Expected and Predicted Realignments: The FF/DM Exchange Rate During the EMS

    No full text
An empirical model of time-varying realignment risk in an exchange rate target zone is developed. Expected rates of devaluation are estimated as the difference between interest race differentials and estimated expected rates of depreciation within the exchange rate band, using French Franc/Deutsche Mark data during the European Monetary System. The behavior of estimated expected rates of depreciation accord well with the theoretical model of Bertola-Svensson (1990) . We are also able to predict actual realignments with some success.

Contemporary Challenges in Nordic Feminist Legal Studies

    No full text
This chapter discusses the traditions, developments and challenges of the 'Nordic model of equality’. Discussions on legal personality or anti-discrimination have merited less interest than the collective equality policies of the welfare state. A liberal discourse on individual rights has been fairly weak in the Nordic countries. Trust in the ability of law and politics to improve the situation of women has occurred quite naturally in the Nordic context. The Nordic countries and especially Sweden are well known throughout the world for their actively promoted sex equality politics. Equality politics in Finland in the 1960s and onwards were guided by the fact that Finland had one of the highest rates of women in gainful employment in Europe. The first wave of feminism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries gradually resulted in a formal equality between women and men. The 'second wave feminism’ can be understood as a disappointment of the outcome of formal equality. © 2004, Eva-Maria Svensson, Anu Pylkkänen and Johanna Niemi-Kiesilänen

Response to Seitz and Tödter, 'How the P* Model Rationalizes Monetary Targeting: A Comment on Svensson'

    No full text
Seitz and TÎdter argue, counter to Svensson, that the P* model provides a rationale for money-growth targeting. In particular, they argue that 'money growth targeting is a special form of inflation forecast targeting based on a "limited" information set. In contrast to "full information" inflation forecast targeting, money growth targeting is likely to be more robust under changing conditions of the real world'. Introduction: Nordic Feminist Legal Studies at a Crossroads

    No full text
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book argues that Nordic equality has been based on sameness to such a degree that it leaves little room for politicians and lawyers to recognize and appreciate difference. It discusses the legal framework of financing home care in Norway. The book focuses on the relation of dependence and self-support in family, tax and social law. It shows that normative and structural patterns are shaped according to divergent models in different areas of law: the nuclear family model and the individual model. Taking a constructivist stand, the book suggests that law also plays a crucial role in the construction of sex and sexuality today. It describes the international discourse is primarily based on the civil and political rights of an individual as the norm for human rights. © 2004, Eva-Maria Svensson, Anu Pylkkänen and Johanna Niemi-Kiesilänen

Targeting vs. Instrument Rules for Monetary Policy

    No full text
Svensson (JEL, 2003) argues strongly that specific targeting rules first order optimality conditions for a specific objective function and model are normatively superior to instrument rules for the conduct of monetary policy. That argument is based largely upon four main objections to the latter plus a claim concerning the relative interest-instrument variability entailed by the two approaches. The present paper considers the four objections in turn, and advances arguments that contradict all of them. Then in the paper's analytical sections, it is demonstrated that the variability claim is incorrect, for a neo-canonical model and also for a variant with one-period-ahead plans used by Svensson, providing that the same decision-making errors are relevant under the two alternative approaches. Arguments relating to general targeting rules and actual central bank practice are also included.
