Physics from Time Variability of the VHE Blazar PKS 2155-304
Blazars are the principal extragalactic sources of very high energy gamma-ray emission in the Universe. These objects constitute a sub-class of Active Galactic Nuclei whose
emission is dominated by Doppler boosted non-thermal radiation from plasma outflowing at relativistic speeds from the central engine. This plasma outflow happens in the
form of large-scale collimated structures called jets, which can extend for Mpc in length and transport energy from the central engine of the galaxy to the larger scale intergalac-
tic medium. Over thirty such sources have been discovered to date by ground-based gamma-ray telescopes such as H.E.S.S., and PKS 2155-304 is the prototypical southern-hemisphere representative of this population of objects.
In this thesis I have studied in detail some aspects of the temporal variability of the jet emission from PKS 2155-304, combining coordinated observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, from optical polarimetric measurements to X-ray and ground-based gamma-ray data. The temporal properties of the dataset allowed us to derive important physical information about the structure and emission mechanisms of the source and put constraints to the location of the sites of VHE emission and particle acceleration within the jet. We have also derived a sensitive statistical measure, called Kolmogorov distance,
which we applied to the large outburst observed from PKS 2155-304 in July 2006, to derive the most stringent constraints to date on limits for the violation of Lorentz invariance induced by quantum-gravity effects from AGN measurements

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Low cycle fatigue life improvement of AISI 304 by initial and intermittent wire brush hammering
The effects of hammering by wire brush as a method of improving low cycle fatigue life of highly ductile austenitic stainless steel AISI 304 have been investigated through an experimental study combining imposed strain fatigue tests and assessment of surface characteristic changes under cyclic loading by SEM examinations and XRD analysis. It has been shown that the fatigue life of wire brush hammered surface was increased by 307% at an imposed strain rate of 0.2% and only 17% at an imposed strain rate of 0.5%, comparatively to the turned surface. This increase in fatigue life is explained in terms of fatigue damage that is related to crack networks characteristics and stability which are generated during fatigue on both turned and wire brush hammered surfaces. The improvement of brushed surface is attributed to the role of the surface topography, the near surface stabilized compressive residual stresses and superfi-cial cold work hardening on the fatigue crack network nucleation and growth. It is found that wire brush hammering produces a surface texture that favors, under cyclic loading, nucleation of randomly dispersed short cracks of the order of 40 lm in length stabilized by the compressive residual stress field that reached a value of r0 = 749 MPa. In contrast, turned surface showed much longer unstable cracks of the order of 200 lm in length nucleated in the machining groves with high tendency to propagate under the effect of tensile residual stress field that reached value of r0 = 476 MPa. This improvement is limited to strain rates lower than 0.5%. At higher strain rates, a cyclic plastic deformation induced martensitic phase alters furthermore the fatigue behavior by producing high cyclic strengthening of the bulk mate-rial. This phenomenon lead to a reduction in strain imposed fatigue life. It has also been established that wire brush hammering can be used as an onsite surface treatment to improve the residual fatigue life of components subjected to cyclic loading. The efficiency of this treatment is demonstrated if it is performed at a fraction of service lifetime Ni/Nr lower than 0.5
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Experimental survey on the behaviour of AISI 304 steel sheets subjected to perforation
This paper presents and analyzes the behaviour of AISI 304 steel sheets subjected to perforation under a wide range of impact velocities. The relevance of this steel resides in the potential transformation of austenite into martensite during mechanical loading. This process leads to an increase in strength and ductility of the material. It makes the AISI 304 attractive for many engineering applications, especially for building structural elements responsible for absorbing energy under fast loading. However, this transformation takes place only under determined loading conditions strongly dependent on initial temperature and deformation rate. In order to study the material behaviour under impact loading, perforation tests have been performed at room temperature using both, a drop weight tower and a pneumatic gas gun within the range of impact velocities 2.5 m/s≤V0≤85 m/s. The results are compared with those reported in [18] and [21] for ES steel and TRIP 1000 steel. The comparison highlights the good performance of the AISI 304 under high loading rates. Martensitic transformation taking place in this steel during perforation is identified responsible for such behaviour
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
