Section 377: whose concerns does the judgment address?

    No full text
The Supreme Court’s recent judgment reading down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is a landmark on many counts. But while we celebrate the judgment, it is important to remember that Section 377 meant different things to different groups of queer people. While for some it was the symbolic harm of their desire being designated as “unnatural,” for others it had a material significance in their everyday negotiations with harassment and violence in public spaces

Self-Regeneration of Stereocenters:  A Practical Enantiospecific Synthesis of LFA-1 Antagonist BIRT-377

    No full text
An efficient enantiospecific synthesis of the LFA-1 antagonist BIRT-377 has been achieved in 43% overall yield in eight steps. The key transformations involve the stereospecific formation of the trans imidazolidinone 7, subsequent alkylation, and the efficient hydrolysis of disubstituted imidazolidinone 9. The process is practical, robust, and cost-effective; it has been successfully implemented in the pilot plant to produce multikilogram quantities of the drug BIRT-377 (1)

Analysing Section 377 Of The Indian Penal Code (IPC)

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) established in 1861 during British colonial rule made consensual same-sex relations, and other ‘unnatural’ sexual acts illegal that deeply affected the Indian LGBTQ+ community. This research explores the historical beginnings, legal development, and socio-cultural consequences of section 377 by offering a detailed understanding of how it has influenced attitudes concerning sex in the country. The research started by going into detail about how Section 377 came into play during colonial days reflecting the norms of morality taught by the British from the Victorian era. It also looks into the most important legal cases that had been ruled such as Naz Foundation Vs Delhi (2009), Suresh Kumar Koushal Vs Naz Foundation (2013), and Navtej Singh Johar V Union Of India, the three of which brought about the decriminalization of homosexual activity. To sum up, this study examines Section 377 IPC in-depth, depicting its historical context, legal transitions, and its permanent effect on Indian society, as well as showing its attributes. Thus, it also demands consistency in improving LGBTQ+ rights and promoting an open system that is just for everyone

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
