The diversity of the lunar crust as told by the new polymict regolith breccia Mount DeWitt 12007 (Antarctica)

    No full text
The lunar crust is a unique window into early planetary differentiation processes in the solar system, bridging the gap between incipient igneous activity in asteroids and the more evolved geodynamics of terrestrial planets like the Earth. Decades after the epic Apollo and Luna missions, the crustal diversity of the Moon remains an outstanding issue which the lunar meteorites - random samples of the lunar surface materials - can contribute to resolve. The new meteorite Mount DeWitt (DEW) 12007 was collected in Victoria Land during the XXVIII PNRA Antarctic Campaign. DEW 12007 is a polymict regolith breccia mainly consisting of glassy impact-melt breccia particles, gabbroic clasts, feldspathic clasts, impact and volcanic glass beads, crystalline basaltic clasts and mingled breccia clasts embedded in a matrix dominated by fine-grained crystals; vesicular glassy veins and rare agglutinates are also present. Main minerals are plagioclase (generally An>85) and clinopyroxene (pigeonites and augites, sometimes interspersed). The presence of tranquillityite, coupled with the petrophysical data, the O-isotope data (Δ 17O=-0.075) and the FeOtot/MnO ratios in olivine (91), pyroxene (65) and bulk rock (77) indicate a lunar origin for DEW 12007. Impactites consist of Al-rich impact melt splashes and plagioclase-rich meta-melt clasts whose parent rocks could be associated to the so-called Mgsuite or to the ferroan anorthosite (FAN) suite of early lunar intrusives. The volcanic products belong to the Very Low Titanium (VLT) or Low Titanium (LT) suites; an unusual subophitic particle could be cryptomare-related. Gabbroic clasts could represent part of a shallow intrusion within a mare volcanic complex with prevailing VLT affinity. DEW 12007 is classified as a mingled regolith breccia which developed on a VLT volcanic complex near a magnesian feldspathic terrane. DEW 12007 is a good compendium of lunar materials which samples a high crustal diversity, comprising clasts from the major Moon terranes (the Feldspathic Highland Terrane, the Procellarum KREEP Terrane and the basaltic maria) and some rare lunar lithologies (i.e., a putative pre-mare basalt and some VLT-like gabbros). DEW 12007 is by now unpaired. A preliminary petrographic and geochemical comparison suggests that a possible launch-pairing relationship between DEW 12007 and other lunar meteorites (Y 793274/981031, QUE 94281 and EET 87521/96008) should be properly investigated. Based on the Clementine remote sensing compositional data, and in light of a comparison with the Apollo and Luna samples, we suggest that a region near the margin of Mare Serenitatis could represent a reliable context for the formation and the ejection of DEW 12007; however, similar locations within Mare Fecunditatis or Mare Crisium could provide an analogous scenario

Abstract Introduction. In January 2013 a 7% crusted 94.2 g ellipsoidal stone was collected on a blue ice patch 40 km WSW of Mount DeWitt (Victoria Land) during the XXVIII PNRA Antarctic Campaign. The official name of the meteorite is Mount DeWitt 12007 (DEW 12007). Methods. Petrography by optical microscopy and SEM. Density by immersion. Porosity by image analysis. Magnetic susceptibility by SM 30. Mineral chemistry by EPMA. Bulk chemistry by XRF and ICP-MS. Oxygen isotopes by Laser Fluorination MS. Petrography and geochemistry: DEW 12007 is a polymict breccia consisting of glassy impact-melt breccia particles, gabbroic clasts, feldspathic clasts, glass beads, basaltic clasts, mingled breccia clasts and numerous crystal fragments (pyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, silica polymorphs). Clasts are embedded in a matrix dominated by very fine-grained crystals; vesicular glassy veins and rare agglutinates are also present. Main minerals are plagioclase, clinopyroxene, olivine, ilmenite, Cr-bearing ulvöspinel, troilite, and Ti-bearing chromite; minor phases include silica polymorphs and tiny grains of baddeleyite, tranquillityite, phosphates, FeNi-metal and schreibersite. Plagioclase composition is An% > 85. Olivine crystals show forsterite contents either below Fo16 or between Fo50-Fo90. Pyroxenes are pigeonites and augites, often exsolved; a pyroxene-like Al-rich phase is observed in several feldspathic clasts. Oxygen isotopic chemistry: δ18O=6.05‰; δ17O=3.13‰. REEs data: La∼29.7 times CI abundance; (La/Sm)n=1.3; Eu/Eu*=0.78. Discussion and Conclusions. FeO/MnO ratios in olivine (ca. 91), pyroxene (ca. 65) and bulk rock (ca. 77) indicate a lunar origin for DEW 12007. This is confirmed by its oxygen isotopic composition. DEW 12007 is classified as a lunar 'mingled' (i.e., containing material from both highlands and maria) regolithic breccia. DEW 12007 is by now unpaired. Glass particles consist of both Al-rich impact melt splashes and picritic glass beads with VLT chemical affinities. Plagioclase-rich clasts are highland rocks rich in HSE-bearing phases (comprising schreibersite). They are texturally indistinguishable from the meta-melt clasts described by some authors in lunar rocks and they fall within the Mg-suite trend on a Mg# (in pyroxenes) vs. An% (in feldspars) diagram. Pyroxenes from the crystalline basalts plot within the VLT or LT fields on the Fe/(Fe+Mg) vs. Ti/(Ti+Cr) diagram; an unusual subophitic fragment plots within the highland field and could be cryptomare-related. Gabbroic clasts are microgranular fragments dominated by clinopyroxene (augite and pigeonite, zoned and not interspersed) and plagioclase with minor silica (probably tridymite), chromite and a single particle of tranquillityite plus withlockite; they lack ilmenite. Pyroxene chemistry shows no relationships between gabbroic clasts and highlands materials, suggesting instead an association of the former with the VLT-like mare volcanics, in agreement with textural and mineralogical features. Gabbroic clasts in DEW 12007 could therefore represent part of a shallow intrusion within a volcanic complex with prevailing VLT affinity. DEW 12007 is distinct from roughly three quarters of other known lunar meteorites because it has a 'mingled' bulk composition and could help identify a meteoroid source region on the lunar surface. In fact DEW 12007 is a regolith breccia, and as such, it can be compared with remote sensing geochemical data collected from the Moon’s surface to constrain its likely provenance. We searched the Clementine datasets using bulk composition parameters of 0.61 ± 1 wt. % Ti and 12.6 ± 1 wt. % FeO. On the basis of i) Clementine remote sensing compositional data and ii) major element chemistry of VLT glass beads and crystalline basalts DEW 12007 can be successfully associated to the regolith of some areas of Mare Serenitatis

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The high content of α-galactooligosaccharide in mung beans has the potential for supporting the growth of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), therefore it can be developed as fermented plant-based milk that substituted Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk. The purposes of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of LAB Lactococcus lactis NBRC 12007 in the fermentation process of mung bean milk and to observe the quality differences of fermented mung bean milk with UHT milk.  Previously, preparations were made for starter L. lactis NBRC 12007 in MRSB medium and then sub cultured to UHT milk. Furthermore, 3% of the culture was inoculated into each of the mung bean milk substrate and UHT milk as a starter for the fermentation process and incubated for 24 hours at 37oC. During this process, the effectiveness of LAB was tested (total cell, total acid, total protein, pH, antibacterial) and the quality test of fermented products (organoleptic and physical).  Based on total cells, total acid, total protein, pH, and antibacterial test findings, fermented mung bean milk products had a higher value than UHT milk products. During the process, it was proven that L. lactis NBRC 12007 had high effectiveness in producing and improving the quality of fermented mung bean milk compared to UHT milk. It is assumed that the content of oligosaccharides supports the growth of LAB and the fermentation process

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
