    Terahertz-driven phonon upconversion in SrTiO 3

    Direct manipulation of the atomic lattice using intense long-wavelength laser pulses has become a viable approach to create new states of matter in complex materials. Conventionally, a high-frequency vibrational mode is driven resonantly by a mid-infrared laser pulse and the lattice structure is modified through indirect coupling of this infrared-active phonon to other, lower-frequency lattice modulations. Here, we drive the lowest-frequency optical phonon in the prototypical transition metal oxide SrTiO 3 well into the anharmonic regime with an intense terahertz field. We show that it is possible to transfer energy to higher-frequency phonon modes through nonlinear coupling. Our observations are carried out by directly mapping the lattice response to the coherent drive field with femtosecond X-ray pulses, enabling direct visualization of the atomic displacements

    L’autore, evidenziate le ragioni economiche, organizzative e giuridiche dell’espansione delle (re)internalizzazioni nella PA, prende in considerazione le principali discipline che regolano il fenomeno. Innanzitutto, egli dimostra come l’art. 19, comma 8, d.lgs. n. 175/2016 limiti il riassorbimento del personale delle società pubbliche, a garanzia della regola costituzionale del concorso per il pubblico impiego, ma impedisca la prosecuzione automatica di tutti i rapporti di lavoro quando la reinternalizzazione configuri anche un trasferimento d’azienda. In secondo luogo, l’autore sostiene che il legislatore ordinario potrebbe regolare il fenomeno attraverso una disciplina maggiormente rispettosa dei diritti dei lavoratori, pur senza violare l’art. 97, comma 4, Cost. Infine, argomenta la tesi secondo cui una disciplina più equilibrata rispetto ai contrastanti valori in gioco sia, in certa misura, dovuta alla luce del diritto UE

    A Study of the Effect of Kosmotropic and Chaotropic Ions on the Release Characteristics of Lignin Microcapsules under Stimuli-Responsive Conditions

    Stimuli-responsive behavior of lignin microcapsules (LMCs) has been investigated along with the detailed characterization of their stability profiles. The disassembly of LMCs was found to be salt species-dependent, indicating the specific relevance of inherent kosmotropic and chaotropic characteristics. For the first time, a connection between the Hofmeister series and the stability profile of lignin microscale materials is established. LMCs showed excellent stability in water and under high temperature and pressure (autoclaving conditions). Active release is efficiently triggered by pH changes and balancing chaotropic and kosmotropic effects via salinity tuning

    Ownership and workforce composition: a counterfactual analysis of foreign multinationals and Italian uni‐national firms

    This article investigates how the ownership of firms (affiliates of foreign multina- tional firms, or uni-national firms) affects their internal workforce composition. We consider this issue empirically by adopting a novel database on the workforce com- position of companies operating in the manufacturing industry in north-east Italy. The workforce composition (in terms of skill level, gender and the less investigated characteristics of age and nationality) of affiliates of foreign multinational enter- prises (FMNs) are compared with a counterfactual of uni-national firms, constructed using propensity score matching. Consistent with previous studies, the results report that FMNs recruit a larger number of highly-skilled workers. Our main findings show that FMNs employ a lower number of foreign and less experienced (young) workers. The employment of native and more experienced workers in FMNs seems to suggest that foreign companies use domestic ‘inherited’ stock of manufactur- ing knowledge and skills. By using this stock, they contribute to sustaining its development

    The atmospheric water cycle of a coastal lagoon: An isotope study of the interactions between water vapor, precipitation and surface waters

    The interaction between the different components of the water cycle at ecosystem scale is of great interest in hydroecology. Stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in the water molecule can be used to study these processes quantitatively due to their different physical properties. This study aims at quantifying the contribution of local moisture sources to the isotopic signature of water vapor in the specific estuary system of a coastal lagoon. Here we present a framework of the isotopic composition of the atmospheric water cycle components (water vapor and precipitation) for the coastal lagoon of Venice (Italy) and we discuss the interaction between the atmospheric component and the surface component of the local water cycle, i.e. the atmospheric moisture and the lagoon water. The Venetian Lagoon is an enclosed basin with low freshwater influx, resulting in the presence of large horizontal gradients of the isotopic composition of surface water. This feature allows to determine the sensitivity of the isotopic signal in near surface atmospheric moisture under a range of humidity conditions. We observed that when the lower atmosphere is close to water vapor saturation pressure condition, the isotopic composition of water vapor at the ground appears to be in isotopic equilibrium with lagoon surface water in a range of approximately 6–26 km from the sampling point. On the other hand, under unsaturated conditions, we estimated that lagoon evaporation flux accounts on average for ∼27% to the daily (06–18 Local Sidereal Time) total evapotranspiration surface flux. This is the first study that discusses the spatio-temporal variability of water vapor, precipitation and surface water isotopic composition for a coastal lagoon, thus including the major components of the local water cycle in an estuarine system with the isotope approach

    Diketopyrrolopyrrole Bis-Phosphonate Conjugate: A New Fluorescent Probe for In Vitro Bone Imaging

    The synthesis of a conjugate molecule between an unusual red-fluorescent diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) unit and a bis-phosphonate (BP) precursor by a click-chemistry strategy to target bone tissue and monitor the interaction is reported. After thorough investigation, conjugation through a triazole unit between a γ-azido rather than a β-azido BP and an alkyne-functionalized DPP fluorophore group turned out to be the winning strategy. Visualization of the DPP-BP conjugate on osteoclasts and specific antiresorption activity were successfully demonstrated

    Economic Impacts of Climate Change on Vegetative Agriculture Markets in Israel

    We integrate the combined agricultural production effects of forecasted changes in CO2, temperature and precipitation into a multi-regional, country-wide partial equilibrium positive mathematical programming model. By conducting a meta-analysis of 2103 experimental observations from 259 agronomic studies we estimate production functions relating yields to CO2 concentration and temperature for 55 crops. We apply the model to simulate climate change in Israel based on 15 agricultural production regions. Downscaled projections for CO2 concentration, temperature and precipitation were derived from three general circulation models and four representative concentration pathways, showing temperature increase and precipitation decline throughout most of the county during the future periods 2041–2060 and 2061–2080. Given the constrained regional freshwater and non-freshwater quotas, farmers will adapt by partial abandonment of agriculture lands, increasing focus on crops grown in controlled environments at the expense of open-field and rain-fed crops. Both agricultural production and prices decline, leading to reduced agricultural revenues; nevertheless, production costs reduce at a larger extent such that farming profits increase. As total consumer surplus also augments, overall social welfare rises. We find that this outcome is reversed if the positive fertilization effects of increased CO2 concentrations are overlooked
