    Tarik Saleh Oral History

    No full text
Tarik Saleh attended the American University in Cairo as an undergraduate student from 1969 to 1973. He tells the story of his Egyptian father Ahmed Abdel Ghaffar Saleh and Scottish mother Gertrude Florence Farmer marrying after meeting at graduate school in Scotland in the 1930s. Saleh speaks about his father’s career as an agricultural scientist and academic in Egypt, where he held Dean positions at Alexandria and Ain Shams universities, and offers a portrait of his father’s service as Vice President at AUC from 1965 to 1974. Numbering among Abdel Ghaffar Saleh’s contributions were intervention with government authorities to keep the AUC campus safe and avoid potential nationalization in the wake of the 1967 War, securing release of detained students and facilitating work permissions for foreign personnel, addressing student admission and staff labor issues, and efforts that resulted in AUC receiving official recognition of its academic degrees. Abdel Ghaffar Saleh’s professional relationships and contacts are highlighted as key to interceding with government officials to assist AUC, along with his integrity and effective but low-keyed managerial style. The way that AUC administrators handled his father’s departure, and how he was recognized in later years, are decried. Tarik Saleh offers a portrait of his own upbringing in Alexandria and Cairo’s Heliopolis, including schooling, recreation, and taking up ballet dancing in the footsteps of his sister, renowned ballerina Magda Saleh. He recalls the political climate in Egypt in his youth (and how his father navigated it), and his friendship with the sons of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, including anecdotes about Nasser and his family. The stories of one son borrowing the sports car of Molly Bartlett, wife of AUC President Thomas Bartlett (and the resulting damage to the automobile), and of daughter Mona Nasser’s time at AUC, are told. A vivid account of a year of high school and travel spent in the United States through an exchange program is also given. Saleh entered AUC in 1969, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1973. Saleh recounts his role in AUC’s Student Government and its reorganization as the Student Union. Also discussed is the political engagement of AUC students, including their discontent with Egypt’s political situation prior to the 1973 War, and Saleh’s representing AUC students in making an address to the Egyptian Parliament. He describes the AUC student body, including social groups, fashion trends, and relationships between male and female students (after graduation Saleh married a classmate). Student activities and events like athletics, the folklore troupe, the talent show, and the Miss AUC contest are also recalled, as well as Dean of Students Frank Blanning and other administrators he and other students interacted with. A sketch of Saleh’s post-AUC career in Egypt’s petroleum and natural gas profession, including an account of Hurghada in the 1970s, is also provided

Photonic circuits for generating modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement

    No full text
We consider the design of photonic circuits that make use of Ti:LiNbO(3) diffused channel waveguides to generate photons with various combinations of modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement. Down-converted photon pairs are generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a two-mode waveguide (TMW). We study a class of photonic circuits comprising: 1) a nonlinear periodically poled TMW structure; 2) a set of single-mode waveguide (SMW)- and TMW-based couplers arranged in such a way that they suitably separate the three photons comprising the SPDC process; and, for some applications, 3) a holographic Bragg grating that acts as a dichroic reflector. The first circuit produces two frequency-degenerate down-converted photons, each with even spatial parity, in two separate SMWs. Changing the parameters of the elements allows this same circuit to produce two nondegenerate down-converted photons that are entangled in frequency or simultaneously entangled in frequency and polarization. The second photonic circuit is designed to produce modal entanglement by distinguishing the photons on the basis of their frequencies. A modified version of this circuit can be used to generate photons that are doubly entangled in mode number and polarization. The third photonic circuit is designed to manage dispersion by converting modal, spectral, and polarization entanglement into path entanglement

ABSTRACT Adolescence is a stage of biological and psychological growth and development that occurs between childhood and maturity. Adolescent girls aged 15-19 years in West Java in 2022 numbered 399,284 people. Adolescents strive to define themselves by using models from others, withthe presence of the father of a child will develop and become a stronger person. Theresearch is aimed at finding out whether there is a relationship between father’s involvement in parenting and the self-concept of adolescent girls at SMK Bani Saleh Bekasi in 2022. This type of research is quantitative research, the research time is in September 2022 at SMK Bani Saleh Bekasi. The type of analysis used is pearson's Product Moment Correlation Test with The sampling technique uses total sampling techniques. The sample in this study was 130 adolescent girls at SMK Bani Saleh. The results of the study obtained the role of the low category there were as many as 4 (3%) & the high category there were 96 (97%). While the concept of positive category there are as many as 121 (93%) & ample negative category concept there are as many as 9 (7%). The results of the analysis test obtained a value of r: 0.671 P-V alue 0.000 < 0.05 which means that there is a strong significant relationship with a positive direction between father involvement in parenting and the self-concept of adolescent girls. Suggestions to researchers can then add other variable variables in conducting research and for students so that they can be used as initial reference data in conducting related research. THE STRUCTURE OF PHOTON BASED ON SALEH THEORY

    No full text
Atoms are made up of electrons, protons and neutrons, the most important Subatomic particles. The electron is an elementary particle and the proton and neutron consist of two different kinds of elementary particles (up and down quarks). But we do not know the structure of the electron, proton, and neutron. Saleh Theory defines a structure for electron as a hollow sphere, for proton as continuous texture and the neutron as a proton core and Electron shell. And these entire particles are made of the photon. Here we have defined the structure for the photon that has about 14 billion years old. Of course, the photon with 14 billion years old should have the structure. Saleh Theory has defined the structure for the photon as some very small particles, named “Saleh particle”, rotating around the center’ named as “Cidtone”. With this definition, Saleh Theory is going to explain the photon with a different color

Toward a Taxonomy and Computational Models of Abnormalities in Images

    No full text
The human visual system can spot an abnormal image, and reason about what makes it strange. This task has not received enough attention in computer vision. In this paper we study various types of atypicalities in images in a more comprehensive way than has been done before. We propose a new dataset of abnormal images showing a wide range of atypicalities. We design human subject experiments to discover a coarse taxonomy of the reasons for abnormality. Our experiments reveal three major categories of abnormality: object-centric, scene-centric, and contextual. Based on this taxonomy, we propose a comprehensive computational model that can predict all different types of abnormality in images and outperform prior arts in abnormality recognition.Peer reviewe
