    HOE-39866 use in Chemical Fallow Systems

    Studies were conducted to determine the usefulness of HOE-39866 (HOE-00661) in chemical fallow systems on the Canadian prairies. HOE-39866 at 0.5 to 1.0 kg ai/ha controlled Russian thistle, kochia, green foxtail, wild oats, and wheat comparable to paraquat, glyphosate, and glyphosate plus the isopropylamine salt of 2,4-D. However, control of barley with HOE-39866 was unacceptable. HOE-39866 was compatible in tank mixtures with ammonium sulfate, paraquat, chlorsulfuron, and metsulfuron. Ammonium sulfate improved weed control when HOE-39866 was applied at 0.25 kg/ha but not at 0.75 kg/ha. Adding paraquat at 0.07 to 0.21 kg ai/ha to HOE-39866 improved control of grass species over HOE-39866 alone. Adding chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron to HOE-39866 provided greater initial control of certain species as well as residual control of many weeds. HOE-39866 alone or in conjunction with other herbicides is an alternative to the herbicides used in chemical fallow systems.</jats:p

    Bu tez çalışmasında, HD 39866 (A2 II) yıldızının TÜBİTAK Ulusal Gözlemevi’ndeki (TUG) 1.5 metrelik RTT150 teleskobuna bağlı Coude Eşel Tayfçekeri (CET) ile alınan tayfsal veri kullanılarak kimyasal bolluk analizi gerçekleştirildi. Yıldızın optik bölge tayflarının sürekliliklerinin belirlenmesi, tayf çizgilerinin ölçümü, çizgi tanıları, kimyasal element bolluk hesapları yapıldı. Çalışmanın sonuçları literatürde yer alan bazı çalışmaların sonuçlarıyla karşılaştırıldı. Bu çalışma, RTT150 CET verileri kullanılarak yıldızların fotosferik bolluk analizleri üzerine yapılan bir çalışmadır.Kullanılan tayflar, optik bölgenin ll3920-8770Å dalgaboyu aralığını içeren eşel tayflardır. Tayflar, REDUCE ve VLINE (Hill et al. 1982a,b) programları kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. Yıldızın dönme hızı (v sin i), VLINE programının “fix parameter mode” özelliği kullanılarak birçok metal çizgisine Gauss fiti yapılarak 9.2 ± 0.5 km sn-1 olarak belirlendi. Her çizgi profilinin merkezi dalgaboyu, eşdeğer genişliği, çizgi derinliği ve yarı maksimumdaki tam genişliği bulundu. Çizgi tanı yöntemiyle HD 39866’nın atmosferindeki atom ve iyonlar tanımlandı. HD 39866 yıldızının tayfında, Paschen serisi çizgiler, Ha, Hb, Hg, Hδ, Hε, C I, C II, N I, O I, He I, Mg I, Mg II, Al I, Al II, Si II, S I, S II, Ca I, Ca II, Sc II, Ti II, V II, Cr I, Cr II, Mn I, Mn II, Fe I, Fe II, Ni II, Sr II, Zr II, Co II, Y II, Ba II, Gd II, Sm II, Ce II ve Nd II çizgileri tanımlandı. La II, N II ve Fe III’e ait bazı çizgiler varlığı muhtemel olan çizgiler olarak tanımlanmıştır. Bu çizgi tanı listesi, HD 39866 yıldızının ilk çizgi tanı listesidir. Tanılar, HD 39866 ve benzer tür yıldızlara kaynak oluşturacak niteliktedir.Atmosfer analizi, yerel termodinamik denge varsayımlı model atmosfer kodu ATLAS9 (Kurucz 1995) kullanılarak gerçekleştirildi. Yıldızın etkin sıcaklık ve yüzey çekim ivmesi, nötr ve bir kere iyonize olmuş demir çizgilerinin iyonizasyon dengesinden yararlanılarak Te = 8950 K ve log g = 2.40 olarak bulundu. Mikrotürbülans hızı, 2.6 km sn-1 olarak elde edildi. HD 39866 yıldızı için He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd, Gd elemetlerinin bollukları belirlendi. Analiz sonuçları, HD 39866’nın atmosferindeki helyum bolluğunun Güneş değerleriyle karşılaştırıldığında biraz fakir, azot miktarının ise oldukça bol olduğunu gösterir. Analizlerden elde edilen CNO’daki yüzey bolluk değişimleri, yıldızın evrimi esnasında bir karışım sürecine maruz kalmış olabileceğini gösterir. Yıldızın Te ve log g değerleri, yıldızı, 5 ile 9 M¤ kütleli yıldızların teorik evrim yolları arasına koymaktadır. HD 39866 yıldızı için Al, Sr dışındaki diğer element bollukları, genelde Güneş’teki değerlere yakın ya da Güneş’ten daha boldur. HD 39866, nadir toprak element bollukları bakımından Güneş’e göre oldukça farklıdır. Bu yıldızda Güneş’e göre daha bol bulunmaktadır. Böyle ayrıntılı tayfsal ve kimyasal analizler, HD 39866 için ilk kez yapılmaktadır. II ışınım sınıfına ait HD 39866 yıldızı, A tayf türünden Ib ve III ışınım sınıfları arasındaki bağlantıyı sağlar. Bu analiz, Kutluay Yüce’nin doktora tez çalışması (4 Lac:B9 Iab, n Cep:A2 Ia; 2003), Tolgahan Kılıçoğlu’nun yüksek lisans tez çalışması (20 CVn: F2 III; 2008), Canan Şahin’in dönem sonu projesi (HD 43836:B9 II; 2008) ve Saul J. Adelman ve arkadaşlarının “Elemental abundances from DAO spectrograms” (bkz. iki F süperdevi nu Her ve 41 Cyg; Adelman et al. 2008) çalışmalarına benzer bir şekilde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yüksek çözünürlüklü TUG tayfsal verisi ve son ölçüm teknikleri kullanılarak, seçilmiş model atmosferlerden elde edilen anlamlı bolluk değerleri,Venn (1995a, b)’in kullandığı benzer teknikler ve bu tekniklerin TUG verisine uygulanabilir olması bu tekniklerin başarısını gösterir.Abstract In this thesis, the detailed chemical abundances analysis of HD 39866 (A2 II) was performed using the spectra obtained with Coude Echelle Spectrograph of the 1.5-m RTT150 telescope at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (Antalya, TÜRKİYE). I done the techniques of continuum determination of the optical spectral region, spectral line measurements, line identifications, chemical element abundance calculations, and discuss with those of the literature. This work is the first thesis on the detailed photospheric abundance analyses using the RTT150 CES. The spectra are covering ll3920-8770Å of the optical spectral region from echelle spectra. The spectra were measured using programs REDUCE and VLINE (Hill et al. 1982). The projected rotational velocity (v sin i) was derived as 9.2 ± 0.5 km s-1 from the Gaussian fitting of several metal lines using the fix parameter mode of the program VLINE . I found for each line, its stellar wavelength (Å), equivalent width (mÅ), line depth, and line width (Å). With the line identification method, we found the atoms and ions in the atmosphere of HD 39866. We identified the lines of the Paschen series, Ha, Hb, Hg, Hδ, Hε, C I, C II, N I, O I, He I, Mg I, Mg II, Al I, Al II, Si II, S I, S II, Ca I, Ca II, Sc II, Ti II, V II, Cr I, Cr II, Mn I, Mn II, Fe I, Fe II, Ni II, Sr II, Zr II, Co II, Y II, Ba II, Gd II, Sm II, Ce II and Nd II in the spectrum of HD 39866. Some lines belonging to La II, N II, and Fe III are identified as possibly present in the spectrum of HD 39866. The list is the first for HD 39866. Thus the line identification should be useful for the spectral studies of HD 39866 and similar type stars. The atmosphere analysis was performed using the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) model atmospheres code ATLAS9 and its associated programs of Dr. Robert L. Kurucz (Kurucz 1995). The effective temperature and surface gravity were found from the ionization equilibria of iron from neutral and singly-ionized lines: The adopted values of HD 39866 are Te = 8950 K and log g = 2.40. The microturbulent velocity was calculated to be 2.6 km s-1. The abundance of He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd, Gd were calculated for HD 39866. The results of the abundance analysis show that HD 39866's helium abundance are slightly underabundant to solar values, extremely enhanced in nitrogen. There may be a mixing in HD 39866 that causes the surface abundance variations in CNO during the evolution of star. The Te and log g values put the star between the theoretical evolutionary path of 5-9 M¤ star. For HD 39866 the other element abundances are generally solar and overabundant except Al, Sr. HD 39866 is a extremely enhanced in the rare earths respect to solar. The detailed spectral and chemical analysis is the first for HD 39866. The star HD 39866 with the luminosity class II is better connect the A III stars with the A Ib stars. The analysis is performed in a manner similar to that of Kutluay Yüce’s PhD thesis (4 Lac:B9 Iab, n Cep:A2 Ia; 2003), Tolgahan Kılıçoğlu’s MSc thesis (20 CVn:F2 III; 2008), R. Canan Şahin’s work (HD 43836:B9 II; 2008) and the papers ofSaul J. Adelman and associates series “Elemental abundances from DAO spectrograms” (e.g., their studies of two F supergiants nu Her and 41 Cyg (Adelman et al. 2007). The reliable photospheric abundances which derived from the selected model atmosphere using high resolution TUG spectral data and state of the art measurement techniques indicates the success of the techniques used which are similar to those of Venn (1995a, b) and their applicability to TUG data

    Mode of Action Investigations with the Herbicides HOE-39866 and SC-0224

    In laboratory experiments, the effects of the herbicides HOE-39866 [ammonium (3-amino-3-carboxypropyl)-methylphosphinate] and SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate) on the incorporation of NaH14CO3, [14C]-leucine, [14C]-uracil, and [14C]-acetate into enzymatically isolated soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr. ‘Essex’] cells were evaluated to assess the activity of these herbicides on CO2fixation, protein, ribonucleic acid (RNA), and lipid syntheses. At low concentrations neither compound exhibited rapid or distinct inhibitions of any process as might be expected in the case of inhibition of a primary target site. Photosynthesis was the process least affected. At equimolar concentrations, protein and RNA syntheses were more sensitive to HOE-39866 than to SC-0224 while the reverse occurred in lipid synthesis. Protein synthesis appears to be a possible target site that may be involved in the herbicidal action of these two compounds.</jats:p

    Comparisons of HOE-39866, SC-0224, Paraquat, and Glyphosate in No-Till Corn (<i>Zea mays</i>)

    Field studies were conducted for 4 yr with HOE-39866 [ammonium-(3-amino-3-carboxypropyl)-methylphosphinate] and for 2 yr with SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate) to compare foliar activities with those of paraquat (1,1’-dimethyl-4,4’-bipyridinium ion) and glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] in no-till corn (Zea maysL. ‘Pioneer 3320’ in 1981 and ‘Pioneer 3184’ in 1982 and 1983). Rates evaluated were 0.6 to 1.7 kg ai/ha for all herbicides except paraquat which was included at 0.3 and 0.6 kg ai/ha. Control of rye (Secale cerealeL.) was excellent at all rates with SC-0224, paraquat, and glyphosate, but HOE-39866 was effective only when combined with residual herbicides. All four herbicides provided good initial control of horseweed [Conyza canadensis(L.) Cronq., ♯ ERICA], but recovery following paraquat application was extensive. Combinations of HOE-39866, SC-0224, and glyphosate at 0.6 kg/ha with atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] at 1.1 to 1.7 kg ai/ha + metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] at 1.7 kg ai/ha produced antagonistic responses against rye and sometimes horseweed. In 1983, the combination of SC-0224 + residual herbicides provided significantly better control of rye and horseweed 8 days after treatment than the combination of glyphosate + residual herbicides.</jats:p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
