Preface: Boris V. Andrianov and the Archaeology of Irrigation

    No full text
Ancient Irrigation Systems in the Aral Sea Area is the English translation of Boris Vasilevich Andrianov’s work, Drevnie orositelnye sistemy priaralya, concerning the study of ancient irrigation systems and the settlement pattern in the historical region of Khorezm, around the southern Aral Sea (today northern Uzbekistan and western Kazakhstan). This work holds a special place in the Soviet archaeological school because of the results obtained through a multidisciplinary approach combining aerial archaeological surveys, fieldwork and excavations with disciplines such as geography, botany and geology. This translation has been enriched by the addition of introductions written by several eminent scholars from the region regarding the importance of the Khorezm Archaeological-Ethnographic Expedition, the figure of Boris V. Andrianov and his landmark study almost 50 years after the original publication

Bosonic spectral action induced from anomaly cancellation

    No full text
We show how the fields and particles of the standard model can be naturally realized in noncommutative gauge theory. Starting with a Yang-Mills matrix model in more than four dimensions, an SU(n) gauge theory on a Moyal-Weyl space arises with all matter

Spectral action, Weyl anomaly and the Higgs-Dilaton potential.

    No full text
We show how the bosonic spectral action emerges from the fermionic action by the renormalization group flow in the presence of a dilaton and the Weyl anomaly. The induced action comes out to be basically the Chamseddine-Connes spectral action introduced in the context of noncommutative geometry. The entire spectral action describes gauge and Higgs fields coupled with gravity. We then consider the effective potential and show, that it has the desired features of a broken and an unbroken phase, with the roll down

General solution of scalar field cosmology with a (piecewise) exponential potential

    No full text
We study in detail the general solution for a scalar field cosmology with an exponential potential, correcting some imprecisions, encountered previously in the literature. In addition, we generalize this solution for a piecewise exponential potential, which is continuous, but not smooth (with cusps)

Brane world generation by matter and gravity

Abstract: We present a non-compact 4 + 1 dimensional model with a local strong four-fermion interaction supplementing it with gravity. In the strong coupling regime it reveals the spontaneous translational symmetry breaking which eventually leads to the formation of domain walls, or thick 3-branes, embedded in the AdS 5 manifold. To describ e this phenomenon we construct the appropriate low-energy effective Action and find kink-like vacuum solutions in the quasi-flat riemannian metric. We discuss the generation of ultra-low-energy 3 + 1 dimensional physics and we establish the relation among the bulk five dimensional gravitational constant, the brane Newton's constants and the curvature of AdS5 space-time. The plausible relation between the compositeness scale of the scalar matter and the symmetry breaking scale is shown to support the essential decoupling of branons, the scalar fluctuations of the brane, from the Standard Model matter, supporting their possible role in the dark matter saturation. The induced cosmological constant on the brane does vanish due to exact cancellation of matter and gravity contributions
