Co-propagation of maser emission at 1720 and 4765 MHz

    No full text
MERLIN observations are presented of OH 4765-MHz and OH 1720-MHz masers in the massive star-forming region W3(OH). Two of the three intense spots of maser emission at 4765 MHz are spatially coincident with two similar spots at 1720 MHz in both left-hand circular (LHC) and right-hand circular (RHC) polarizations, to an accuracy of 15 mas. The spots also overlap in velocity when allowance is made for Zeeman splitting of the 1720-MHz line. We conclude that we have found two examples of masers in different rotational levels of OH which are co-propagating through the same column of gas and experiencing competitive gain effects. The third 4765-MHz maser spot was found to have no overlapping counterpart amongst the 1720-MHz masers

Abstract 4765: The role of estrogen receptor signalling in serous ovarian cancer.

Abstract Epithelial ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous group of diseases with multiple histotypes which can be broadly divided into a dualistic model based on morphological, molecular genetic, and clinical features. The most common and aggressive of all EOC, accounting for 90% of deaths, is High Grade Serous Carcinoma (HGSC). It is characterized by a genetically unstable, rapidly growing phenotype, is diagnosed at advanced stage with poorly defined cancer precursors compared to the more indolent Low Grade Serous Carcinoma (LGSC). Reproductive hormone receptor status (estrogen/ progesterone receptor) may be an important indicator of response to anti-hormonal therapy in ovarian cancer. There have been few reports detailing the expression of ER in HGSC, LGSC and the normal fallopian tube epithelium, the likely cell of origin of both histotypes. We hypothesize that some ER mediated signaling is maintained despite the loss of progesterone receptor in HGSC compared to the LGSC. Methodology: Snap-frozen tissues (43 HGSC and 18 LGSC) were selected from the UHN Biobank. We used our previously published gene expression profiles to generate a candidate gene list, which was chosen based on the presence of known estrogen responsive elements. They were validated by qPCR and immunohistochemistry on HGSC and LGSC tissue microarrays. Human fallopian tube epithelial cell lines were treated with estradiol at 50nm to determine ‘normal’ ER response. An ER positive cancer cell line (SKOV3) was used to determine the cellular response to candidate genes. IHC was scored using automated image analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Fisher's Exact Test. Results: 35/43 (81%) of HGSC were ER+/PR- whilst 9/27 of LGSC were ER+/PR- and 18/27 ER+/PR+. Gene expression analysis of ER+ HGSC and ER- HGSC revealed 881 genes with more than a 2-FC in gene expression including 202 genes with known or putative estrogen responsive elements. They are involved in immune response, locomotion, metanephrous development and cellular adhesion. We compared genes that were differentially expressed between normal fallopian tube cells obtained during pre- or post-ovulation (93 genes). 42 ‘FTE-normal’ genes were differentially expressed between ER- versus ER+ HGSC. We selected 5 genes to validate by qPCR and IHC, based on gene ontology and known associations to cancer pathways. Conclusions: These results show that HGSC is predominantly an ER+/ PR- cancer (80%) while LGSC is predominantly an ER positive/ PR positive cancer (66%). Our data also indicate that some ER signalling is maintained in the absence of the progesterone receptor and ER+ HGSC are transcriptionally different from ER- HGSC although, there is no distinct clinical benefit between these two groups. ER is still able to transcriptionally activate a subset of known ER target genes and this information should provide further insight into the use of hormone receptors as indicators of anti-hormone therapy in ovarian cancer. This thesis, describes the reasons that gradually led the Public Administration to new methods of hiring Personnel in the Public sector, with the aim of adopting a meritocratic and not favoritism personnel selection system, which would overturn the established practices of customer relations through a depoliticized process. First an introduction to the Independent Authorities is made and the institutional role and responsibilities of the ASEP from its establishment until today are explored. Then, the personnel selection methods in the Greek Public Administration are mentioned, starting with a summary description of the hiring methods in Greece, from 1951 until today. There, the problems and pathologies of the system are identified, resulting in numerous amendments to the laws to improve the system and thus resulting in the necessity of reforming the recruitment system, with the passing of the new Law 4765/2021. Finally, the hiring methods of Law 4765/2021, and especially the Panhellenic written competition, are analyzed and evaluated In this work, the methodology of the bibliographic review from primary and secondary sources, as well as legislation, is applied. The aim is to evaluate the hiring methods of Law 4765/2021 and to assess whether the method of the Panhellenic written competition, as a single hiring method, maintains the basic principles of transparency, meritocracy, objectivity and improves quality and effectiveness of the human resources of the Greek Public Administration

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
