No full textThe contribution concerns what is housed on the covers of the handout copy of the Dictionary of the Italian Language, conceived and edited by Niccolò Tommaseo and Bernardo Bellini, published by Giuseppe and Luigi Pomba for the types of the Unione Tipografico-Editrice Torinese in the years immediately following Unification. Imprinted on the covers of the handouts is a wealth of information pertaining to the Dictionary, other publications of the publishing house, and other products of varied genres. Despite the diversity and sometimes heterogeneity of topics and products, everything housed on the covers represents, at the time of publication, a formidable showcase to inform, educate and entice purchase, dialogue with subscribers, and shape taste to selected readings. It is a specific line of the publisher, dynamic and strong-willed, which will shape the consciences of men and women in the years of Unity

No full textThe research conducted among the private papers of the Piedmontese naturalist and lexicographer Giacinto Carena, preserved at the Academy of Sciences of Turin, made it possible to trace a vast quantity of unpublished materials. The "fund Carena" is mainly composed by the correspondence (with around 200 correspondents), the travel diaries, which show the evolution of his interests in scientific nomenclature, and the preparatory notes for the Prontuario di vocaboli that Carena published in 1846 and 1853 and which was followed by a third posthumous part in 1860. The essay intends to give an account of the material present in the Carena collection, trying to capture the different phases of his lexicological and onomasiological study

Statistical enhanced learning for modeling and prediction tennis matches at Grand Slam tournaments
No full textIn this manuscript, we concentrate on a specific type of covariates, which we call statistically enhanced, for modeling tennis matches for men at Grand slam tournaments. Our goal is to assess whether these enhanced covariates have the potential to improve statistical learning approaches, in particular, with regard to the predictive performance. For this purpose, various proposed regression and machine learning model classes are compared with and without such features. To achieve this, we considered three slightly enhanced variables, namely elo rating along with two different player age variables. This concept has already been successfully applied in football, where additional team ability parameters, which were obtained from separate statistical models, were able to improve the predictive performance.In addition, different interpretable machine learning (IML) tools are employed to gain insights into the factors influencing the outcomes of tennis matches predicted by complex machine learning models, such as the random forest. Specifically, partial dependence plots (PDP) and individual conditional expectation (ICE) plots are employed to provide better interpretability for the most promising ML model from this work. Furthermore, we conduct a comparison of different regression and machine learning approaches in terms of various predictive performance measures such as classification rate, predictive Bernoulli likelihood, and Brier score. This comparison is carried out on external test data using cross-validation, rolling window, and expanding window strategies
Sentiment and Emotions in Taylor Swift’s Albums. A Journey through the Eras
No full textAmerican singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has navigated different musical styles throughout her career, ranging from country, to pop, to indie folk. Her albums are characterized by establishing the beginning of new eras, each marked by a defined aesthetics and sound. This research aims to scrutinize the evolution of Taylor Swift’s lyrics throughout her discography in terms of sentiment and emotions. The main objective is to find out whether actual alignment exists between Taylor Swift’s lyrics and the supposed eras that according to the artist have marked her work. To do so, we examine her discography in terms of sentiment and emotions. We use a mixed-methods approach to analyze each album’s lyrics using several advanced text processing tools. To deal with sentiment, we analyze Swift’s discography using an advanced sentiment analysis system that offers time series analysis. On the other hand, we extract the most salient emotions using an advanced corpus query tool designed for content and discourse analysis that allows the identification and raking of emotions according to Parrott’s list. The results show that love and sadness dominate Swift’s discography, with a predominantly negative sentiment. Additionally, there is a mismatch between the emotions in her lyrics and their sentiment classification, indicating that Swift’s style does not rely on explicit positive or negative terms. Instead, her use of rhetorical devices and subtle language conveys meaning through more implicit forms
Punk Music, Discourse, and Culture. Exploring the Intersection with Edupunk
No full textThis study explores the dynamic relationship between punk music, its evolving discourse, and its influence on the edupunk movement, which advocates for alternative, learner-centered education rooted in punk’s anti-authoritarian and DIY ethos. Using an interdisciplinary approach combining critical discourse analysis, cultural studies, and education, the research examines how punk music serves as a platform for socio-cultural critique, artistic expression, and educational innovation. By analyzing punk lyrics across time and tracing the genre’s thematic and stylistic shifts, the study highlights punk’s role in fostering rebellion, countercultural critique, and grassroots activism. It also investigates how punk’s principles of accessibility, inclusivity, and learner agency inform edupunk practices, challenging traditional educational structures and empowering learners. Ultimately, the study highlights the potential of punk-inspired approaches to promote social justice, critical consciousness, and cultural resistance in education, while acknowledging the complexities of this intersection
La biofilia, fra eredità genetica e cultura
No full textCulture mediates our relationship with other species and the environment. But its intervention does not occur on a blank slate. We have co-evolved for millions of years in close contact and interaction with our planet. This bond appears to be inscribed in our own genome. According to important studies in environmental psychology, at the basis of our attraction for what we usually call "nature" there is an innate psychic bond, called "biophilia". An important source of well-being on a physiological, cognitive and emotional level, biophilia corresponds to a primary psychological need that cannot be disregarded without consequences. However, biophilia doesn't necessarily express itself. Its development depends, to a significant extent, on cultural transmission. Entangled between genetics and culture, between human and nonhuman, and extremely important for pro-environmental behaviour, biophilia appears to be to the author as a promising new field of investigation for educational anthropology
L'inchiesta della "Carta dei Dialetti Italiani" a Oria (BR), sessant'anni dopo: evoluzione e cambiamenti nella parlata oritana odierna
No full textItÈ opinione comune che le parlate locali stiano ormai soccombendo all'italiano, anche loro italianizzandosi o, per i più ottimisti, agonizzando fino a esserne vinte: in questo elaborato verrà indagata questa convinzione, prendendo in esame la parlata locale di Oria, in provincia di Brindisi, che è presente fra quelle considerate per l'inchiesta della Carta dei Dialetti Italiani; l'indagine in questione sarà condotta prendendo in esame i dati raccolti per questa inchiesta a Oria nel 1966 da Giovan Battista Mancarella, mettendoli a confronto coi dati raccolti riproponendo lo stesso questionario (ampliato e rivisto) a un gruppo di ragazzi e ragazze oritani. Lo scopo è osservare e documentare i cambiamenti linguistici avuti in sessant'anni (in questo primo studio prendendo in esame solamente il vocalismo e il consonantismo), con particolare attenzione ai motivi del cambiamento e, laddove sono accaduti, all'impoverimento e appiattimento lessicale.EnIt is a common opinion that local dialects are now succumbing to Italian, either becoming Italianized themselves or, for the more optimistic, slowly disappearing until vanishing completely. This brief study aims to investigate this belief by examining the local dialect of Oria, a town in the province of Brindisi, which is included among those considered in the Italian Dialect Atlas survey. The analysis will focus on the data collected in Oria in 1966 by Giovan Battista Mancarella for this survey, comparing them with data gathered by administering the same (expanded and revised) questionnaire to a group of young people from Oria. The goal is to observe and document the linguistic changes that have occurred over sixty years, (In this initial study, we will examine only the vocalism and consonantism) with particular attention to the causes of these changes and, where applicable, the lexical impoverishment and flattening that may have occurred
