Revealing the Double Nucleus of NGC 4490
NGC 4490/85 (UGC 7651/48) or Arp 269 is well known for being one of the closest interacting/merging galactic systems. NGC 4490 has a high star formation rate (SFR) and is surrounded by an enormous H i feature stretching about 60 kpc north and south of the optically visible galaxies. Both the driver for the high SFR in NGC 4490 and the formation mechanism of the H i structure are puzzling aspects of this system. We have used mid-infrared Spitzer data to show that NGC 4490 has a double nucleus morphology. One nucleus is visible in the optical, while the other is only visible at infrared and radio wavelengths. We find the optical nucleus and the potential infrared visible nucleus have similar sizes, masses, and luminosities. Both are comparable in mass and luminosity to other nuclei found in interacting galaxy pairs and much more massive and luminous compared with typical nonnuclear star-forming complexes. We examine possible origin scenarios for the infrared feature, and conclude that it is likely that NGC 4490 is itself a merger remnant, which is now interacting with NGC 4485. This earlier encounter provides both a possible driver for extended star formation in NGC 4490, and multiple pathways for the formation of the extended H i plume

X-ray and optical properties of ULXs in NGC 4490/4485
Turkish Physical Society 33rd International Physics Congress, TPS 2017 --6 September 2017 through 10 September 2017 -- --The X-ray and optical properties of seven ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) in the interacting galaxies NGC 4490/4485 were examined in this study. The XMM-Newton and Chandra archival data were used for X-ray analyses. To study the optical counterparts of ULXs, the Hubble Space Telescope, (HST) archival data were used. After the relative astrometric correction between the Chandra and HST images, bright optical counterpart candidates were found for three ULXs (X-4, X-6 and X-7). © 2018 Author(s)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Exploring the relationship between X-ray binaries and compact star clusters (I): NGC 4490 and NGC 4214
We conducted a study to investigate the relationship between X-ray binaries (XRBs) and compact star clusters in the nearby star-forming galaxies NGC 4490 and NGC 4214. By analysing archival data from Chandra, we identified a total of 32 XRBs with X-ray luminosities L-x > 10(36) erg s(-1) in both galaxies. Utilizing data from HST/WFC3/UVIS, we presented a new catalogue of 715 compact star clusters in NGC 4490 and identified 312 such clusters in NGC 4214. In the case of NGC 4490, 14 of the 17 XRBs are associated with clusters, whereas in NGC 4214 all 15 XRBs are connected to clusters within a radius of <200 pc. Furthermore, among the XRBs in NGC 4490, 12 out of the 17 have optical counterparts. Similarly, in NGC4214, 11 out of the 15 XRBs exhibit optical counterparts. We have evidence for a substantial population of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) associated with clusters, accounting for similar to 70 per cent and 40 per cent of the detected XRBs in NGC 4490 and NGC 4214, respectively. HMXBs are often found near young, less massive clusters, while low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are associated with older, more massive clusters in these galaxies. Intermediate-mass XRBs in NGC 4214, on the other hand, tend to be close to young clusters, suggesting that their formation mechanism is more similar to HMXBs than to LMXBs
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
