    NGC 6251 at multiple scales and wavelengths

    We have studied the FRI radio galaxy NGC 6251 and its environment at several wavelengths and scale lengths. On the large scale, we have probed the gravity field by measuring the velocity dispersion of the cluster members associated with NGC 6251 and relating this to, the cluster's X-ray emission. On the small scale, the gravitational information is provided by cold HI near the nucleus and the distribution of stars and gas near the centre of the galaxy. The cold HI gas which we have measured explains the absorption of the central X-ray emission and is consistent with the extinction through the recently discovered HST gas disc of NGC 6251

    Low-frequency observations of the giant radio galaxy NGC 6251

    We present LOFAR observations at 150 MHz of the borderline FRI/FRII giant radio galaxy NGC 6251. This paper presents the most sensitive and highest resolution images of NGC 6251 at these frequencies to date, revealing for the first time a low-surface-brightness extension to the northern lobe, and a possible backflow associated with the southern lobe. The integrated spectra of components of NGC 6251 are consistent with previous measurements at higher frequencies, similar to results from other LOFAR studies of nearby radio galaxies. We find the outer structures of NGC 6251 to be either at equipartition or slightly electron dominated, similar to those of FRII sources rather than FRIs, but this conclusion remains tentative because of uncertainties associated with the geometry and the extrapolation of X-ray measurements to determine the external pressure distribution on the scale of the outer lobes. We place lower limits on the ages of the extension of the northern lobe and the backflow of the southern lobe of t ≳ 250 Myr and t ≳ 210 Myr, respectively. We present the first detection of polarization at 150 MHz in NGC 6251. Taking advantage of the high Faraday resolution of LOFAR, we place an upper limit on the magnetic field in the group of B &lt; 0.2 (∧ B/10 kpc) −0.5 μG for a coherence scale of ∧ B &lt; 60 kpc and B &lt; 13 μG for∧ B = 240 kpc. </p

    The environment and dynamics of the radio galaxy NGC 6251

    This thesis is primarily a case study of the low-power radio galaxy NGC 6251. New radio (VLA), optical imaging (KPNO), optical spectroscopy (MMTO) and X-ray (Chandra) data are complemented with existing HST, ROSAT and ASCA results to give a comprehensive multi-wavelength overview of this spectacular source on different size scales. On the large scale, the gravity field is probed by measuring the velocity dispersion of the cluster members associated with NGC 6251 and relating this to the cluster's X-ray emission. The cluster is found to be a poor one, and the X-ray-emitting gas confined within is consequently cool. Potential optical and X-ray jet detections are discussed, and spectral distributions of three jet knots are modeled. The results suggest that synchrotron radiation most convincingly explains the radio to X-ray spectrum. The issue of the dynamics of the host galaxy and their relation to the radio structure is briefly discussed, but proves largely inconclusive, due to observational limitations. To probe the inner regions of NGC 6251, L-band spectral line radio observations are analysed, and show 21 cm neutral hydrogen absorption against the continuum of the galactic core. The HI spectrum shows a rare double-peaked absorption profile straddling the systemic velocity of the galaxy, suggesting the existence of both infalling and outflowing components. It is shown that the amount of infalling gas is more than enough to fuel the central engine of the AGN by accretion. Two models are proposed to account for the outflow, including an outflowing 'wind' that explains both the HI absorption component and the blue-shifted optical-line-emitting gas. The technique of using optical spectroscopic observations to probe cluster environments is also applied to the low-power radio galaxy NGC 326. The measured velocity dispersion is found to be consistent with the X-ray temperature of the cluster dominated by NGC 326.     Group galaxies around giant radio galaxy NGC 6251

    We have investigated galaxies around NGC 6251 to search for an associated group. Our main goal is to study the environment around the giant radio galaxy to better understand the reasons for its size and structure. To this end, we have made spectroscopic observations with the 2.16-m optical telescope at Xinglong Station of the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) and obtained spectra of 45 objects (including four likely stars). The redshifts give us 10 new galaxies in a group, which are in addition to seven previously known members. The 17 galaxies' positions are compared with the radio emission. The optical velocity dispersion of group members within 0.7 Mpc of NGC 6251 is not consistent with that expected from correlation curves of X-ray luminosity Lx versus velocity dispersion σr. We briefly discuss this result, suggesting that in the NGC 6251 group, the density of X-ray emitting gas is unusually low, and this is the main reason for the size of the radio source

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
