Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Effect of polymer concentration on matrimid 5218 based-carbon membrane for H2 separation
Hydrogen (H2)-based economy development is expected to create extensive need for efficient collecting strategies of fairly high purity H2. The aim of a H2-selective membrane is to manipulate H2’s high diffusivity characteristics as well as to restrict the outcome of lower solubility. Carbon membranes offer high potential in gas separation industry due to its highly permeable and selective. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of carbonization parameter, i.e., polymer concentration on the gas separation properties. Matrimid 5218 was used as a precursor for carbon tubular membrane preparation to produce high quality of carbon membrane via carbonization process. The polymer solution was coated on the surface of tubular ceramic tubes using dip-coating method. Matrimid 5218-based carbon tubular membranes were fabricated and characterized in terms of its structural morphology, chemical structure, thermal stability, and gas permeation properties by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and pure gas permeation system, respectively. The polymer solution containing 15 wt% Matrimid 5218 shows the best formulation for the preparation of Matrimid 5218-based carbon tubular membrane. The highest H2/N2 selectivity of 401.08±2.56 was obtained for carbon membrane carbonized at 800oC with heating rate of 2oC/min
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Measuring the Global Research Environment: Information Science Challenges for the 21st Century
“What does the global research environment look like?” This paper presents a summary look at the results of efforts to
address this question using available indicators on global research production. It was surprising how little information is available, how difficult some of it is to access and how flawed the data are. The three most useful data sources were UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Research and Development data (1996-2002), the Institute of Scientific Information publications listings for January 1998 through March 2003, and the World of Learning 2002 reference volume. The data showed that it is difficult to easily get a good overview of the global research situation from existing sources. Furthermore, inequalities between countries in research capacity are marked and challenging. Information science offers strategies for responding to both of these challenges. In both cases improvements are likely if access to information can be facilitated and the process of integrating information from different sources can be simplified, allowing transformation into effective action. The global research environment thus serves as a case study for the focus of this paper – the exploration of information science responses to challenges in the management, exchange and implementation of knowledge globally
Effects of cross-linkers with different molecular weights in cross-linked Matrimid 5218 and test temperature on gas transport properties
The poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was introduced by the cross-linking method in the commercial Matrimid 5218. The two kinds of membranes were prepared from the Matrimid 5218 and the cross-linkers poly(propylene glycol) block poly(ethylene glycol) block poly(propylene glycol) diamine (PPG/PEG/PPGDA) with different molecular weights. The cross-linking reaction process was monitored by FrIR. The cross-linked Matrimid 5218 membranes display excellent CO(2) permeability and CO(2)/light gas selectivity. The effects of cross-linkers with different molecular weights on gel content, thermal properties and H(2), CO(2), N(2) and CH(4) gas transport properties were reported. The effect of temperature on gas transport properties was also reported, and the permeabilities of these materials as a function of temperature were compared with other gas membrane materials. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
