    No full text

The emotional, social and cognitive competency profile of data scientist: An exploratory study

    No full text
The advent of digital economy is deeply and rapidly changing not only our habits but also the practice of management. More and more business activities are digitized and a new profile of workers has emerged in the last few years, namely that of data scientist. If its technical skills are quite clear, the emotional, social, and cognitive (ESC) competences are still underexplored. This study addresses this void through an exploratory study on a sample of data scientists. In-depth empirical evidence collected through Behavioural Event Interview technique demonstrated that data scientists require a wide repertoire of behavioural competencies to attain successful performance and to face the challenge of the digital transformation. This study advances the research about Big Data and their impact on emerging jobs, identifying the most frequently ESC competencies activated by data scientist while performing their job and deriving implications in terms of the competency-based human resource management practices

Hotelling-Bertrand duopoly competition under firrm-specific network e effects

When dealing with consumer choices, social pressure plays a crucial role; also in the context of market competition, the impact of network/social effects has been largely recognized. However, the effects of firm-specific social recognition on market equilibria has never been addressed so far. In this paper, we consider a duopoly where competing firms are differentiated solely by the level of social (or network) externality they induce on consumers’ perceived utility. We fully characterize the subgame perfect Nash equilibria in locations, prices and market shares. Under a scenario of weak social externality, the firms opt for maximal differentiation and the one with the highest social recognition has a relative advantage in terms of profits. Surprisingly, this outcome is not persistent; excessive social recognition may lead to adverse coordination of consumers: the strongest firm can eventually be thrown out of the market with positive probability. This scenario is related to a Pareto inefficient trap of no differentiation

"Fratto guizza via pria che muoia tutto". Walter Benjamin e un verso dantesco

    No full text
The French autotranslation of Über den Begriff der Geschichte (Thèses sur le concept d’histoire) – Walter Benjamin’s very last work – contains an incomplete citation with reference to a verse by Dante. The present contribution proposes a new identification for the context of the reference, different from those considered up to now by the critics, regarding Benjamin’s reflections on the appearance and the vanishing of the mental images in Purgatorio XVII. Not only is this passage more appropriate to the context, it is also helps elucidate the very idea of dialektisches Bild, or of Dialektik im Stillstand, central to the thought of Benjamin
