    background: Zinc oxide nanoparticles (Np-ZnO) have different behaviors which allows its application in various areas. Objectives: To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Zinc oxide nanoparticles for Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644. The study: Zinc oxide nanoparticles with an average size of 90nm and different concentrations of 4; 2; 1; 0,5; 0,25; 0,12; 0,06; 0,03; 0,01; 0,007 mg/mL prepared in aqueous solution were used. It was incubated at a time corresponding to generation time of the bacteria, evaluating the growth with the presence of turbidity. Findings: The MIC for Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 was 0,06 mg/mL. Conclusion: The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (Np-ZnO) with an average size of 90nm for Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 was 0,06 mg/mL, enough value to significantly control the growth of for Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644.Introducción: Las nanopartículas de óxido de zinc (Np-ZnO) presentan diferentes comportamientos; permitiendo su aplicación en diversas áreas. Objetivos: Determinar cuál es la concentración mínima inhibitoria de nanopartículas de óxido de zinc sobre el crecimiento de Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644. El estudio: Se utilizaron nanopartículas de ZnO con un tamaño promedio de 90 nm, a diferentes concentraciones de 4; 2; 1; 0,5; 0,25; 0,12; 0,06; 0,03; 0,01; 0,007 mg/mL de Np-ZnO, preparadas en solución acuosa. Se incubó en un tiempo correspondiente al de generación de la bacteria, evaluando el crecimiento con la aparición de turbidez. Hallazgos: Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644 presentó una CMI de 0,06 mg/mL. Conclusión: La concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) resultante para las nanopartículas de óxido de zinc (Np-ZnO) de 90 nm de tamaño promedio fue de 0,06 mg/mL, suficiente para controlar significativamente el crecimiento contra Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644

    Assessment on the Antimicrobial Activity of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SU-KC1a against Listeria monocytogenes ATCC-7644

    Lactobacillus species are particularly noteworthy due to their ability to synthesize a variety of antimicrobial substances, including organic acids and bacteriocins. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SU-KC1a, a member of the genus of Lactobacillus, had been previously isolated from human breast milk by our group. A preliminary in silico investigation had identified that Lpb. plantarum SU-KC1a possessed genes responsible for plantaricin, which is a type of bacteriocin produced by Lpb. plantarum strains. This study therefore aimed to assess the antibacterial activity of Lpb. plantarum SU-KC1a against pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes ATCC-7644 and to induce the biosynthesis of plantaricin by Lpb. plantarum SU-KC1a through co-culture with L. monocytogenes ATCC-7644 as the inducer strain. Our results showed that the cell-free supernatants from both co-culture and monoculture of Lpb. plantarum SU-KC1a exhibited a modest antibacterial activity against L. monocytogenes ATCC-7644. However, it was further determined that the inhibitory effect was not due to the production of plantaricin. Instead, it was primary attributed to the production of organic acids, which decreased the pH and inhibited the growth of L. monocytogenes ATCC-7644. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that Lpb. plantarum SU-KC1a could exert a modest antibacterial activity towards L. monocytogenes ATCC-7644, but not through the induction of plantaricin

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Temperature adaptation and plasmid transformation in Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 7644

    As a recently recognized food-borne pathogen, L. monocytogenes has caused great concerns in food industry due to its ability to survive and grow in many refrigerated foods. The first part of this thesis research was to examine the ability of L. monocytogenes to adapt to changing environmental temperature, and the second part was to develop a suitable plasmid transformation system using electroporation.It was found that L. monocytogenes ATCC 7644 had a temperature profile of growth with a break point of 15\sp\circC. Energetically, it was considerably more difficult for L. monocytogenes to grow at temperatures below 15\sp\circC than above. Both superoxide dismutase and catalase, however, showed greater specific activities when cultures were adapted at 5\sp\circC than at 37\sp\circC at all assay temperatures. This may suggest the L. monocytogenes grown at lower temperatures might be more likely to survive phagocytosis and be a more able pathogen.In the second part of this research, it was discovered that L. monocytogenes ATCC 7644 had a natural cryptic plasmid of 20 to 21 md, designated as pMW 01. AFter electroporating with plasmid pAMβ\beta1, three Em\sp{\rm r} Listeria derivatives--T-1, T-2 and T-3, were categorized and characterized. In comparison to the parental strain, these three Em\sp{\rm r} derivatives were morphologically, biochemically and genetically different. Due to the high frequency of appearance, they were not likely to be the results of spontaneous or electroporation induced mutations. All three Em\sp{\rm r} derivatives lost their native pMW 01 plasmid, both T-1 and T-2 contain two new plasmids--pMW 11 (5.4 md), pMW 12 (16 md) in T-1, and pMW 21 (2.8 md), pMW 22 (15 md) in T-2. More interestingly, homology between pAMβ\beta1 or pMW 01 and the four new species of plasmids could not be demonstrated by the Southern blot hybridization experiments.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
