The relation between 5780 and 5797 diffuse interstellar bands, CH/CH

    No full text
Correlations between column densities of neutral and molecular hydrogen and strengths of major 5780 and 5797 Å diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) based on spectra of 66 OB stars were analyzed. We confirm that the 5797 Å DIB is more tightly correlated with column density of molecular hydrogen while the 5780 DIB – with that of atomic hydrogen. This leads to a reasonably tight relation between the molecular fraction of H2 and equivalent width ratio of the 5797 and 5780 major diffuse bands with correlation coefficient equal to 0.77 ± 0.05. Column densities of CH and CH+ molecules were used to analyze correlations between abundances of CH/CH+ molecules and strengths of the major 5780 and 5797 DIBs. The 5780 DIB is better correlated with the column density of methydyline cation than the 5797 DIB. A relation with correlation coefficient equal to 0.95 ± 0.02 based on precise column densities, between column densities of CH and H2 molecules, is also presented; in other words, the column densitiy ratio in the case of H2 and CH molecules in the ISM is equal to (2.01 ± 0.09) × 107

Phenotypic variability of RP1-related inherited retinal dystrophy associated with the c.5797 C > T (p.Arg1933*) variant in the Japanese population

Abstract The phenotypes of RP1-related inherited retinal dystrophies (RP1-IRD), causing autosomal dominant (AD) and autosomal recessive (AR) diseases, vary depending on specific RP1 variants. A common nonsense mutation near the C-terminus, c.5797 C > T (p.Arg1933*), is associated with RP1-IRD, but the exact role of this mutation in genotype-phenotype correlation remains unclear. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed patients with RP1-IRD (N = 42) from a single center in Japan. AR RP1-IRD patients with the c.5797 C > T mutation (N = 14) mostly displayed macular dystrophy but rarely retinitis pigmentosa or cone-rod dystrophy. Conversely, AR RP1-IRD patients without the c.5797 C > T mutation, including those with other pathogenic RP1 variants, were mostly diagnosed with severe retinitis pigmentosa. Full-field electroretinograms were significantly better in patients homozygous or compound heterozygous for the c.5797 C > T mutation than in those without this mutation, corresponding to their milder phenotypes. Clinical tests also revealed a slower onset of age and a better mean deviation value with the static visual field in AR RP1-IRD patients with the c.5797 C > T mutation compared to those without. Therefore, the presence of c.5797 C > T may partly account for the phenotypic variety of RP1-IRD and may yield milder phenotypes. These findings may be useful for predicting the prognosis of RP1-IRD patients

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The relation between CH and CN molecules and carriers of 5780 and 5797 diffuse interstellar bands

    No full text
Optical absorption bands of the interstellar CN (near 3875 Å) and CH molecules (the violet and blue ones near 4300 and 3886 Å, respectively) were applied to determine the column densities of these two radicals in a statistically meaningful sample of 84 reddened OB stars. Equivalent widths of the major 5780 and 5797 diffuse bands (DIBs) were measured along the lines of sight toward the same stars in spectra acquired using four echelle spectrographs situated in both the northern and southern hemispheres. The mutual relation between abundances of CH and CN molecules shows a large scatter; and especially the CN molecule abundance varies strongly from cloud to cloud. The carriers of the major 5780 and 5797 DIBs seem to be spatially correlated with column densities of CH rather than of the CN molecule. This is most likely true in the case of a narrower feature: the 5797 DIB correlates with CH column density better than 5780 does. The correlations do suggest that the DIB carriers are likely hydrocarbons. They apparently occupy molecular clouds since the H2 abundance is closely related to that of methylidyne (CH), as has already been demonstrated

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
