La ritraduzione di Momo di Michael Ende. Un tentativo di riposizionamento
This article examines the changing reception of the German author Michael Ende in the Italian literary field through the various editions of his fantasy novel Momo (1973). A few years after the first translation by Silvia Stefani, published by Vallecchi (1974), the novel was entirely retranslated by Daria Angeleri, published by SEI (1981) and then reprinted several times by Longanesi. The Italian publishing history of the novel, accompanied by a contrastive analysis of the two translations, highlights the attempt to reposition the novel in a broader publishing context, free of generational barriers, to redefine the author’s literary status
A translation with footnotes. The Czech version of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series and the translator’s voice in the paratext
One of the many reasons for the lasting popularity of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series is the strong presence of an authorial voice in his laconic, ingenious footnotes; it is no coincidence that Pratchett’s posthumous biography is subtitled A Life with Footnotes (Wilkins, 2023). Pratchett’s work, full of wordplay and culture-specific references, also places substantial demands on its translators, many of whom are highly acclaimed for their craft – including the Czech translator of Discworld, Jan Kantůrek. In addition to his skilful and engaging approach to Pratchett’s challenging prose, Kantůrek also added his own footnotes alongside the author’s. These range from explanations of references tied to the original anglophone context, to the translator’s own anecdotes and jokes, going well beyond the traditional device for solving intercultural conundrums. While footnotes as ‘the translator’s shame’ (Mounin 1963, xi) have traditionally been viewed as a necessary evil, recent years have brought research exploring footnotes as a valuable component in a translator’s toolkit (Haroon 2019; Miao and Salem, 2008; Paloposki 2010), as well as a method for showcasing the translator’s agency (Paloposki 2010). This paper reimagines footnotes as an opportunity for exploring the translator’s creativity, and provides an insight into the role of the translator’s voice in speculative fiction
La lettura geologica del paesaggio delle Serre: i processi evolutivi, dalla genesi sino alle forme attuali: conoscere per valorizzare
EnThe Serre correspond to a series of ridges with tabular tops, elongated in a NNW – SSE direction, with a more developed south-western flank, made up of Upper Cretaceous carbonate formations that characterize the Salento landscape. The Serre constitute structural highs (horsts) delimited by normal faults that lower the adjacent blocks, giving rise to tectonic depressions (grabens) which over geological times have been progressively partially filled by the products of the most recent sedimentations of the Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary. The carbonate nature of the rocks that constitute the ridges, the tectonic and stratigraphic structure, the geological processes that have occurred over time have given rise to a wide variety of forms that uniquely characterize the landscape of the Serre. Among these forms we have the case study of the Spiggiani sinkhole (Salve). The Spiggiani site is the first example of recovery of a sinkhole in Salento for tourism and information purposes on geodiversity and biodiversity. This recovery takes on even more exceptional value and becomes unique in the regional panorama if compared to the history of the geomorphological component, violated over the years with authorized interventions to carry out quarrying activities and as a waste disposal site and which, instead, following safety measures and reclamation, specifically identified, experiences a real environmental recovery aimed at creating social and cultural value.
EnThe abbeys of San Mauro and San Salvatore and considerably enrich our knowledge of the activity of the Salentine Greeks in the 13th century, a period of intense bookmaking activity, but also of valuable artistic production in painting quality and expressive language. New information or specifications are provided here, derived mainly from the reading or re-editing of some inscriptions, tituli and scrolls.
In this paper we aim to show how science-fiction as a medial genre can take on the function of a territorial device analyzing the construction of the fictional worlds of Star Wars, observing in it two trajectories of territorialization: an extradiegetic one, in which the narrative is developed on an ecosystem level; and a diegetic one, in which different planet-worlds are constructed by modulating the three configurations of territoriality (landscape, place, environment) in ecosystemic and transmedia terms. From the analysis emerges the construction of an exploration and scalar sci-fi territoriality, with different steps: the distinguishability of the worlds with respect to space, their landscape iconicization, the construction of social systems in which the different declinations of technology have an impact on an environmental and socio-political level, their positioning and the individualization for the spectators. The transmedia use of science-fiction in Star Wars thus assumes a territorial function that has contributed to imprinting the saga in the imaginary and making it a myth of mass culture, capable of intercepting different instances of our world thanks to the construction of territories that oscillate between the second and third order of simulacra
Protest Policing and Political Dynamics: Violent Repression in Democratic Argentina
This paper integrates perspectives from subnational political dynamics, social movements, and police studies to examine how police responses to protest events are shaped by political considerations alongside the specific characteristics of the protests themselves. Drawing on newspaper accounts and in-depth interviews, the study analyzes variations in police responses to protests in Argentina between 1997 and 2007-a period marked by widespread social unrest and public demonstrations. The findings suggest that, in this context, police repression and protest management were influenced not only by the nature of the protests but also by broader political decisions and entrenched illiberal structures (Behrend and Whitehead, 2017). While these dynamics are particularly evident in Argentina's federal system and history of contentious politics, they may also provide insights into broader patterns of protest policing in other contexts
Javanese ethnic minorities create peace: Phenomenological study of multicultural personality
Ethnic conflicts due to discrimination, oppression, violence, harassment, and genocide perpetrated by majority ethnic groups continue to this day, causing suffering and misery to ethnic minorities. Attempts made to address the ethnic conflicts are in vain. One alternative solution is fostering harmony in multicultural communities through preventive efforts. Hence, this study aims to describe the multicultural personality of ethnic minority communities that contribute to establishing peace in heterogeneous societies. Further, the theme of multicultural personality contributes to developing peaceful inter-ethnic relations. The study employed a phenomenological research design carried out in Seluma, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with key figures from the Javanese ethnic minority groups. The chosen technique for data analysis was interpretative phenomenological analysis. The research findings revealed the primary theme of multicultural personality and key sub-themes: cultural empathy, emotional stability, social initiative, open-mindedness, and flexibility. All of these contribute to peace in multicultural communities. The implications of this study are significant as a model to establish peace, applicable to communities with diverse ethnic backgrounds
Religious freedom in Polish legislation
EnThe subject of this article is religious freedom, which is one of the basic and most important values from the point of view of an individual. The scope of this freedom is subject to constitutional and international protection, as well as provided for in acts of internal law. Religious freedom is also protected on the basis of ultima ratio by means of criminal and civil law. This study focuses on the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, as they exerted the greatest influence on the jurisprudence of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal. The study includes an analysis of the provisions of the constitution of April 2, 1997 relating to the issue of religious freedom in the individual and institutional aspect. Moreover, an attempt was made to answer the question whether the guarantees of religious freedom are adequately secured under international and national law
