Stereo imaging and X-band radar wave data fusion: An assessment

    No full text
The use of spatial and spatio-temporal data is rapidly changing the paradigm of wind wave observations, which have been traditionally restricted to time series from single-point measurements (e.g. from buoys, wave gauges). Active and passive 2D remote sensors mounted on platforms, ships, airplanes and satellites are now becoming standards in the oceanographic community and industry. Given the covered area ranging from centimeters to kilometers, such sensors are now a valuable tool for ocean and coastal observations. In this paper, we intercompare spatio-temporal wind wave data acquired with two state-of-the-art techniques, namely the stereo wave imaging and the X-band marine radar. The comparison was performed by operating the two instruments on an oceanographic research platform during a crossing-sea condition. We analyzed the statistical properties of the wave field, and its directional and omni-directional energy distributions. From our analysis, we suggest that stereo data can be exploited to find the best radar Modulation Transfer Function and scale factor needed to estimate wave parameters. Moreover, the fusion of the two systems will allow to broaden the scales covered by any one measurement, and to retrieve reliable directional wave spectra from short (∼1 m) to mid-wavelengths (∼100 m)

The Geox: The Shoe that Breathes

    No full text
Geox is the largest shoe company in Italy in terms of sales and number of stores, making it one of the leading shoe brands in the world. In 2015, Geox made 874 million euros in net sales, more than 68% of which was accounted for by foreign sales. The brand is sold in 1161 retail stores, consisting of both directly operated stores and franchise stores, across 101 countries. This case study shows how new technology and continuous innovation can be implemented in a market in which fashion and design typically dominate. Describing and analyzing the company’s marketing activities in recent years, we demonstrate that Geox’s success rests in its ability to innovate, define and maintain a strategic position in the footwear industry. Recognized by consumers for its patented innovation, the “shoe that breathes,” Geox has the largest number of patents in the industry

Rec. a Pierre Courroux, L’Écriture de l’histoire dans les chroniques françaises (XIIe-XVe siècle)

    No full text

Control of silver clustering for broadband Er3+luminescence sensitization in Er and Ag co-implanted silica

    No full text
In this work, the optical properties of Er and Ag co-implanted silica slabs were investigated in order to shed light on the observed improvement of the rare-earth emission properties through a sensitization process activated by Ag implantation. A full ion implantation approach was adopted since it represents an effective way to create a thin doped layer, where luminescent Er ions can interact with Ag-related sensitizing species. The results evidenced that the sensitization process is effectively promoted in presence of Ag ultra-small structures, like few-atom aggregates or multimers, which can be already formed at the early stages of the metal clustering process. On the other hand, the precipitation of large, plasmonic clusters, occurring at high temperature post-Ag implantation annealing, produces a decrease of the fluorescence enhancement effect. Furthermore, it is suggested that the overall sensitization mechanism originates from an Ag-Er energy transfer that determines the possibility of a broadband photostimulation of the rare-earth ions, even by pumping in non-resonant excitation condition. Thanks to these features, the investigated Er and Ag co-implanted system can be considered for the realization of high-performing optical amplifiers in waveguide

ON THE “SPECIFIC INTENT” OF THE CRIME OF GENOCIDE. BEYOND INDIVIDUAL CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY

    No full text
In this article, we will start from the analysis of the specific intent in cases of individual criminal responsibility, comparing the knowledge-based and the purpose-based approaches elaborated by legal doctrine before going beyond this level and addressing State responsibility, which is the prevailing aspect in the commission of the crime of genocide. We will then investigate the complex relationship between the two kinds of responsibility, envisaging three possible scenarios in which State policy comes into play. We will finally only attempt to propose some reflections on the responsibility of collective non-State actors, such as terrorist organizations, for the crime of genocide, in particular where these actors behave as independent de facto entities, capable of manifesting themselves in the international realm
