Tidal Dwarf Galaxies in the Interacting System NGC 2992/2993

We present multi-wavelength results and numerical simulations of the interacting system NGC 2992/2992 (Arp 245). This pair is composed of two colliding spiral galaxies out of which emanate long stellar tails and a bridge. H II regions are observed at the end of one of the stellar tails at the location of an object classified as a tidal dwarf galaxy. Our spectacular VLA HI map reveals a huge intergalactic ring associated with NGC 2993 and a long tidal tail escaping from NGC 2992 coinciding with the optical one, with at its tip a massive clump that hosts most of the atomic gas in the system. The latter is associated with the star-forming tidal dwarf. Unlike the tail, most of the HI ring has no stellar counterpart

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

A kinematical analysis of NGC 2992

    No full text
Accepted for publication in Astronomy & AstrophysicsWe present long slit spectroscopy for the [OIII] and Halpha\\alpha wavelength ranges along nine different position angles for the Sa Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 2992. Double profiles are present in several regions, suggesting that the gas is not simply following galaxy rotation. A simple kinematical model, which takes into account circular rotation together with a constant radial outflow, seems to be a good approximation to account for the observed kinematics

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

This paper presents long-slit spectral maps of the bicone-shaped extended narrow-line region (ENLR) in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992. We investigate the physical properties of the ENLR via emission-line diagnostics and compare the observations to shock an

Phase I Trial of the Irreversible EGFR and HER2 Kinase Inhibitor BIBW 2992 in Patients With Advanced Solid Tumors

    No full text
Purpose Preclinical data have demonstrated that BIBW 2992 is a potent irreversible inhibitor of ErbB1 (EGFR/HER1) and mutated ErbB1 receptors including the T790M variant, as well as ErbB2 (HER2). A phase I study of continuous once-daily oral BIBW 2992 was conducted to determine safety, maximum-tolerated dose, pharmacokinetics (PK), food effect, and preliminary antitumor efficacy. Patients and Methods Patients with advanced solid tumors were treated. PK evaluation was performed after the first dose and at steady-state. Results Fifty-three patients received BIBW 2992 at 10 to 50 mg/d. BIBW 2992 was generally well-tolerated. The most common adverse effects included diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, and fatigue. Dose-limiting toxicities included grade 3 rash (n = 2) and reversible dyspnea secondary to pneumonitis (n = 1). The recommended phase II dose was 50 mg/d. PK was dose proportional with a terminal elimination half-life ranging between 21.3 and 27.7 hours on day 1 and between 22.3 and 67.0 hours on day 27; BIBW 2992 exposure decreased after food intake. Three patients with non–small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC; two with in-frame exon 19 mutation deletions) experienced confirmed partial responses (PR) sustained for 24, 18, and 34 months, respectively. Two other patients (esophageal carcinoma and NSCLC) had nonconfirmed PRs. A patient with a PR at 10 mg/d progressed and developed symptomatic brain metastases, which subsequently regressed with an increased dose of 40 mg/d of BIBW 2992. A further seven patients had disease stabilization lasting ≥ 6 months. Conclusion Continuous, daily, oral BIBW 2992 is safe and has durable antitumor activity. It is currently being evaluated in phase III trials. </jats:sec

Tracking the Iron Ka line and the Ultra Fast Outflow in NGC 2992 at different accretion states

The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992 has been monitored eight times by XMM-Newton in 2010 and then observed again in 2013, while in 2015 it was simultaneously targeted by Swift and NuSTAR. XMM-Newton always caught the source in a faint state (2-10 keV fluxes ranging from 0.3 to 1.6× 10-11 erg cm-2 s-1) but NuSTAR showed an increase in the 2-10 keV flux up to 6× 10-11 erg cm-2 s-1. We find possible evidence of an Ultra Fast Outflow with velocity v1 = 0.21 ± 0.01c (detected at about 99% confidence level) in such a flux state. The UFO in NGC 2992 is consistent with being ejected at a few tens of gravitational radii only at accretion rates greater than 2% of the Eddington luminosity. The analysis of the low flux 2010/2013 XMM data allowed us to determine that the Iron Ka emission line complex in this object is likely the sum of three distinct components: a constant, narrow one due to reflection from cold, distant material (likely the molecular torus); a narrow, but variable one which is more intense in brighter observations and a broad relativistic one emitted in the innermost regions of the accretion disk, which has been detected only in the 2003 XMM observation.
