Nation and Narrative: A Study of Nuruddin Farah’s Maps

    No full text
The article entitled "Nation and Narrative: A Study of Nuruddin Farah\u27s Maps" attempts a postcolonial reading of the text trying to froground the assertion of a national self. The manner in which literature offers itself as a powerful platform to assert national identity and the novel adroitly doing the same would serve as the main thrust areas. Elaborate study on the concept of nation as expounded by critics like Homi Bhaba , Benedict Anderson and the like would serve as the background of the analysis. The notion of national identity and the construction of an image of Somalia as attempted by the author stand as testimony to the same. The author trying to reiterate his lost national self and how he skillfully uses literature as its medium, as part of the postcolonial agenda, is the focus point of the article

    Yesterday, Tomorrow

    No full text
’Yesterday, Tomorrow’ is based on Nuruddin Farah’s book, Yesterday, Tomorrow: Voices from the Somali Diaspora. It is a portrayal of the personal stories of people who, due to political instability in postcolonial Somalia, find themselves forced to flee their homes, cross borders and become refugees. Loss, borders and politics are at the very centre of this piece. This staged reading brings to mind the 125th anniversary of the Berlin Conference, where Bismarck invited 13 other European governors to divide the African continent into a series of colonial states and illogical borders, laying the framework for more than a century of civil strife. The individual stories and subtle portraits of the countries of exile create a moving image of life between different worlds.Playwright Amy Evans seeks through her work to critically examine the impact of displacement, alienation and political violence on the human spirit. Her first play, Achidi J’s Final Hours, was inspired by the true story of Mareame N’Deye Sarr, a young woman who was killed in a confrontation with German police in Aschaffenburg in July 2001. Her newest play, The Most Unsatisfied Town, based on the death-in-custody of Oury Jalloh, was completed while in residency at the ICI Berlin earlier this year. Grada Kilomba’s literary works explore the fields of memory, trauma and post-colonialism. Among others, she is the author of Plantation Memories (2008) a compilation of episodes of everyday racism written in the form of short psychoanalytical stories. Currently she is a fellow at the ICI Berlin, where she is writing her new book Kalunga based on the Orishas and the post-transatlantic experience of fragmentation, loss and colonial convalescing. Michael Edode Ojake (actor) was born in 1961 in Lagos, Nigeria. He was a production assistant at the National Theatre in Lagos and studied Acting at the Academy of Theatre and Film in Sofia, Bulgaria. Since 1990 he lives and works in Berlin as an actor, director and author in film and theatre. Araba Walton is a German actress and singer. She worked for five years with a number of theatre companies in London, until an engagement with the Musical ‘The Lion King’ brought her back to her home country. Currently she has a capital role in the movie ‘Berlin Calling’. Nuruddin Farah is one of the most acclaimed contemporary writers. Born in 1945 in Baidoa, Somalia. Farah was sentenced to death in absentia for political reasons in 1976. After spending many years in exile in Africa, Europe and the U.S., he now lives in Cape Town, South Africa. He is the winner of the prestigious Neustadt Prize for Literature (1998) and a perennial nominee for the Nobel Prize for Literature. Book IV of the "Bustan us-Salatin" by Nuruddin ar-Raniri: A study from the manuscripts of a 17th century Malay work written in North Sumatra.

This thesis examines the composition of the Bustan us-Salatin by Nuruddin ar-Raniri using internal evidence to establish the aims of the author and the nature of the work. This analysis shows that the Bustan us-Salatin displays far greater planning and organization of material than has hitherto been recognized. It is suggested that Chapters 11, 12 and 13 of Book II were not part of the work as envisaged by Nuruddin ar-Raniri. An edition of Book IV of the bustan us-Salatin and a translation of the text is presented. The edition is accompanied by textual notes and lists of proper names and unusual words. An examination of the Arabic sources of the stories of Book IV has been undertaken with special emphasis on the works of al-Ghazzali and the Rawd at-rayahin of al-Yati'i and shows the selectivity with which Nuruddin ar-Raniri used materials from such sources. Parallel themes in Malay Literature have been examined concentrating especially on those within the Malay Taj us-Salatin and Ilikayut Bakhtiar

    No full text
The focal point of this study is the social status and the political status of women in Somalia as depicted in the novels of Nuruddin Farah (1945- ). Based on their roles in the novels, the female characters are classified as the traditional Somali woman who symbolizes what is now the status of women in Somalia; the. transitional Somali woman who symbolizes what _is becoming the status of women in Somalia; the liberated modern Somali woman who symbolizes what should be the status of women in Somalia; and the modern Western woman who, because of her Western values and liaisons with Somali males, serves as a contrast to the Somali woman in every classification. The study contends that changes in the status of women in Somalia are related to changing forces in Somali religion, politics and economics, while showing that Farah is justly called a feminist because of his sympathetic treatment of issues raised in African feminism, such as female genital mutilation, forced polygamous marriage, oppression of barren women, and "muledom.

Teorias Oníricas e O Romance Onírico de Inversão de Nuruddin Farah

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to establish a connection between dream studies and literature, analyzing how different dream theories influenced the reading and possibly the construction of three contemporary African novels. The object of analysis is the trilogy Blood in the sun by Somali writer Nuruddin Farah, in which the author proposes the combination of two narrative layers, one given by the characters’ experience in their vigil and another given by their dreams. The immobility experienced by them when they are fully awake, caused by the political and social oppression they face in their communities, is compensated in dream spaces, reversing what they experience in the real world. For the understanding of such works, in which dreams are not only appendages to narrative, but elements that intensely change the structure of the novels, it is necessary to extend the critical repertoire with the dialogue with multiple dream theories.O objetivo deste trabalho é estabelecer uma conexão entre os estudos dos sonhos e a literatura, analisando como diversas teorias oníricas influenciaram a leitura e possivelmente a construção de três romances africanos contemporâneos.
