A Note on the Tiberius' inscription CIL 3, 3190 = 10157 from Salona

The author deals with the Tiberius' inscription CIL 3, 3190 = 10157, once brought to Split from the ruins of Salona, to have become the property of the Papalić family from Split. The inscription is basically known from the transcripts made by Dinko Zavorović and Šimun Ljubavac, to have been published through later manuscript variants in the third volume of CIL, under the number 3199. Some time later, in the pavement of one of the streets of Split the fragmentary inscription was found, containing the similar content to that of the first two lines of the Ljubavac's transcript of CIL 3, 3199. Because of obvious similarities, the fragment of Split was linked with the inscription CIL 3, 3199, and was published in the fourth volume of Ephemeris Epigraphica as well as in the supplement to the third volume of CIL, to bear the epigraphic reference CIL 3, 3199 = 10157 since. Since some recent studies started to question the link of the fragment of Split with the inscription CIL 3, 3199, and claim that the publishers of the CIL 17/4,2 made an obvious mistake in its restitution, the basic sources of information on the inscription are being discussed once again. After a critical debate, the final conclusion has been made that the inscriptions CIL 3, 3199 and CIL 3, 10157 are undoubtedly one and the same inscription. Accordingly, following the fragment from the Archeological Museum in Split, as well as the transcripts made by D. Zavorović and Š. Ljubavac, a more comprehensive reading of the inscription is proposed. Based on certain elements of its content, the inscription may be related with two Tiberius' inscriptions which records the construction of roads in Illyricum. However, that this inscription records road building cannot be stated on a certain basis

The fallacy about the Fifth Dolabella’s Plate in Salona - Inscription CIL 3, 3199 = 10157

In the Split cathedral bell tower built in were four plates showing two inscriptions (CIL3, 3198a = 10156a + 3200 and CIL 3, 3201 = 10159 + 3198b = 10156b) on constructing of five roads that led from Salona to continental parts of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The roads were constructed in the years 16 to 20 by the 7th and the 11th legions, at the time of the governor Publius Cornelius Dolabella, who held this office in Dalmatia at the end of the Augustus’ and the beg inning of the Tiberius’ reigns, in the years 14 to 20. The plates were removed from the Split cathedral bell tower in 1896 to have been taken to the then building of the Archaeological Museum in Split, to be completed and once again restored by M. Abramić there. The inscription plates most probably stood by the Porta Caesarea in Salona, from where roads led through the Klis Pass to continental parts of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The previous two inscriptions, published in CIL 17/4,2, are related to yet another inscription, in the CIL numbered 3199 and 10157. The inscription 3199 was entered in the CIL as a transcription from historic sources. Its destiny and original location are perfectly unclear , especially it cannot be claimed to be from the Split cathedral bell tower and to be related to the Dolabella’s road inscriptions. The inscription CIL 3, 10157 is a fragmentarily preserved, most probably Tiberius’, imperial inscription. Of the inscription preserved are only parts of the name of the divine August and parts of abbreviations of the imperial title pontifex maximus and of the tribune honours. Measurements revealed that the letters of the fragmented inscription CIL 3, 10157 are twice the size of the letters in the words relating to the imperial names in Salonitan inscriptions of the Dolabella’s time, as stated also by M. Abramić. The preserved frag ment provides for no conclusion on what the inscription CIL 3,10157 related to (probably some large public construction works at the time of the emperor Tiberius). It is particularly hard to relate it to the Dolabella’s inscriptions on constructing five military roads from Salona to the continental Dalmatia. The inscription catalogued as CIL 3, 3199 = 10157 has been restored again in CIL 17/4, 2, where milestones in the Roman province of Dalmatia are dealt with. The mistaken relating this inscription to the Dolabella’s inscriptions in CIL 3, dealing with road constructions, has been carried on also to CIL 17/4, 2, where it is presented as the fifth Dolabella’s plate

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
