OA venues was calculated using scripts that searched against the DOAJ database and the UnPaywall platform. The total APC costs over the six-year period were calculated and the average APC charge was determined. The presentation will report these results.Open Restriction set for Item 109283 on 2019-01-17T20:15:48Z with date null by [email protected] by Thomas Teper ([email protected]) on 2019-01-17T20:22:53Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Mon_Mischo_Teper_ShadowAcq.pdf: 458435 bytes, checksum: 26a89ddd98472f75a00130590ef05164 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2019-01-17T20:22:53Z (GMT).
