Prophecy, prophets and the problem of truth in Latin late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages
Between the 4th and 9th century AC, many Latin Christian thinkers explore the nature and possible definitions of ‘prophecy’ from a philosophical point of view. The two main theories are found in the works of Augustine of Hippo and Gregory the Great, who agree on the idea of prophecy as «divine message», but diverge on the role of the prophet, who for the former is an interpreter with an active role, for the latter is a medium of the message rather than its author. Gregory’s theory seems to be more common – being more easily understandable – in the Early Middle Ages.
All thinkers quoted in the essay (apart from Augustine and Gregory, Cassiodorus, Isidore of Seville, Alcuin of York and Rabanus Maurus) also deal with the problem of truth in relation to prophecy and prophets: is there a criterion with which to establish with certainty who is a real prophet and who is a false one? This article attempts to demonstrate, on the basis of the De doctrina christiana of Augustine and of the Liber visionum of Othlo of Sankt Emmeram, that one of the signs of the truthfulness of a true prophet could well be the nature and form of language he uses
Objectives
To perform a literature review in order to evaluate the clinical outcomes of restorations supported by implants placed immediately after extraction in endodontically infected sockets.
Materials and methods
A MedlineTM and EMBASETM search was performed on articles published from 1966 to April 2009. A minimum of 6 month follow-up was required.
Results
Immediate implant placement after extraction of teeth with endodontic infection, performed after careful socket debridement, can be considered a viable technique. The reported survival rates are similar to those reported for secondary endodontic treatment.
Conclusions
Since the clinical reports on this topic are scarce, the level of evidence is low and the follow-up period is limited, more well-designed studies are required in order to assess relevance of this treatment alternative
The article focuses on Maimonides’ political philosophy (and theology of history), taking the cue from his interpretations of Jacob’s dream (Gen. 28, 12-14), as presented in Mishneh Torah, Yesodei ha-Torah (7, 3), in the Epistle to Yemen, and in the Guide (Introduction; I, 15, II, 10). Key-themes (such as the nature of prophecy, messianic redemption, and our knowledge of physical and metaphysical realities) are addressed by comparing Maimonides’ approach to Midrashic and Talmudic traditions, to the ‘Platonism’ of al-Fārābi, and to ibn Bājja’s ideal of solitary life. Finally, Maimonides’ Jacob (a philosopher and prophet) is put vis-à-vis Yehudah ha-Lewi’s Jacob: the last single individual who was in direct contact with the divine power, before begetting the Twelve Tribes
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
