Making sense of health education in the Solomon Islands.

    No full text
This article explores both the process and outcomes of a working Partnership between Solomon Islands College for Higher Education and the University of Waikato that explored the development of the initial teacher education health education courses. Through a process of co-construction and inquiry, teacher educators from the Solomon Islands and New Zealand developed a metaphorical context-specific model to represent understandings of health education in the Solomon Islands. The model and what this has meant for teaching and learning in health education at both SOE and in schools is examined

    Displace Altofest

In this essay, the focus will be on how the meanings of space and place played out in Altofest Malta 2018. Lefebvre (1991: 26) underlines that space is a concept; it is also a physical and material space. Lefebvre makes a distinction between abstract space and social spaces, which in this case will mean lived meaningful spaces. Altofest Malta was located in different places around Malta. Places are spaces which have values and meanings stuck to them (Harvey, 1996). Places in Altofest were important because the practices inveigled in them acted as sources of information, and these were incorporated in the performance. Place was also used as a setting, a backdrop in the cultural productions. Space and place have a social and symbolic dimension to them. Space and places do not exist independently of human interaction – they are continuously re-created through social interactions and experiences, norms and meanings. Agnew (1987) and Gieryn (2002) define place as locale, location and sense of place. [Excerpt]peer-reviewe

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Tobacco indicators baseline data: reporting under the National Tobacco Strategy 2012–2018

    No full text
Overview This report presents baseline data for the outcome indicators listed under Part Seven of the National Tobacco Strategy (NTS) 2012-2018, and for an additional 6 indicators that were agreed to when the reporting framework was developed (see Chapter 1 of this report for more information) in consultation with the Intergovernmental Committee on Drugs National Expert Reference Group on Tobacco. As no single tobacco-related data collection is sufficient to inform all the indicators, different data sources and collection years (from 2007-08 to 2011) have been used to report baseline data against these indicators. Baseline data, against which future data can be compared, will enable progress to be measured and desired outcomes to be assessed. A mid-term review is expected to begin in late 2015 to assess improvements over time and determine whether desired outcomes are being achieved
