Directed self-assembly into low-density colloidal liquid crystal phases

    No full text
Alignment of anisometric particles into liquid crystals (LCs) often results from an entropic competition between their rotational and translational degrees of freedom at dense packings. Here we show that by selectively functionalizing the heads of colloidal rods with magnetic nanoparticles this tendency can be broken to direct the particles into novel, low-density LC phases. Under an external magnetic field, the magnetic heads line up in columns whereas the nonmagnetic tails point out randomly in a plane perpendicular to the columns, forming bottle-brush-like objects; laterally, the bottle brushes are entropically stabilized against coalescence. Experiments and simulations show that upon increasing the particle density the system goes from a dilute gas to a dense two-dimensional liquid of bottle brushes with a density well below the zero-field nematic phase. Our findings offer a strategy for self-assembly into three-dimensional open phases that may find applications in switchable photonics, filtration, and light-weight materials

    L'amicizia secondo Aristotele.

    No full text
The objective of this paper is to review and reinterpret, in light of the most recent contributions of the commentators, the two main problems with regard to the Aristotelian conception of friendship: the relation between the three kinds of friendship and the necessary inclusion of friendship as a component of a happy life

5-Membered cyclic ethers via phenonium ion mediated cyclization through carbonate chemistry

    No full text
Cyclization of 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenol via DMC chemistry in acidic conditions is herein discussed for the first time. Reaction conditions have been investigated and optimized. This substrate is quite appealing as it incorporates a 2-hydroxyethyl moiety in ortho to the aromatic hydroxyl group capable of stabilizing the related phenonium ion. When the reaction mechanism was investigated via theoretical calculations, the results suggest that the most favorable pathway encompasses a DMC-mediated formation of the phenonium ion that is converted into the 2-(2-methoxyethyl)phenol. The related cyclic ether is then formed via intramolecular cyclization of this intermediate. This peculiar cyclization reaction is another example of the versatility of DMC herein used as solvent, methoxycarbonylation agent and leaving group in the intramolecular cyclization leading to the phenonium ion

    Sui «Cari barbarofoni» di Il. II 867

    No full text
The adjective βαρβαρόφωνοι occurred for the first time in the Trojan Catalogue (Il. II 867). This term, which is generally interpreted as «of barbarian speech», is only used to describe the Carians contingent, although in the Trojan Catalogue all the allies listed are actually barbarians. Embracing an ethnic perspective, this paper is focused on the meaning of βαρβαρόφωνοι. It is argued that the poet used a Carian self-representation tale but he filtered this account through his Greek perspective. The poet, through his Greek perspective, would have turned the original pride to speak Carian into being βαρβαρόφωνοι

Rising damp in historical buildings: A Venetian perspective

    No full text
Considering several real case studies, moisture distribution due to rising damp in Venetian brick masonries is discussed and empirical models are developed. Moisture content and soluble salt data of 25 historical buildings in Venice are analysed. Data are scrutinized using statistical methods, obtaining contour plots and estimating the validity of linear and non-linear models. The models confirm that masonries are usually soaked with water till 120–150 cm over sea level, while the evaporation zone ranges in height from 200 cm to 350 cm. In the perpendicular section, moisture distribution depends on several contingent factors such as, among them, the proximity and the exposition of the external façades to the water action

Esecuzione forzata e ambito oggettivo di applicazione dell’art. 2038 c.c.
