The jet–ISM interactions in IC 5063
International audienceThe interstellar medium of the radio galaxy IC 5063 is highly perturbed by an AGN jet expanding in the gaseous disc of the galaxy. We model this interaction with relativistic hydrodynamic simulations and multiphase initial conditions for the interstellar medium and compare the results with recent observations. As the jets flood through the intercloud channels of the disc, they ablate, accelerate, and disperse clouds to velocities exceeding 400 km s^−1. Clouds are also destroyed or displaced in bulk from the central regions of the galaxy. Our models with jet powers of 10^44 and 10^45 erg s^−1 are capable of reproducing many of the observed features in the position velocity diagram of IC 5063, and confirm the notion that the jet is responsible for the strongly perturbed gas dynamics seen in the ionized, neutral, and molecular gas phases. In our simulations, we also see strong venting of the jet plasma perpendicular to the disc, which entrains clumps and diffuse filaments into the halo of the galaxy. Our simulations are the first 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the jet and interstellar matter of IC 5063
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. A Strong Jet-Cloud Interaction in the Seyfert Galaxy IC 5063: VLBI Observations
We present 21 cm H I line and 13 cm continuum observations, obtained with the Australian Long Baseline Array, of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063. This object appears to be one of the best examples of Seyfert galaxies where shocks produced by the radio plasma jet influence both the radio and the near-infrared emission. The picture resulting from the new observations of IC 5063 confirms and completes the one derived from previous Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) lower resolution observations. A strong interaction between the radio plasma ejected from the nucleus and a molecular cloud of the interstellar medium (ISM) is occurring at the position of the western hot spot, about 0.6 kpc from the active nucleus. Because of this interaction, the gas is swept up, forming around the radio lobe a cocoon-like structure where the gas is moving at high speed. Because of this, part of the molecular gas is dissociated and becomes neutral or even ionized if the UV continuum produced by the shocks is hard and powerful enough. In the 21 cm H I line new data, we detect only part of the strong, blueshifted H I absorption that was previously observed with ATCA at lower resolution. In particular, the main component detected in the VLBI absorption profile corresponds to the most blueshifted component in the ATCA data, with a central velocity of 2786 km s-1 and therefore blueshifted ∼614 km s-1 with respect to the systemic velocity. Its peak optical depth is 5.4%. The corresponding column density of the detected absorption, for a spin temperature of 100 K, is NHI ∼ 1 × 1021 atoms cm-2. Most of the remaining blueshifted components detected in the ATCA H I absorption profile are now undetected, presumably because this absorption occurs against continuum emission that is resolved out in these high-resolution observations. The H I absorption properties observed in IC 5063 appear different from those observed in other Seyfert galaxies, where the H I absorption detected is attributed to undisturbed foreground gas associated with the large-scale galaxy disk. In the case of IC 5063, only a small fraction of the absorption can perhaps be due to this. The reason for this could be that the western jet in IC 5063 passes through a particularly rich ISM. Alternatively, because of the relatively strong radio flux produced by this strong interaction and the high spectral dynamic range of our observations, broad absorption lines of low optical depth as detected in IC 5063 may have remained undetected in other Seyfert galaxies that are typically much weaker radio emitters or for which existing data are of poorer quality
Estimations of the Magnetic Field Strength in the Torus of IC 5063 Using Near-Infrared Polarimetry
An optically and geometrically thick torus obscures the central engine of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from some lines of sight. From a magnetohydrodynamical framework, the torus can be considered to be a particular region of clouds surrounding the central engine where the clouds are dusty and optically thick. In this framework, the magnetic field plays an important role in the creation, morphology and evolution of the torus. If the dust grains within the clouds are assumed to be aligned by paramagnetic alignment, then the ratio of the intrinsic polarization and visual extinction, P(per cent)/Av, is a function of the magnetic field strength. To estimate the visual extinction through the torus and constrain the polarization mechanisms in the nucleus of the type 2 AGN, IC 5063, we developed a polarization model to fit both the total and polarized flux in a 1.2-arcsec (∼263 pc) aperture. The polarization model is consistent with the nuclear polarization observed at Kn (2.0–2.3 μm) being produced by dichroic absorption from aligned dust grains with a visual extinction through the torus of 48 ± 2 mag. We estimated the intrinsic polarization arising from dichroic absorption to be PdicKn=12.5±2.7 per cent. We consider the physical conditions and environment of the gas and dust for the torus of IC 5063. Then, through paramagnetic alignment, we estimate a magnetic field strength in the range of 12–128 mG in the near-infrared emitting regions of the torus of IC 5063. Alternatively, we estimate the magnetic field strength in the plane of the sky using the Chandrasekhar–Fermi method. The minimum magnetic field strength in the plane of the sky is estimated to be 13 and 41 mG depending of the conditions within the torus of IC 5063. These techniques afford the chance to make a survey of AGN, to investigate the effects of magnetic field strength on the torus, accretion and interaction to the host galaxy
