    California Poll: 9903 -- October 8-17, 1999

The Field Poll, established in 1945 as The California Poll by Mervin Field, has operated continuously as an independent, non-partisan, media-sponsored public opinion news service. Each year the Field Polls cover a wide range of political and social topics examining California public opinion. Continuing measures are made of voter support for leading political figures vying for major state and federal offices, job ratings of important political figures and reactions to signif icant political events. Voter awareness, understanding and predispositions of major campaign issues and salient statewide ballot propositions are also tracked over time. For poll 9903 N=1001

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

ITU-T G.9903 performance against Middleton Class-A impulsive noise

ITU-T G.9903 also known as G3-PLC is one of the transmission systems using the power line channel. Technologies using this medium are very interesting for power utilities as they can use their own infrastructure. One of the resulting challenge is that the power lines were not designed to carry data since the performance of a communication may vary depending on many parameters such as the different types of load, the location and the time of day. Moreover, every electrical devices are connected to the power distribution grid leading to various types of noise injection, especially impulsive noise. Finding an appropriate model for such a complex system is difficult, however, a commonly accepted model for powerline noise is Middleton's class A. It is a simple model (few parameters) and it takes into account both a background noise and an impulsive component. These features makes this model highly interesting for performance simulation in the context of PLC. This paper will study the performance limits of ITU-T G.9903 PHY impaired by impulsive noise using an ITU-T G.9903 PHY layer simulator. This simulator is capable to emulate every aspects of a hardware modem comprising the correction mechanisms, the frame structure and the modulations as defined in the ITU-T G9903 standard. This paper discusses the results obtained for several values of Middleton's class A noise in order to define boundaries of acceptable performance
