Empty nose syndrome : case report
Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS) is a term first introduced by Kern and Moore which is used to describe a rare spectrum of various symptoms suffered by patients who had had previous radical turbinate surgery with a CT scan appearance of the paranasal sinuses after gross tissue loss. The most common symptom is so- called ‘‘paradoxical’’ nasal obstruction, reported by the patient despite objectively permeable cavities on clinical examination with no obstacle found on imaging or rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry.1 In most cases, the inferior turbinate (IT) has been resected radically even though middle turbinate (MT) resection has also been implicated.2 Incidence is unknown, as there have been no specific studies published. ‘Too Many Empty Homes, Too Many Homeless’ – A Novel Design and Procurement Framework for Transforming Empty Homes through Sustainable Solutions
The Retro-Tek research project investigates the potential of existing buildings in the UK contributing towards the EU 2050 CO2 target, through a sustainable retrofit programme aimed specifically at empty homes. It proposes a novel design and procurement methodology to bring empty homes back into use, integrate sustainable technologies and materials and offer them back to the market. Along with the obvious environmental sustainability benefits, it also assists communities and areas in need of regeneration, supporting the developments to both help address housing shortages and tackle socio-economic problems with empty, dilapidated dwellings. The project has formed a consortium of stakeholders and established unique design and procurement processes and methodologies relevant to the sustainable retrofit process. Their viability was tested via undertaking two case studies of representative empty homes, establishing results within a measurable data format. Vulcan might have existed, and Neptune not : On the Semantics of Empty Names
Empty names such as ‘Vulcan’ or ‘Sherlock Holmes’ have intrigued philosophers of language at least since Frege. They are clearly problematic for Millian accounts of the semantics of proper names, but also for certain recent versions of descriptivism trying to accommodate Kripkean intuitions regarding proper names. In ‘Proper Names and Relational Modality’ (2006), we suggest an alternative to such semantics: introducing the technique of semantic evaluation switching, we develop a semantics allowing (non-empty) proper names to have descriptive contents while accommodating Kripkean modal intuitions. This chapter extends the switcher semantics to empty names.</p
Theoretical maximum capacity as a benchmark for empty vehicle redistribution in personal rapid transit
A personal rapid transit system uses compact, computer-guided vehicles running on dedicated guideways to carry individuals or small groups directly between pairs of stations. Vehicles move on demand when a passenger requests service at his or her origin station. Because the number of trips requested from a station need not equal the number of trips ending there, some vehicles must run empty to balance the flows. The empty vehicle redistribution (EVR) problem is to decide which empty vehicles to move and when and where to move them; an EVR algorithm makes these decisions in real time, as passengers arrive and request service. A method was developed for finding the theoretical maximum demand (with a given spatial distribution) that a given system could serve with any EVR algorithm, which provides a benchmark against which particular EVR algorithms can be compared. The maximum passenger demand that a particular EVR algorithm can serve can be determined by simulation and then compared with the benchmark. The method is applied to two simple EVR heuristics on two example systems. The results suggest that this is a useful method for determining the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of EVR heuristics across a range of networks, passenger demands, and fleet size

Logistics of empty marine containers
A research on strategies for port planning, concerning the storage and flow of empty marine containers in the port of Rotterdam. The aim of this research is to give insight in the effects of port planning strategies of the Rotterdam Port Authority (RPA), regarding storage facilities for empty containers (empty depots) at the Port of Rotterdam (PoR). Empty depots generate transport of empty containers (often by truck), and increasingly require port terrain. Given the expected growth of trade volumes, the environmental regulations and the quality of the accessibiliy of the PoR requires a planning strategy for empty depots. In the allocation of storage areas for empty containers the RPA needs to decide upon the location, the quantity, the dimensions of the required area, the related infrastructure (which impacts the accessibility of the port) and the lease price of empty depot terrain.TILTransport, Infrastructure and LogisticsDelft University of Technolog

Efficient production of foot-and-mouth disease virus empty capsids in insect cells following down regulation of 3C protease activity
Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is a significant economically and distributed globally pathogen of Artiodactyla. Current vaccines are chemically inactivated whole virus particles that require large-scale virus growth in strict bio-containment with the associated risks of accidental release or incomplete inactivation. Non-infectious empty capsids are structural mimics of authentic particles with no associated risk and constitute an alternate vaccine candidate. Capsids self-assemble from the processed virus structural proteins, VP0, VP3 and VP1, which are released from the structural protein precursor P1-2A by the action of the virus-encoded 3C protease. To date recombinant empty capsid assembly has been limited by poor expression levels, restricting the development of empty capsids as a viable vaccine. Here expression of the FMDV structural protein precursor P1-2A in insect cells is shown to be efficient but linkage of the cognate 3C protease to the C-terminus reduces expression significantly. Inactivation of the 3C enzyme in a P1-2A-3C cassette allows expression and intermediate levels of 3C activity resulted in efficient processing of the P1-2A precursor into the structural proteins which assembled into empty capsids. Expression was independent of the insect host cell background and leads to capsids that are recognised as authentic by a range of anti-FMDV bovine sera suggesting their feasibility as an alternate vaccine
Synthesis Without Meta-analysis of Empty Nose Treatments: Is There Evidence that Empty Nose Syndrome Treatments Are Effective?
Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is a rare complication following nasal surgery, particularly surgery of the turbinates, with limited effectiveness of its treatments. A synthesis without meta-analysis (SWiM) was carried out to assess treatments and their reported effectiveness. In August 2022, a literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Database, Science Direct, and Embase. Article selection, eligibility assessment, and risk of bias evaluation of each article were performed independently by each author and then compared. A synthesis without meta-analysis was then conducted on the selected studies. Forty-three articles were selected from 445 potential references, encompassing 586 patients. The quality of publications on ENS was generally poor or critical. Reported treatments for ENS, attributed to a combination of endonasal aerodynamic changes, impaired intranasal trigeminal function, and psychological factors, primarily consisted of intranasal topical instillations, lower meatus filling, stem cell therapy, and psychological/psychiatric management. However, all reported case series were subject to significant biases. As it was not feasible to address the question, “How effective are the treatments for ENS?” this synthesis aimed to answer, “Is there evidence of effectiveness of ENS treatments?” Possible treatments encompassed medical, surgical, psychological, and respiratory interventions. Nevertheless, the available data with limited bias were insufficient to provide precise recommendations for their indications. The Study Group was asked to develop a methodology to allow more efficient and effective direction of empty wagon movements. The Study Group chose to develop two linear programming approaches. One was for allocating empty wagons, and the other modelled both empty and full wagons. Although large in size, the models were otherwise feasible, showing that, conceptually, the method would work. However, there is still a major amount of development work required to implement the system
