Is it just about love : Filin and politics in pre-revolutionary Cuba
This thesis is concerned with the role of Filin music in processes of social and political change. It examines how Filin, a style of Cuban urban folk music that developed in Havana in the 1940s and 50s, was constitutive of the historical context in which it developed and consequently, how Filineros expressed their social realities in their songs. Many Filineros were associated with leftist organizations such as the People’s Socialist Party, workers’ unions, and with underground activism. They lived in times of political upheaval and widespread mobilization preceding the Revolution of 1959. However, their songs’ lyrics seem to ignore Filineros’ political lives, and focus solely on romance and the intimacy of love. This thesis addresses this paradox: Why does there seem to be such a disjuncture between Filineros’ affiliative and oppositional activities and their romantic and self-contained lyrics?
Drawing from Filineros memories, this paper explains Filin lyrics’ detachment from the oppositional mobilization the musicians were involved in. First, the repression against communism that followed the post-WWII years in Cuba prevented Filineros from openly expressing their leftist views and activist experiences in their songs’ lyrics. Secondly, Filineros understood Filin as a creative outlet and artistic experience, and not as an instrument for political opposition. Thirdly, some of the Filin musicians interviewed believed that music was impotent to create substantial social or political change.
Nevertheless, beyond Filineros’ worldview, I argue that Filin songs not only carry aesthetic meaning as expressions of human emotions, but that the practice of Filin constituted them as political actors. Filin gatherings’ sequential participatory features, and consequently, Filin's functions as social entertainer and artistic unifier highlight this music’s agency; Filin's uniting power as a musical movement promoted a sense of affiliation among Filineros in which political practices and ideologies were shaped and solidified. In other words, it is through music making that Filineros’ ideas, values and ways of life were stimulated and mobilized. As such, Filin music was constitutive of new political identities, and constructed its political relevance more through the context of lived experience than through its musicological traits, its lyrics, or even its musicians’ intentions.Arts, Faculty ofHistory, Department ofGraduat
Suomi on teemamaana Frankfurtin kirjamessuilla vuonna 2014.
My thesis deals with internationalization and promotion of mobility of writers by FILI (Finnish Literature Exchange).
The objective of my thesis is to examine how the administrative processes of FILI’s mobility support should be developed, in order to serve both the traveling writers as well as the organizing parties abroad. An important aspect is also the development of FILI’s internal processes.
FILI supports annually writers’ visits to 50-70 literature events around the world. The writers appear in book fairs, literature festivals and increasingly travel to launching and marketing events to publicize their translated works. Finland will be a Guest of Honor at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair. The Frankfurt Book Fair is the most important event of the world in the area of literature and media, and therefore the status of Guest of Honor is a challenging export effort for Finland, Finnish writers, publishing companies and the entire literature branch – as well as for the implementing organization FILI. Solely during the fair week around 50 Finnish writers will appear at the fair to present their work. The Frankfurt theme project is much more than merely a book fair event that lasts less than a week: it is an export project of Finnish culture that lasts the whole year and is implemented in cooperation with the German field of culture.
My thesis starts by examining the activities and operating environment of FILI, and explaining the part that the mobility support for writers has in FILI’s work. To form the background for the development of administrative processes I have charted out the support forms of three organizations managing mobility support: The Cultural Program of the European Union, the Mobility Support Programs of the Nordic Culture Point, and the programs of the Central Council of Art. After the comparative analysis I chose as the theoretical background the standardization of the processes and through this the service formulation of the activities. Viewpoints of writers are studied by analyzing travel reports.
As conclusion I present concrete ideas for development, assess the applicability of my development initiative in practice in my own organization as well as the possibilities to adapt the developed activity models in other artistic sectors

The value of our literary exports is increasing considerably and translation rights are being sold more than ever before. The most common path in becoming a translator of Finnish literature is through Finnish language and culture studies. Alarmingly the offer of these studies at universities abroad is constantly decreasing. However without translators there is no literary exports.
The purpose of this thesis was to find out how the Suomea Suomessa (Finnish in Finland) internship programme at FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange has affected the former interns’ career choices. Did the interns become translators? Would there be something to develop within the application process or in the training programme? The programme is coordinated by Finnish National Agency for Education.
The thesis was carried out by researching FILI, the processes of literary exports and translators of literature for background information. The most valuable material was acquired by conducting a survey among former interns who did their internships at FILI during years 2001–2017. This material provided information that helped in evaluating the programme and in generating new ideas to further develop the internship. It also served in pointing out the larger impact of the internship programme for wider audience. Similar surveys have not been made previously for FILI.
According to the results the internship has been viable for all parties – for the interns, for FILI and for Finnish National Agency for Education. 89 % of the former interns who filled the survey have worked as translators after completing their internship at FILI. The survey revealed a few things in the application process and in the training programme that could be fine tuned. That way the programme could become even more useful for the intern in his path in becoming a professional translator of Finnish literature. However FILI cannot solely be responsible for training new generations of translators. This thesis proves the importance of Finnish language and culture studies abroad, as it is directly connected to our literary exports. Measures must be taken in order to secure a sufficient amount of translators of literature in the future. The internship programme at FILI is one of those measures and a very important one

Studies towards the exploitation of sonochemically formed microelectrode arrays for the development of electrochemical sensors.
Microelectrodes offer a number of advantages for exploitation as electrochemical sensors
such as imparting stir-independence to sensor responses and allowing lower limits of
detection to be minimised. Microelectrode arrays offer an attractive route for increasing the
current responses of microelectrodes, whilst still retaining their advantageous properties.
Despite this, no commercial sensors, to date, have successfully employed microelectrode
arrays, largely due to conventional fabrication routes proving too costly to be economically
viable for the production of disposable sensing devices. Previous work carried out by this
research group has described a novel and patented procedure for the fabrication of
microelectrode arrays via the sonochemical ablation of insulating polymer films
electrochemically deposited upon conductive surfaces. This format lends itself to mass
fabrication due to the simplicity and inexpensiveness of the approach.
This thesis describes work focussed towards the optimisation of each of the individual
components involved in the formation of sonochemically fabricated microelectrode arrays.
In particular, factors and techniques that may facilitate the commercial exploitation and mass
fabrication of such arrays as generic sensing templates are described.
Screen printed carbon has been investigated for its suitability as a host electrode. The
comparative use of a number of possible activation methods to increase amperometric
current responses at such electrodes is also described. Homogeneous
poly(o-phenylenediamine) films of -40 nm thickness formed at the surfaces of screen printed
carbon electrodes via the anodic electropolymerisation of o-phenylenediamine are shown to
serve as effective diffusional barriers, thus insulating the underlying carbon electrodes.
Microelectrode arrays formed by the sonochemical ablation of such films to expose
microscopic areas of the underlying conductive substrates are seen to possess electrode
element populations of -7.3 x 104 cm
2. Over 400 such sensors are shown to be able to be
fabricated simultaneously with reproducibility of responses <4% relative standard deviation.
Amperometric and cyclic voltammetric characterisations of the thus produced
microelectrode arrays performed in model redox systems are shown to agree with accepted
theoretical microelectrode behaviour, demonstrating sigmoidal shaped voltammograms,
fluctuations in steady-state current responses of <10% with convection, scan rate
independence and fast attainment (<20 seconds) of steady-state responses.
Arrays of this type are also demonstrated to be suitable for exploitation within aqueous
chlorine sensing devices, offering detection limits of <0.005 mg/l free chlorine, representing
an order of magnitude lower than those obtainable via contemporary optical wet chemistry
based approaches. In order to demonstrate further the applicability of this approach to the
mass fabrication of disposable devices, methods for the deposition of a chemical modifying
layer are also investigated, to avoid the need for additional reagents
