    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Mast cells are significantly increased and activated in psoriatic lesions and are involved in psoriatic inflammation. Some endogenous substances can interact with the surface receptors of mast cells and initiate the release of downstream cytokines that participate in inflammatory reactions. Neuroblast differentiation-associated protein (AHNAK) is mainly expressed in the skin, esophagus, kidney, and other organs and participates in various biological processes in the human body. AHNAK and its derived peptides have been reported to be involved in the activation of mast cells and other immune processes. This study aimed to investigate whether AHNAK (5758–5775), a neuroblast differentiation-associated protein-derived polypeptide, could be considered a new endogenous substance in psoriasis patients, which activates mast cells and induces the skin inflammatory response contributing to psoriasis. Wild-type mice were treated with AHNAK(5758–5775) to observe the infiltration of inflammatory cells in the skin and cytokine release in vivo. The release of inflammatory mediators by mouse primary mast cells and the laboratory of allergic disease 2 (LAD2) human mast cells was measured in vitro. Molecular docking analysis, molecular dynamics simulation, and siRNA transfection were used to identify the receptor of AHNAK(5758–5775). AHNAK(5758–5775) could cause skin inflammation and cytokine release in wild-type mice and activated mast cells in vitro. Moreover, suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) might be a key receptor mediating AHNAK(5758–5775)’s effect on mast cells and cytokine release. We propose a novel polypeptide, AHNAK(5758–5775), which induces an inflammatory reaction and participates in the occurrence and development of psoriasis by activating mast cells.</p

    The large scale magnetic field structure of the spiral galaxy NGC 5775

    Context. The origin of large-scale magnetic fields in spiral galaxies is still a theoretical riddle and better observational constraints are required to make further progress. Aims. In order to better determine the large-scale 3D-structure of magnetic fields in spiral galaxies we present a Faraday rotation analysis of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5775. Methods. Deep radio-continuum observations in total power and linear polarization were performed at 8.46 GHz with the VLA and the 100-m Effelsberg telescope. They were analyzed together with archival 4.86 and 1.49 GHz VLA-data. We thus can derive rotation measures from a comparison of three frequencies and determine the intrinsic magnetic field structure. Results. A very extended halo is detected in NGC 5775, with magnetic field lines forming an X-shaped structure. Close to the galactic disk the magnetic field is plane-parallel. The scaleheights of the radio emission esimated for NGC 5775 are comaprable with other galaxies. The rotation measure distribution varies smoothly on both sides along the major axis from positive to negative values. Conclusions. From the derived distribution of rotation measures and the plane-parallel intrinsic magnetic field orientation along the galactic midplane we conclude that NGC 5775 has an even axisymmetric large-scale magnetic field configuration in the disk as generated by an αΩ-dynamo which is accompanied by a quadrupolar poloidal field. The magnetic field lines of the plane-parallel component are pointing outwards. The observed X-shaped halo magnetic field, however, cannot be explained by the action of the disk’s mean-field dynamo alone. It is probably due to the influence of the galactic wind together with the dynamo action

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
