Manu-1512/Envelopes_Suppressyn: Evolution and antiviral activity of a human protein of retroviral origin
Endogenous retroviruses are abundant components of mammalian genomes descended from ancient germline infections. In several mammals, the envelope proteins encoded by these elements protect against exogenous viruses, but this activity has not been documented in human. We report that our genome harbors a large pool of envelope-derived sequences with the potential to restrict retroviral infection. To further test this, we characterize in detail the envelope-derived protein, Suppressyn. We found that Suppressyn is expressed in preimplantation embryos and developing placenta using its ancestral retroviral promoter. Restriction assays in cell culture show that Suppressyn, and its hominoid orthologs, can restrict infection by extant mammalian type D retroviruses. Our data support a generalizable model of retroviral envelope cooption for host immunity and genome defense.
Summary We found that the human genome expresses a vast pool of envelope sequences of retroviral origin and provide proof of principle that such proteins can restrict zoonotic viruses
The author discusses what is known of J. Brunschwig (c. 1440-c. 1530) then draws attention to his portrait appearing in his Liber de arte distillandi... of 1512. He describes the portrait and notes that it is the only one of Brunschwig executed in his lifetime which has come down to us.Bachoffner Pierre.
An investigation of the dust content in the galaxy pair NGC 1512/1510 from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths
We combine new ASTE/AzTEC 1.1 mm maps of the galaxy pair NGC 1512/1510 with archival Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images covering the wavelength range 3.6–160 μm from the SINGS project. The availability of the 1.1 mm map enables us to measure the long–wavelength tail of the dust emission in each galaxy, and in sub–galactic regions in NGC 1512, and to derive accurate dust masses. The two galaxies form a pair consisting of a large, high–metallicity spiral (NGC 1512) and a low metallicity, blue compact dwarf (NGC 1510), which we use to compare similarities and contrast differences. Using the models of Draine & Li (2007), the derived total dust masses are (2.4±0.6)×10⁷ M⊙ and (1.7±3.6)×10⁵ M⊙ for NGC 1512 and NGC 1510, respectively. The derived ratio of dust mass to H gas mass for the galaxy pair, Md/MH ∼0.0034, is much lower (by at least a factor of 3) than expected, as previously found by Draine et al. (2007). In contrast, regions within NGC 1512, specifically the central region and the arms, do not show such unusually low Md/M ratios; furthermore, the dust– to–gas ratio is within expectations for NGC 1510. These results suggest that a fraction of the H included in the determination of the Md/M ratio of the NGC 1512/NGC 1510 pair is not associated with the star forming disks/regions of either galaxy. Using the dust masses derived from the models of Draine & Li (2007) as reference, we perform simple two–temperature modified–blackbody fits to the far–infrared/mm data of the two galaxies and the sub–regions of NGC 1512, in order to derive and compare the dust masses associated with warm and cool dust temperature components. As generally expected, the warm dust temperature of the low–metallicity, low–mass NGC 1510 (T w⁓36 K) is substantially higher than the corresponding warm temperature of the high–metallicity spiral NGC 1512 (Tw⁓24 K). In both galaxies (albeit with a large uncertainty for NGC 1510), our fits indicate that a substantial fraction (>93%) of the total dust mass is in a cool dust component, with temperatures ⁓14–16 K for NGC 1512 and ⁓15–24 K for NGC 1510. This result is similar to what is determined for a few other nearby galaxies
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Wykazy posłów sejmowych z lat 1507–1512
Lists of Parliamentary Deputies from the 1507–1512 PeriodThe article contains heretofore unknown lists of deputies to one of the oldest Polish Sejm (Parliament) sessions (1507, 1510, 1511, 1512 – the first Sejm, 1512 – the second Sejm), discovered in volume 38 of Rachunki Sejmowe, kept in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw. The lists, which in five cases are records of strawne, i.e. allowances paid to particular deputies, provide valuable information about the oldest Polish Sejm conventions and the parliamentarians of the period. They also inform about 166 parliamentary functions fulfilled by more than a hundred persons. The footnotes contain basic biographical information about the deputies
