No full textBuilding design needs to consider that the lifetime of its products will likely face relevant environmental and socio-economic changes, strong- ly related to the limits imposed by the geo-biosphere. Taking action to face such limits beyond trendy, debatable “green-washing” policies can be either a forward-looking choice or rather something imposed by ne- cessity. These have been the premises of the collaboration between hu- manitarian NGO Emergency Onlus and architecture firm TAMassociati in designing hospitals in the African regions of Sahara and Sahel: in fact, several African countries – long living in scarcity – represent an example and an opportunity to learn of some alternative to the mainstream devel- opment model. In this work, some vernacular building techniques are revisited towards a low-tech innovation for energy saving and renewables use that, in a next future, could turn out to be useful also for architecture in the Global North; they are here reviewed under a systemic point of view, and presented with the evaluation of their potential advantages in terms of long-term socio-environmental sustainability. The investigated low-tech innovations able to use local renewables yield net savings one order of magnitude higher than conventional solutions, while granting a strict energy demand such as that of a specialised North-like hospital in a hot dry area. Such results seem therefore as an encouraging example from which to learn also in other contexts with a milder climate, where possi- ble poorer energy drivers (e.g., the sun) would be clearly matched to less extreme conditions
Sul ruolo dell’immaginazione nella metafora dell’infinito in Emmanuel Levinas
No full textThis article focuses on demonstrating how Emmanuel Levinas’s thought can offer a significant contribution to the debate on metaphor. In particular, it attempts to describe the role of imagination in the establishment of the metaphoric sense, based on some texts of Levinas recently published in France. Thereafter, this essay intends to adopt Stéphane Mosès's interpretation in order to demonstrate how, through a comparison with Kantian Imagination, it is possible to formulate the Levinasian statement on ethics — centered on the absolute metaphor of infinity — in terms of aesthetics.
The overall intention of the article is not purely to explain the role of such statement in the evolution of Lévinas’s thinking, but also to identify in that metaphor an effective instrument for the shaping of ethical unrepresentable images

Large-Scale Image Geo-Localization Using Dominant Sets
No full textThis paper presents a new approach for the challenging problem of geo-localization using image matching in a structured database of city-wide reference images with known GPS coordinates. We cast the geo-localization as a clustering problem of local image features. Akin to existing approaches to the problem, our framework builds on low-level features which allow local matching between images. For each local feature in the query image, we find its approximate nearest neighbors in the reference set. Next, we cluster the features from reference images using Dominant Set clustering, which affords several advantages over existing approaches. First, it permits variable number of nodes in the cluster, which we use to dynamically select the number of nearest neighbors for each query feature based on its discrimination value. Second, this approach is several orders of magnitude faster than existing approaches. Thus, we obtain multiple clusters (different local maximizers) and obtain a robust final solution to the problem using multiple weak solutions through constrained Dominant Set clustering on global image features, where we enforce the constraint that the query image must be included in the cluster. This second level of clustering also bypasses heuristic approaches to voting and selecting the reference image that matches to the query. We evaluate the proposed framework on an existing dataset of 102k street view images as well as a new larger dataset of 300k images, and show that it outperforms the state-of-the-art by 20 and 7 percent, respectively, on the two datasets

No full textAttention is being focused on the meaning and function of the evidential utterances introduced by the Spanish conjunctions así que and que (Rodríguez Ramalle 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014a, 2014b, 2015). Two assumptions are made. First, that the evidential purpose is not epistemic. Second, that the evidential choice seems to be a signal of information concerning the participants in the interaction because belonging to their informative territory. Hence, the presumption of relevance and emotional involvement. The language samples are drawn from the Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual (CREA)
