Fast Determination of Extra-Virgin Olive ol Acidity by Voltammetry and Partial Least Squares Regression
Abstract
In this paper, an approach for the detection of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) free-acidity, based on combination of voltammetric profiles (Voltammetry) and Partial Least Squares (PLS) multivariate regression, is described. Voltammetric measurements are performed with a 12.5 µm radius platinum microdisk, directly in the oil samples mixed with 0.5 M of the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) tri-hexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, which acted as a supporting electrolyte, and allows achieving a suitable conductivity in the matrices. Multivariate regression is performed directly on full voltammetric responses recorded over a properly chosen negative potential range and scan rate, where essentially all free fatty acids, characterizing EVOOs, can be reproducibly reduced. PLS regression models are built by employing Italian EVOO samples training sets at different acidity levels (over the range 0.2 % w/w - 1.5 % w/w; (% w/w) represents mass percentage) and optimized by choosing the optimal complexity, in terms of number of latent variables (LVs). The free-acidity prediction is made through a multivariate model, constructed by using standards of known acidity (determined by the official volumetric titration method) and validated on an external sample set. To show the validity of the proposed method, the PLS/Voltammetry predictions of the free-acidity of a series of commercially available Italian EVOOs, ranging from 0.2 to 0.41 %w/w, are obtained and the values compared with those determined by the official titration approach. Tra azione e linguaggio: i processi di apprendimento linguistico wittgensteiniani alla luce degli studi evoluzionistici di Tomasello sull’intenzionalità collettiva
This article focuses on the critical comparison between some of Wittgenstein’s intuitions on language acquisition and Tomasello’s theory of the human joint attentional processes in early childhood. Firstly, this essay will explore the problematic nature of the relations between pre-verbal behavior and linguistic games, which Wittgenstein analyses in the late phase of his philosophical study. The second part of this essay will shift attention onto Tomasello’s assumptions about the pre-modern Homo and his social-cognitive abilities, in the attempt to reveal their dependence on the interaction with the surrounding environment. Overall, this essay sets itself to achieve a double goal: on the one hand, that of illustrating how some aspects of Wittgenstein’s philosophical theory converge with Tomasello’s elaboration of the early human cooperative communication processes; on the other, that of showing the potential contribution of Tomasello’s work to the development of Wittgenstein’s insights on the process of language acquisition
Arsenate and arsenite removal from contaminated water by iron oxides nanoparticles formed inside a bacterial exopolysaccharide
In the last decades, the presence of high As levels in groundwaters poses a serious limitation to the use of this
resources for drinking purposes in several parts of the world. Treatment of As-rich waters selected iron oxides
filters as more effective, low cost and selective technology. Green and biologically-driven pathways to synthetize
new nanostructured iron oxy-hydroxides are becoming always more attractive. We tested the suitability of
FeOOH nanoparticles (9–15 nm) produced by Klebsiella oxytoca strain DSM 29614 and encapsulated in EPS gel
structure to treat arsenic rich water. Different gel:water volume ratios were tested to treat 5000 μg As/L solution.
20% FeEPS solution was able to remove 95% of As(V) while in 5% solution removal was reduced to 60%. Arsenic
adsorption was very fast and follows pseudo-2nd order kinetic with maximum adsorption capacity reached at
about 30 min. Adsorption followed Langmuir model for As(V) with qmax=31.8 mgAs/gFe and BET for As(III)
with 8 mgAs/gFe for the first layer in 10% FeEPS solution. FeEPS dried into powder showed noticeable removal
only after 2 h, hence not suitable for drinking water treatment. Treatment of natural As levels in mimicked
groundwaters showed 87–95% As(V) and 45–61% As(III) removal after 5 min. FeEPS gel immobilized onto
bivalve shell debris was used in packed-bed filters. It retained 49.8 mgAs/gFe from 150 μg/L As(V) spiked
groundwater before reaching breakthrough at 8000 BVs. Biologically produced FeEPS gel showed good potentialities
as eco-friendly material to remove As from contaminated groundwater
Sull'interpretazione di un testamento epistolare
La Corte di Cassazione, con la sentenza n. 26791/2016 in commento, decide sulla impugnazione di un
testamento così detto epistolare, e si riporta, da un lato, al valore ermeneutico che assumono gli
elementi estranei alla scheda testamentaria, e, dall'altro lato, al principio di conservazione del
testamento. La pronuncia, pertanto, consente di richiamare la differenza di giudizio fra la qualificazione delle disposizioni come testamentarie e l’interpretazione del testamento, nonché di indagarne
la differente portata rispetto ai principî richiamati dai giudici di legittimità, alla luce della particolare
vestizione delle ultime volontà, che sono contenute in una missiva
