    The work described in this thesis is that of the candidate alone, except where otherwise acknowledged in the text. The observations of IC 4499 at the AAT were carried out by my supervisor Dr. Andrew A. Cole but the candidate was responsible for the reduction process and all subsequent analysis. The IC 4499 material in this thesis was published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronom- ical Society, volume 411, pages 1536 to 1546, March 2011, with the candidate as first author and with Dr. Cole as co-author contributing part of the discussion. MNRAS hold the copyright for that content, and access to the material should be sought from the journal. The remaining non published content of the thesis may be made available for loan and limited copying and communication in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968. The Monte Carlo Markov Chain program to estimate the velocity dispersion and mass in IC 4499 was scripted in R by Dr. Simon Wotherspoon. The candidate substantially adapted the code and methodology to the larger problem of estimation of LMC rotation model parameters. LMC target selection, field plate setup, sky-fibre, and guide star placement were all carried out by the candidate, Dr. Cole travelled to the AAT to assist with the final LMC observations. Reduction and analysis of the LMC data is that of the candidate alone. Dr. Cole performed a calibration check of the LMC metallicity results and Appendix D is entirely his work. Thanks to Dr. Cole for encouragement, discussions and assistance. Observations at the Mount Pleasant radio telescope supporting the JAXA Selene Moon mission resulted in a co-author credit in Radio Science, volume 45, number 2, April 2010. Travel support for observing was provided by the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The AAO was funded by the British and Australian governments.     Constraints on the formation of the globular cluster IC 4499 from multiwavelength photometry

    We present new multiband photometry for the Galactic globular cluster IC 4499 extending well past the main-sequence turn-off in the U, B, V, R, I and DDO51 bands. This photometry is used to determine that IC 4499 has an age of 12 +/- 1 Gyr and a cluster reddening of E(B - V) = 0.22 +/- 0.02. Hence, IC 4499 is coeval with the majority of Galactic globular clusters, in contrast to suggestions of a younger age. The density profile of the cluster is observed to not flatten out to at least r similar to 800 arcsec, implying that either the tidal radius of this cluster is larger than previously estimated, or that IC 4499 is surrounded by a halo. Unlike the situation in some other, more massive, globular clusters, no anomalous colour spreads in the ultraviolet are detected among the red giant branch stars. The small uncertainties in our photometry should allow the detection of such signatures apparently associated with variations of light elements within the cluster, suggesting that IC 4499 consists of a single stellar population.Peer reviewed: YesNRC publication: Ye

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    IC 4499 revised: Spectro-photometric evidence of small light-element variations

    It has been suggested that IC 4499 is one of the very few old globulars to not host multiple populations with light-element variations. To follow-up on this very interesting result, here we have made use of accurate HST photometry and FLAMES at VLT high-resolution spectroscopy to investigate in more detail the stellar population properties of this system. We find that the red giant branch of the cluster is clearly bimodal in near-UV-optical colour-magnitude diagrams, thus suggesting that IC 4499 is actually composed by two sub-populations of stars with different nitrogen abundances. This represents the first detection of multiple populations in IC 4499. Consistently, we also find that one star out of six is Na-rich to some extent, while we do not detect any evidence of intrinsic spread in both Mg and O. The number ratio between stars with normal and enriched nitrogen is in good agreement with the number ratio – mass trend observed in Galactic globular clusters. Also, as typically found in other systems, nitrogen rich stars are more centrally concentrated than normal stars, although this result cannot be considered conclusive because of the limited field of view covered by our observations (∼1rh). On the contrary, we observe that both the RGB UV colour spread, which is a proxy of N variations, and Na abundance variations, are significantly smaller than those observed in Milky Way globular clusters with mass and metallicity comparable to IC 4499. The modest N and Na spreads observed in this system can be tentatively connected to the fact that IC 4499 likely formed in a disrupted dwarf galaxy orbiting the Milky Way, as previously proposed based on its orbit
