Restoration-USU/WATS-5340-5350: v5.0
The WATS 5340-5350 Capstone Class Series for Management & Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems was first taught in academic year 2017-2018 (version 1). This is the first time (2021-2022) that I packaged a release for the course, and is it is the fifth version of the course, I will call it version 5. It consists solely of the GitHub hosted markdown/jekyll web site, which other instructors are free to fork and host on their own repositories (and modify for your purposes), or other instructors or students can re-use any of the teaching materials here (subject to the Creative Commons Attribution licenses).
Please note that WATS 5340 & 5350 were co-taught by Peter Wilcock and Joe Wheaton until 2019-2020 (version 3), and after that Peter taught WATS 5340 (Fall 2021, Fall 2022) and Joe taught WATS 5350 (Spring 2021, Spring 2022). As such, the 5340 pages are out of date from the content that Peter taught. This release represents WATS 5340 as of Fall 2020 and 5350 as of Spring 2022.
Steve Bennett will teach 5350 in Spring 2023, and Joe will teach it again in Spring 2024
Celestial position of the companion of PSR J1740-5340
We present optical astrometry of archival ground and space based imaging of the companion to PSR J1740-5340. The optical position of the companion is significantly offset from the timing position of the pulsar. We briefly investigate the effects of this inconsistency on other timing parameters and compare our position with an improved position of PSR J1740-5340 from recent, preliminary, timing results

The complex H alpha line profile of the bright companion to PSR J1740-5340 in NGC 6397
We present a detailed study of the Ha and He I spectral features of COM J1740-5340 ( the companion to PSR J1740-5340 in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397), exploiting a series of high-resolution spectra obtained at different orbital phases. The Ha absorption line shows a complex two-component structure, revealing that optically thin hydrogen gas resides outside the Roche lobe of COM J1740-5340. The line morphology precludes the existence of any residual disk around the millisecond pulsar and suggests the presence of a stream of material going from the companion toward the neutron star. This material never reaches the neutron star surface, being driven back by the pulsar radiation far beyond COM J1740-5340. By analyzing the He I absorption lines as a function of orbital phase, we infer the presence of an overheated longitudinal strip (about 150 times narrower than it is long) on the COM J1740-5340 surface facing the radio pulsar

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
