    Analytical studies of the behaviour of semi-rigid non-sway frames with tubular columns.

    This thesis reports the research investigation on the behaviour of non-sway frames with SHS columns taking into consideration the influence of semi-rigid flowdrill connections. The aim of the studies was to investigate the behaviour of the non-sway frames in the elastic and inelastic ranges, the acceptability of the flowdrill connections for low-rise non-sway frames and to develop a simplified semi-rigid design that is suitable for daily design routine. The analytical studies were conducted using an existing finite element program which was modified to work with frames employing tubular columns. The program is able to simulate the response in the elastic and inelastic ranges taking into account the semi-rigid connections, the geometrical and material nonlinearities and the development of spread yield. The program has been validated against the experimental results and can reasonably predict the true frame behaviour. The results of the parametric studies show several important observations;one of which is the phenomenon of moment shedding. This phenomenon causes the relaxation of the detrimental moment at the column top end which in turn causes the moment redistribution to the neighbouring members. Eventually, the detrimental column moment diminishes and sometimes acts as restraining moments. As a consequence, at ultimate load, the columns behave in the general form of axially loaded compression members and the beams as simply supported with a certain degree of end restraint. Knowing that restrained beam-columns can be treated as axially loaded, extensive parametric studies on different frame configurations were conducted to determine the ultimate strength of beam-columns. The studies were conducted on low rise multi-storey non-sway frames. The principal parameters varied are the column slenderness, connection types and the magnitude of beam loads. The values of ultimate strength of restrained beam-columns are compared directly against the strength of pin ended columns as specified by the BS 5950 and EC3 codes. The results show that in many cases, the ultimate strength of restrained beam-columns are in excess to the strength of axially loaded pin ended column as specified by BS 5950 and EC3. Based on the results of the parametric studies, a simplified design for simple, semi-rigid and rigid frames is developed. The columns are designed as axially loaded compression members without any consideration of eccentricity or partial fixity moments. The beams for simple construction are designed as simply supported with pin ends; whereas, the beams for semi-rigid and rigid construction are designed as simply supported with a certain amount of end restraint moment to take into account the effect of semi-rigid and rigid connections. The design of strength for beams and columns can be carried out individually and is not dependent on the stiffnesses of the M-0 of the connections, beams and columns. Finally, general conclusions and recommendations for further work are also included

    Comparison Between Bs 5950 And Eurocode 3 For The Design Of Pre-Engineered Steel Structure Of A Factory

    The aim of this project dissertation is to design selected pre-engineered steel structural members including rafter and column with non-typical section by using two different design standards which are British Standard 5950 (BS 5950-1-1: 2000 “Code of Practice for Design – Rolled and Welded sections”) and Eurocode 3 (MS EN 1993-1-1: 2010 “General rules and rules for buildings”. The advantages and disadvantages of design using Eurocode 3 including cost effectiveness of the design compared with BS 5950 are determined in this project dissertation. The findings show that design using Eurocode 3 experienced lower structural performance in initial analysis but higher in final analysis compared to design using BS 5950 for critical combination. The structural capacities of Eurocode 3 design including shear capacity, axial capacity and moment capacity for the section used in this analysis are higher than BS 5950 design. Although the stable length for haunch in Eurocode 3 design is longer than BS 5950 design, the structural stability of Eurocode 3 design including the resistance of lateral torsional buckling and resistance of buckling due to interaction of axial and bending moment are lower compared to BS 5950 design. Lastly, Eurocode 3 design consumes 0.88% more still weight than BS 5950 design. This is because larger section sizes are required for Eurocode 3 to fulfill all requirements. Therefore, it can be concluded that BS 5950 design is cheaper than Eurocode 3 design

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Comparison between BS 5950: Part 1: 2000 and Eurocode 3 for design the restrained structural steel beam

    Access is limited to UniMAP community.This study is conducted to design and analysis the simply supported restrained steel beam by using Eurocode 3 (EC3) and BS 5950: Part 1: 2000 for comparing purposes. A simple program of Microsoft Excel 2007 was developed to execute an analysis for the steel beam design and compared it with manual calculation. Additionally, few parameters such as different loading types, beam lengths and steel grades (S275 and S355) were used to observe their influences in design. Besides, steel beam which designated by using both standards are compared in term of structural capacities and deflection. From the results acquired, it shows that design based on EC3 and BS 5950 is generally same. It’s also found that as the loadings and beam lengths increases, the shear capacity and moment capacity also increases. Meanwhile, the design based on BS 5950 required greater size of beam compare to EC3. Therefore, it can be stipulated that EC3 provide more conservative and economical design compare to BS 5950. Moreover, the actual and allowable deflection in EC3 is more desirable than BS 5950. In order to improve this project, further study can be made for other steel’s structural element by using different software

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The use of steel in building construction industry varies from country across the Asian region. In Malaysia, rapid development in building construction industry has stimulated all professionals and construction developers to recognise its strength and weakness and, even more importantly, its 'customers' needs, and hence to design the buildings in line with this recognition. This final year project paper was to compare in structural steelwork design by using different code of practice between Eurocode (EC3) and British Standard (BS 5950: Part 1). It was focused on simply-supported steel beam design and steel column design; by using universal beam, UB and universai column, UC. Computer packages on these design were developed. In Malaysia, BS 5950: Part 1 is very familiai for civil engineers, but Eurocode3 (EC3) is a new code of practice. Beyond 1999, all of the European countries will be using the Eurocode as a code of practice instead British Standard. Consequently, Malaysia also might be using Eurocode as its references for structural steelwork design. Hence, this project can give guidelines in the changes and differences between BS 5950: Part 1 and EC3
