The Existential Philosophy of David Foster Wallace
It is no secret that philosophy and literature are often closely intertwined: beginning with works as old as Plato’s dialogues, philosophers have always seen the merit in utilizing fiction to share philosophy with both their contemporaries and with the general public. The most prominent existentialists are perhaps the most famous for using literature as a vehicle for their philosophical ideas: Friedrich Nietzsche, Søren Kierkegaard, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoir, and Jean-Paul Sartre all published some kind of fiction, through parables, novels, plays, and so forth. Likewise, I will argue in this thesis that renowned writer David Foster Wallace was not only a writer—though his career choice reflects his status as an author, the works he produced reflect his status as a philosopher
A rational convex program for linear Arrow-Debreu markets
We present a new flow-type convex program describing equilibrium solutions to linear Arrow-Debreu markets. Whereas convex formulations were previously known ([Nenakov and Primak 1983; Jain 2007; Cornet 1989]), our program exhibits several new features. It provides a simple necessary and sufficient condition and a concise proof of the existence and rationality of equilibria, settling an open question raised by Vazirani [2012]. As a consequence, we also obtain a simple new proof of the result in Mertens [2003] that the equilibrium prices form a convex polyhedral set
The Importance of Oedipus: Infamous Complex or Existential Hero?
The concept of free will is practically inescapable in modern day philosophy. Indeed, questions regarding the power of free will are of no shortage in philosophy: While one philosopher might assert that humans have absolute free will, another may accept free will as present but questions how powerful it is, while a third explores the implications of a deterministic universe in which there is a complete absence of free will, and so it goes on until an entire library can be filled with texts that deal exclusively with freedom. I make note of this modern captivation with the concept of free will not because I intend to add this work to the aforementioned figurative library, but to remind my reader of a simple, chronological fact: the ancient Greeks did not have a concept of free will, nor did they care to question the significance of such a notion. It is of the utmost importance that this fact be viewed not as a mere triviality; rather, this knowledge must be taken into account when considering any aspect of an ancient Greek text that, to the modern eye, appears to be concerned with a battle between free will and Determinism. To make an argument in which an ancient Greek author is portrayed as a supporter of the concept of absolute free will is an anachronistic fallacy and must be disputed as one. Resultantly, although Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus looks to the modern eye to be a play centered around issues of Determinism and free will, it is no such thing; instead, the play addresses questions of choice, agency, and most of all, meaning. Through the lens of Albert Camus’ philosophy of the absurd, and backed by a philological investigation of the presence of ‘fate’ in the Sophoclean universe, I will argue that that Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus gives a firm answer to if and how man can go on living in a world that he has discovered to be meaningless
Joint use of reconfigurable antenna pattern and adaptive coding and modulation in satellite communications at high frequency bands.
The Telecommunication market is driven by the increasing need of the end users for multimedia services which require high data rates. Within the fixed satellite service, frequency bandwidths wide enough to carry such high data rates are to be found in Ka band (26 − 40 GHz), and Q/V bands (40 − 50 GHz). However, at Ka band and above, transmitted signals can be severely affected by tropospheric attenuation for substantial percentages of time, resulting in the degradation of the quality and of the availability of communication services. Fade Mitigation Techniques must be used to counteract those severe propagation impairments.
In this thesis we explore the joint use of two of the most promising techniques, known as Reconfigurable Antenna and Adaptive Coding and Modulation, which up to now has been separately developed. Some of our accomplishments include, but are not limited to: a methodology to describe rain attenuation conditions for multiple users in large geographical areas, a tractable framework for the generation of correlated time se- ries of rain attenuation for multiple receiving stations, the comparison of performance between Fixed antenna system and Reconfigurable antenna system coupled with Adaptive Coding and Modulation.DIPARTIMENTO DI ELETTRONICA, INFORMAZIONE E BIOINGEGNERIA25D'AMICO, MICHELEFIORINI, CARLO ETTOR
Algorithm for solving a linear exchange model with rationing
AbstractAn exchange model with fixed prices, linear utility functions and functions that construct the constraints of rationing is considered. A finite algorithm for finding a solution of the model is proposed
Application of Primak's method for the determination of activation energy spectrum in annealing processes after nuclear recoil in metal complexes
The Primak treatment has been applied to kinetic data on the annealing of chemical recoil damage in trisacetylacetone Co(III). A frequency factor of 4.5×1011 sec-1 and a spread of activation energies from 1.09 eV to 1.22 eV have been obtained
The starting point of the article is the understanding that one of the most important features of modern research finding is the emergence of interdisciplinary work. Prominent among the latter, in author’s opinion, take up works with the subject which is on the verge of sociology and philosophy of management, management of social work and quality. The relevance of the past defined the development of principles of service country in Ukraine, developing social services, the need to improve the performance of providers of the latter. The purpose of the publication is to analyze the types of organizational processes to ensure implementation of the mission socially work institution. It is emphasized that the product of socially work institution is service. Providing it is a consequence of the internal organizational processes. However, the author notes that this processes are complex associated and they make fuzzy line between formal and informal sectors routine workforce. However, this is the situation, in his opinion, regardless of the internal set of social norms and values can personalize responsibility and professional relationships without significantly reducing of the rationality goal. It is proved that in the daily life of the collective labor of any organization, including socially oriented people, we can distinguish two areas formal and informal. Describing the first area author emphasizes that within it are staff units, divisions or departments whose activities are coordinated and deliberately created by direction towards a common goal of instrumentally rational. In this area implemented behaviors and relationships that provided early and for legal reasons. The main feature of the formal sector, as defined in the article, is the presence of a coherent and general procedures specified individual units of the organization. Based on this, the author concludes that in the labor group of social institution in his inner life, the dynamics defined processes are not always directly related to the final product. As stated in the article, as they occur in the formal and informal sectors institution correlated with standard management functions and structure of the latter, as well as ensuring its integrity and social selfsufficiency. However, the main focus of the publication focuses on the processes of communication, decision making, implementation of power and influence, conflict management. In everyday these processes are not rigidly delineated by typical feature and create diversity of combinatorial forms. Research of the relationship of instrumentally rational and attractive qualities in them will determine not only the nature of the subculture employees socially oriented institution, but may be a prerequisite for the theoretical reproduction of social image of their professional competence.
