Effects of BRL-47672 on growth, beta 2-adrenoceptors, and adenylyl cyclase activation in female rats
The morpholine compound BRL-47672 has a chemical structure similar to that of clenbuterol and causes similar anabolic effects in rats but has no actions on beta 2-adrenoceptors in vitro. It has been argued therefore that beta 2-adrenoceptors do not mediate the anabolic effects of this family of compounds. In the present study BRL-47672 was shown to bind to rat beta 2-adrenoceptors with low affinity (dissociation constant 16 microM) relative to clenbuterol (48 nM) and to be a very weak activator of adenylyl cyclase activity in rat skeletal muscle membranes in vitro. In contrast, acute administration of the drug to anesthetized rats in vivo caused an increase in muscle adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate output, and chronic treatment of conscious rats for > 6 days caused a significant increase in weight gain (69%) accounted for by increased muscle growth. The anabolic effects of BRL-47672 were not counteracted by daily injections of the drug ICI-118551 (2 mg/day) but were prevented when the same beta 2-antagonist was administered in the diet (200 mg/kg feed, equivalent to 4.3 mg/day). The beta 1-adrenoceptor selective antagonist CGP-20712A fed in the diet (200 mg/kg feed) failed to attenuate the response to BRL-47672. These results support the conclusion that BRL-47672 has little direct action on beta 2-adrenoceptors but suggest that the compound is metabolized rapidly in vivo to a potent beta 2-agonist. Thus the stimulation of muscle growth by BRL-47672 is via beta 2-adrenoceptors, with no contribution to this response from beta 1- or beta 3-adrenoceptor activation.</jats:p

"In the Steiner tree problem, we are given as input a connected n-vertex graph with edge weights in {1,2,...,W}, and a subset of k terminal vertices. Our task is to compute a minimum-weight tree that contains all the terminals. We give an algorithm for this problem with running time O(7.97^k n^4 log W) using O(n^3 log nW log k) space. This is the first single-exponential time, polynomial-space FPT algorithm for the weighted Steiner tree problem."

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Reproducibility of blood flow and post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia as measured by venous occlusion plethysmography.

47672.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Venous occlusion plethysmography is commonly used as a tool to assess BF (blood flow) and VR (vascular resistance) at baseline and during PORH (post-occlusive reactive hyperaemia). However, little is known about the reproducibility of this method. The purpose of the present study was to investigate short- (hours) and medium (week)-term reproducibility of forearm, calf and thigh BF and VR at baseline and during PORH. Reproducibility was assessed by the CV (coefficient of variation). In eight subjects, baseline BF and VR of the forearm, calf and thigh were measured using venous occlusion plethysmography (50 mmHg). PORH and minimal VR were measured after 13 min of arterial occlusion (220 mmHg). Reproducibility of baseline forearm and calf BF was acceptable and in agreement with previous studies (CV, 12.9-21.2%). Short- and medium-term reproducibility of thigh BF was good (CV, 5.9% and 8.7% respectively). Baseline VR showed acceptable-to-good reproducibility for forearm, calf and thigh (8.3-22.5%). Forearm PORH showed a CV of 6.1% (short term) and 8.6% (medium term); this was 6.1% (short term) and 6.4% (medium term) for the calf and 6.4% (short term) and 8.0% (medium term) for the thigh. Minimal VR showed good-to-acceptable reproducibility (CV, 6.1-11.7%). In conclusion, forearm, calf and thigh BF and PORH measured by plethysmography have an acceptable-to-good short- and medium-term reproducibility. Short- and medium-term reproducibility of forearm and calf baseline BF are acceptable and thigh baseline BF has a good short- and medium-term reproducibility. Therefore plethysmography is a suitable low-cost tool to assess thigh baseline BF and PORH
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
