The Fornax Spectroscopic Survey - Low surface brightness galaxies in Fornax

No full text
The Fornax Spectroscopic Survey is a large optical spectroscopic survey of all 14 000 objects with 16.5 < B-J < 19.7 in a 12 deg(2) area of sky centered on the Fornax Cluster. We are using the 400-fibre Two Degree Field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope: the multiplex advantage of this system allows us to observe objects conventionally classified as "stars" as well as "galaxies". This is the only way to minimise selection effects caused by image classification or assessing cluster membership. In this paper we present the first measurements of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies we have detected both in the Fornax Cluster and among the background field galaxies. The new cluster members include some very low luminosity (M-B approximate to -11.5 mag) dwarf ellipticals, whereas the background LSB galaxies are luminous (-19.6 < M-B < -17.0 mag) disk-like galaxies

Low surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the Bristol Anglo-Australian observatory Virgo Cluster survey

We describe a new, deep photographic survey of the Virgo Cluster which uses multiple exposures on Tech Pan film with the United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope to probe the dwarf population to fainter surface brightness limits than previous surveys. We have identified galaxies having sizes (> 3 arcsec scale length) and surface brightnesses (I 24.5 R mag arcsec(-2)) characteristic of those expected for dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the cluster. The survey is providing substantial samples of extremely low luminosity galaxies outside the environment of the Local Group and nearby groups for the first time. An initial study of two small areas has found dwarf spheroidal candidates in large numbers (500 deg(-2)) which indicate a steep, continuously rising luminosity function at low luminosities.</p

Found: High Surface Brightness compact galaxies

We are using the 2dF spectrograph to make a survey of all objects (`stars' and `galaxies') in a 12 sq.deg region towards the Fornax cluster. We have discovered a population of compact emission-line galaxies unresolved on photographic sky survey plates and therefore missing in most galaxy surveys based on such material. These galaxies are as luminous as normal field galaxies. Using H-alpha to estimate star formation they contribute at least an additional 5 per cent to the local star formation rate

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

High spatial resolution galactic 3D extinction mapping with IPHAS

Get PDF
We present an algorithm (MEAD, for 'Mapping Extinction Against Distance') which will determine intrinsic (r' - i') colour, extinction, and distance for early-A to K4 stars extracted from the IPHAS r'/ i'/H alpha photometric data base. These data can be binned up to map extinction in three dimensions across the northern Galactic plane. The large size of the IPHAS data base (similar to 200 million unique objects), the accuracy of the digital photometry it contains and its faint limiting magnitude (r' similar to 20) allow extinction to be mapped with fine angular (similar to 10 arcmin) and distance (similar to 0.1 kpc) resolution to distances of up to 10 kpc, outside the solar circle. High reddening within the solar circle on occasion brings this range down to similar to 2 kpc. The resolution achieved, both in angle and depth, greatly exceeds that of previous empirical 3D extinction maps, enabling the structure of the Galactic Plane to be studied in increased detail. MEAD accounts for the effect of the survey magnitude limits, photometric errors, unresolved interstellar medium (ISM) substructure and binarity. The impact of metallicity variations, within the range typical of the Galactic disc is small. The accuracy and reliability of MEAD are tested through the use of simulated photometry created with Monte Carlo sampling techniques. The success of this algorithm is demonstrated on a selection of fields and the results are compared to the literature
