The linear constraints in Poincare’ and Korn type inequalities

    No full text
We investigate the character of the linear constraints which are needed for Poincaré and Korn type inequalities to hold. We especially analyze constraints which depend on restriction on subsets of positive measure and on the trace on a portion of the boundary

Thin-walled beams: the case of an open multi-rectangular cross-section

    No full text
In this paper we present an asymptotic analysis of the three-dimensional problem for a thin linearly elastic cantilever Omega_ε = omega_ε × (0, l) with rectangular cross-section omega_ε of sides ε and ε^2, as ε goes to zero. Under suitable assumptions on the given loads, we show that the three-dimensional problem converges in a variational sense to the classical one-dimensional model for extension, flexure and torsion of thin-walled beams

Detecting an inclusion in an elastic body by boundary measurements

    No full text
We consider the problem of determining, within an elastic isotropic body Ω\Omega, the possible presence of an inclusion D made of different elastic material from boundary measurements of traction and displacement. We prove that the volume (size) of D can be estimated, from above and below, by an easily expressed quantity related to work depending only on the boundary traction and displacement

    Thin notched beams

    No full text
The three-dimensional elasticity energy for a notched rod under axial loads is shown to converge in a variational sense to a class of one-dimensional models with a localized compliance when the beam becomes very slender and when the ratio between the depth and the width of each notch vanishes in a suitable way. Also the case of notched thermal conductors is considered, in a parallel treatment, because it falls in a similar but simpler framework

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

An Introduction to Classical Inverse Eigenvalue Problems

    No full text
Aim of these notes is to present an elementary introduction to classical inverse eigenvalue problems in one dimension. Attention is mainly focused on Sturm-Liouville differential operators given in canonical form on a finite interval. A uniqueness result for a fourth order Euler-Bernoulli operator is also discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
