La tecnica del "Reverberation mapping" è l'unico metodo diretto in grado di misurare la massa dei buchi neri nelle galassie lontane. Il progetto AGN STORM si propone di verificare la validità e l'accuratezza delle misure ottenute con tale tecnica per NGC 5548. Nel corso del lavoro di tesi è stata analizzata una parte dei dati spettroscopici ottenuti con il telescopio Galileo dell'osservatorio astrofisico di Asiago.ope

Probing the physical properties of the NGC 5548 broad line region using balmer lines
We investigate the physical characteristics of the Broad Line Region (BLR) of NGC 5548 using the Boltzmann plot (BP) method, that we applied on the Balmer lines observed from 1996 to 2004. We find that variability earlier detected in the lines, is also present in the temperature parameter A, obtained from the BP method. Using the BP temperature parameter A to calculate temperature, we find that the average temperature for the considered period was T≈10000 K, and that varies from 5000 K (in 2002) to 15000 K (in 1998). This variation correlates with the AGN-component of the optical continuum flux (r = 0.85) and may indicate the existence of an accretion disc in the BLR of NGC 5548

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
An Eight-Year Photometric Study of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 5548 **
We present multi-wavelength continuum light curves spanning the period 2012 to 2020 for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. CCD observations in the B, V, R, and I photometric bands (using Johnson/Cousins or Bessel filters) were made with the telescopes operated by the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) in Arizona, in Chile, and on the island of La Palma. Our observations show that NGC 5548 brightened by one-half to one magnitude (depending upon the filter) during the period 2012 to 2014, followed by a three-year period of dimming. During 2019 the galaxy exhibited a period of rapid brightening. The data show a correlation between brightness (V) and color (V-I), though with significant scatter. These observations will contribute to ongoing reverberation mapping studies of NGC 5548, with the goal of determining the mass of its central back hole (estimated at 5.3±1.7×107 solar masses) and the geometry of the surrounding gaseous regions
