Ring structures and mean first passage time in networks
In this paper we address the problem of the calculation of the mean first passage time on generic graphs. We focus in particular on the mean first passage time on a node s for a random walker starting from a generic, unknown, node x. We introduce an approximate scheme of calculation which maps the original process in a Markov process in the space of the so-called rings, described by a transition matrix of size O(ln N∕ln ⟨k⟩×ln N∕ln ⟨k⟩), where N is the size of the graph and ⟨k⟩ the average degree in the graph. In this way one has a drastic reduction of degrees of freedom with respect to the size N of the transition matrix of the original process, corresponding to an extremely low computational cost. We first apply the method to the Erdös-Renyi random graphs for which the method allows for almost perfect agreement with numerical simulations. Then we extend the approach to the Barabási-Albert graph, as an example of scale-free graph, for which one obtains excellent results. Finally we test the method with two real-world graphs, Internet and a network of the brain, for which we obtain accurate results
Artificial sequences and complexity measures
In this paper we exploit concepts of information theory to address the fundamental problem of identifying and defining the most suitable tools for extracting, in a automatic and agnostic way, information from a generic string of characters. We introduce in particular a class of methods which use in a crucial way data compression techniques in order to define a measure of remoteness and distance between pairs of sequences of characters (e.g. texts) based on their relative information content. We also discuss in detail how specific features of data compression techniques could be used to introduce the notion of dictionary of a given sequence and of artificial text and we show how these new tools can be used for information extraction purposes. We point out the versatility and generality of our method that applies to any kind of corpora of character strings independently of the type of coding behind them. We consider as a case study linguistic motivated problems and we present results for automatic language recognition, authorship attribution and self-consistent classification
Cultural route to the emergence of linguistic categories
Categories provide a coarse-grained description of the world. A fundamental question is whether categories simply mirror an underlying structure of nature or instead come from the complex interactions of human beings among themselves and with the environment. Here, we address this question by modeling a population of individuals who co-evolve their own system of symbols and meanings by playing elementary language games. The central result is the emergence of a hierarchical category structure made of two distinct levels: a basic layer, responsible for fine discrimination of the environment, and a shared linguistic layer that groups together perceptions to guarantee communicative success. Remarkably, the number of linguistic categories turns out to be finite and small, as observed in natural languages
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
